Apparently, Mr. Hostess is pissed at the election results and don't want to pay his workers much more than minimum wage so he's gonna punish all the kids out there who are still in their Twinkie stage of life...

Where is Captain Cupcake when he is needed?

One marketing slogan that was used was "You get a big delight in every bite." In the early 90's, a commercial featuring a shark aired. The commercial begins with a shark swimming through the ocean until something near the surface catches his attention. He thinks a Hostess CupCake is at the surface. As he swims closer, the CupCake turns out to be a woman sitting in a inner tube. The shark bumps the lady into the air, then says, "Hey! Where's the cream filling?" as the woman falls into the ocean.

What an ad team! No wonder this cupcake had such a great appeal!

Hostess Cupcakes, Snowballs and Twinkies--the Unholy Three junk foods of
our youth, gone! Even worse, Wonder Bread, pure white, full of air, and empty of nutrients, which has become the central metaphor for American Culture, will be gone as well!

Why does this good news seem so much like bad news?

Bobert, being Bobert, didn't post a link, so here's the sad story:
WSJ Article

Incidentally, no one blames it on the re-election of Obama. Even the Fox News site(which I didn't post) didn't. The company had been in reconstructive bankruptcy, and had been negotiating wage cuts under the supervision of a Federal Judge. The teamsters union signed a contract, but the baker's union decided that it was all just a big act and called their bluff by calling a strike. Only thing was...they weren't bluffing.

The reason they were in bankruptcy in the first place is that most of their products were junk foods, and a lot of people have come around to Kendall's point of view.

Pretty much lost in the mostly glib posts is that 18,000 workers are going to lose jobs soon, if not already. The Baker's Union, about a third of Hostess workers, would rather they--and all the rest of their co-workers--have no job, rather than work with the company to keep it going.

OK, OK, I *gotta* tell this Twinkie vignette.

Here's the setup.

So, on NPR (of course), when Hostess was in the initial stages of going under, they reported on a 50-year (yes, that is five-Oh)old Twinkie that had been discovered during someone's residential move. And the resident had eaten it and said that it was as fresh as the day it was born.

Step two. In the weeks prior, there had been a report about a civil suit involving Mountain Dew, and a mouse having been found in it. The MD executive at the trial insisted that "it couldn't have happened, because the MD would have dissolved the mouse." to the sound of HUGE guffaws! (Actually, it would have turned the mouse into a gelatinous state.)

Step three. (Do you see where this is going?) OK, so on "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" one of the news items they were talking about was the Hostess thing. And one of the panel asked (oooh, this is GOOD!), he asked, "So if you put a Twinkie in Mountain Dew, would it dissolve?"

Oh no, he di-en't! Oh yes, he DID! SNAP!!

I'm not sure how long it would take any carbonated drink to dissolve a mouse.... but back when soda came in returnable bottles, and customers brought them back to the store, where they were sent to the bottlers to be washed & refilled....

*I*... me.... myself... was at the returns counter one day (1956) when a customer brought in a 6-pack of Pepsi with a 12 oz. Pepsi bottle...unopened... with a mouse in the bottom! (automatic washers didn't remove large objects) We gave her a new one and, I suppose, sent the evidence back to Pepsi. I shoulda kept it and watched.

Make the iconic cakes at home with a copy-cat version that's just as sweet

TODAY recipes updated 11/16/2012 9:11:05 AM ET

Friday, Hostess brands announced it would shut down the company after a strike crippled its operations.

Though the fate of its products — from Ho Hos to Ding-Dongs to Wonder Bread — is uncertain, you can calm your Twinkie panic with this home-spun recipe. Todd Wilbur has been cloning some of America's favorite name-brand foods for more than 20 years and here, he recreates the iconic yellow cakes.

Recipe: Twinkies

Todd Wilbur

Ingredients

        Non-stick spray
        4 egg whites
One 16-ounce box golden pound cake mix
        2/3 cup water
        Filling
        2 teaspoons very hot water
        1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups marshmallow creme (one 7-ounce jar)
        1/2 cup shortening
        1/3 cup powdered sugar
        1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Preparation

You will need a spice bottle, approximately the size of a Twinkie, ten 12 x 14 -inch pieces of aluminum foil, a cake decorator or pastry bag, and a chopstick.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

Fold each piece of aluminum foil in half twice. Wrap the folded foil around the spice bottle to create a mold. Leave the top of the mold open for pouring in the batter. Make 10 of these molds and arrange them on a cookie sheet or in a shallow pan. Grease the inside of each mold with a light coating of non-stick spray.

Disregard the directions on the box of cake mix. Instead, beat the egg whites until stiff. In a separate bowl combine cake mix with water and beat until thoroughly blended (about 2 minutes). Fold egg whites into the cake batter and slowly combine until completely mixed.
Pour the batter into the molds, filling each one about 3/4 of an inch. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until the cake is golden brown and a toothpick stuck in the center comes out clean.

For the filling, combine salt with the hot water in a small bowl and stir until salt is dissolved. Let this mixture cool.

Combine the marshmallow creme, shortening, powdered sugar and vanilla in a medium bowl and mix well with an electric mixer on high speed until fluffy.

Add the salt solution to the filling mixture and combine.

When the cakes are done and cooled, use a skewer or chopstick to make three holes in the bottom of each one. Move the stick around inside of each cake to create space for the filling.

Using a cake decorator or pastry bag, inject each cake with filling through all three holes.

Serving Size

Serves 10

I don't think this bankruptcy rises to the threshold of a Federal bail-out. So where does that leave us?

How about Bain Capital purchasing the submerged assets of the company, with a leveraged buy-out, selling off what it can to Karjackistan Investments, and pocketing the change?

On many issues, I am as big a bleeding heart as Bobert, but in situations like this one, I stand with John on the Sunset Coast and PDQ.

Even though they made lot of really junk food, and a made some bad business decisions, this company supported a lot of people, and not just the 18,000, don't forget the thousands of retired and pensioners. The Baker's Union demands strangled this business at a point when it was in dire trouble, but was still trying to keep going--

The company was in chapter 11 for from 2004 t0 2009, then filed again this last January-it got so bad that, as required by law, notice that a massive layoff could occur were sent out in May. Anybody with any sense knew that the applecart could tip over at any minute.

Kendall is right, about the "bonuses", but only sort of: the CEO, a man named Driscoll, resigned in March. He was given a million dollar plus compensation package, and at the same time, the other top execs were given 80% raises--however, the Teamsters objected, and the execs salaries were cut by the Chief Restructuring officer to $1 a year. (Driscoll probably won't receive much of anything, because now there is nothing to pay him with.) So in the closing days, rather than carrying off huge bonuses, these guys are working for air.

All those junk foods won't go away, they are tangible assets that will be sold off(the funds are estimated, in WSJ anyway, to barely offset the costs of breaking up the old company) and they will be made and sold by companies that don't have to carry huge pension/benefits legacy packages that unions negotiated in a more generous economy.

Bye to Twinkies and Workers Rights? Hostess Blames Striking Workers As it Liquidates, Romney-Style

Company had already planned to close plants even if the workers accepted the cuts and stayed at work.

November 16, 2012 |

Is it bye bye for Twinkies, or will they just no longer be union made?

Get your Twinkies and your Wonder Bread now, because what you see in stores is the last of them. (At least until the brands are sold at auction and revived.) Hostess Brands has announced that it will liquidate, blaming a strike by workers in one of its unions as they rejected a contract that called for them to make major concessions on wages and benefits. The workers had taken concessions to help the company survive a previous bankruptcy, and this time around when the call for cuts came, members of the Teamsters narrowly accepted them while members of the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers, and Grain Millers union overwhelmingly said no and went on strike. According to the company , it's all the workers' fault:

"We deeply regret the necessity of today's decision, but we do not have the financial resources to weather an extended nationwide strike," said CEO Gregory Rayburn in a statement.

Of course, Hostess management had already claimed that the strike would be responsible for the closings of specific plants—when it had already planned to close plants even if the workers accepted the cuts and stayed at work. BCTGM President Frank Hurt says the workers understood who they were dealing with:

Our members know that the plans all along of the Wall Street investors currently in control of this company did not include the operation of Hostess Brands any longer than it takes to sell the company in whole—or in part—in a way that will maximize the profits of these vulture capitalists regardless of the impact on the workforce.

Workers were being asked to accept cuts, but top executives had gotten massive raises as Hostess was about to enter bankruptcy. Investments in the company's future that had been promised as part of restructuring after the previous bankruptcy were never made. And as for the management, put in place by the private equity companies that now own Hostess, Hurt says:

Unfortunately however, for the past eight years management of the company has been in the hands of Wall Street incestors,"restructuring experts", third-tier managers from other non-baking food companies and currently a "liquidation specialist". Six CEO's in eight years, none of whom with any bread and cake baking industry experience, was the prescription for failure.

This is a Mitt Romney-style deal. Throughout the campaign, we read about Romney's past deals that went very much like what's happening to Hostess. Now we're watching it in real time—and seeing how when workers fight back, they're targeted for blame.

Saputo says it doesn't intend to make of sell twinkies (Hooray!).
Weston companies probably will continue to make and sell Wonderbread.

Wonderbread was a favorite with kids in my hometown. Bits of fresh Wonderbread were rolled easily into spitballs. With a 'soda' straw (large and small diameters) and a supply of spitballs, we would pelt the unwary. We would find seats in a back row and loose our missiles at those in front. The Saturday kids matinee at the movies was a favorite shooting gallery (until we were detected and thrown out).
