2012 Camp New Harmony - SF Folk Music Club

17 Nov 12 - 04:27 PM (#3437925)
Subject: Camp New Harmony Workshops
From: Joe Offer

Up-to-date camp schedules now online.

See bottom of thread, or use these links for download:

Registration was supposed to have closed Dec 1 for Camp New Harmony - the San Francisco Folk Music Club's New Years Camp - but it was held open for stragglers until December 13. Registration is now officially closed. Registration for next year's camp will open September 1. You procrastinators, make up your mind now to get next year's registration in early.

Dates for camp are Thursday, December 27 2012 to Tuesday, January 1 2013

I'm going to use this as an edited thread to record pre-camp signups for workshops. We expect, as usual, that most people will sign up for workshops after they get to camp.

So, the idea is this: if you're attending camp and you'd like to lead a workshop, post a message at the end of this thread with the following information:
  • Your name
  • Name of the workshop
  • Preferred time
  • Preferred location

I'll enter the information in the charts below. I can't guarantee time and location, but I'll do the best I can to balance things.

-Joe-

Note: as time has gone on and spaces have filled up, I've had to move some workshops two or three times. If that's a problem, let me know. But hey, please don't yell at me. I'm a sensitive guy, and I'm doing the best that I can.

Note: Lots of openings in the not-unreasonably-early morning hours
-Joe-

Off-the-charts note: Jim Oakden says Thursday night's dance will be a Contra Dance.

2012-2013 SFFMC
Membership and Camp New Harmony Registration forms

Download Camp Registration .pdf form

Download Camp Information .pdf form

SFFMC Membership form (print page)

If not already a member, make out two separate checks to SFFMC, one for membership and one for camp, but both checks and forms can be mailed to the Camp Harmony Registrar in one envelope.

REGISTRATION PRIORITY

Two days of Camp New Harmony sold out last year, and we anticipate similar attendance this year. We will continue to use priority criteria for registration.

First priority (Bargain price): Current members of SFFMC as of September 1 provided their applications to Camp New Harmony are postmarked by October 15, 2012. These will be processed in the order received.

Second priority (Regular price): members joining / rejoining after September 1 whose applications to Camp New Harmony are postmarked by November 16, 2012. Their applications will be held until after all first priority applications have been processed. If space is still available, these will be processed in the order received.

Third priority (Late registration): All current members, regardless of the date they joined / rejoined the Club, whose applications to Camp New Harmony are postmarked between November 17 and December 1, 2012. If space still remains, these will be processed in the order received.

Important! Print out and carefully read the Camp Information sheets, as our wonderful new site has new policies, including pre-assigned housing that cannot be changed during Camp.

If you can't print the pdf files call the Camp co-registrar, Amelia Hogan at 831-331- 3705 (before 9pm). Leave your phone and mailing address on the answering machine, and she will mail a form to you.

Please spread the word: we no longer have drop-in attendance at Camp.

The Camp Information form should be read by anyone planning on attending Camp Harmony.

Joe;

We're planning to lead a Parody Workshop again this year. Every time we've done it in the past, we've never gotten around the circle even once so we promised to do it for two hours this year. Our preferred time is 2:00 to 4:00 on Saturday afternoon (3:00 to 5:00 works, too)and our preferred location is the Carpeted Room. I think we sent this info to Amelia but, if you're in charge of scheduling workshops, here it is again.

Hi Joe,

I can do a Ballads workshop but haven't received my registration confirmation, although I sent it in by the early deadline. We like to have two hours for Ballads since they are long. Looking at the above schedule I would say I would prefer to have them on Saturday from 4:00 to 6:00 in the carpeted room (That appears to be the most accessible venue to me: Ruben's house is out and we have lost the Mural Box).

See you soon!
Done. You may want to consider the Front Room (formerly Registration) or the Mirrored Room - both are handicapped-accessible. Cabin 6 is also accessible, but I don't think it's wonderful for unaccompanied singing. These venues are a little removed from the center of camp, but they're right on the bus route. -Joe-

P.S. Registration confirmations haven't been sent yet, but I'm sure you won't be rejected.

I'd like to do a song swap called "Songs about Love, Sex, or Both" on Friday 1:00 in Ruben's House.

And another called "$$$ Songs -- Poverty, Wealth, Gold & Silver" on Friday 3:00 in the Carpeted Room.

Also, I notice you haven't yet posted Ray Bierl's workshops, and he gave no times, but I'd really like to attend his "Fun with Phrasing" workshop, so if it's possible not to schedule him at the same time as my workshops, I'd appreciate it.

Everything's handled up to here. Since I'm decision-challenged, I procrastinated for three days before Marlene kicked me hard enough to get Ray's workshops scheduled.

That's why I ask people to specify time, location, workshop name, and leader name - so  I  don't have to make decisions...

I would like to teach some tunes, perhaps in the hour before the Irish Session on Sunday and Monday. Tunes I will be teaching are: The Tolka (polka), Sliabh na mban (hornpipe), and if there's time, a couple more polkas: The Taur and Jim O'Keefe's.

I will teach the tunes by ear, and I will have sheet music for people to take home if they like.
Got it, Sharon. As we discussed on Facebook, the workshop will be called "Learn By Ear." -Joe-

So, I heard from Robert Rodriques today. He and Amelia Hogan are leading two workshops:

Songs, Stories, History: The Eternal Triangle

- a 2-hour workshop in the carpeted room, Friday, 11 AM-2 PM

This workshop is open to everyone, but is aimed at teachers interested in making history interesting to their students through songs and stories.

The Forbidden Zone: Songs and Stories from the Dark Side

- Ruben's House, Monday, 4-5 PM. [ADULTS ONLY] - including songs about cannibalism, incest, body dismemberment, superviolent crime, and the like.

Anybody else want to post details of their workshops?

Here's an e-mail I received. Movie night tonight. I'll take care of these on Monday.

    Joe,

I tried to sign up on the mudcat site to teach a couple of workshops at Camp Harmony, but I don't think I was successful, so I'm sending you my request via emaiI:

I'd like to teach beg./int. swing dancing on Sun. at 1 pm in the dance hall, and improvisational theater at 1 pm on Monday in the Carpeted Room. Please tell me if that will work. Thanks!

I notice that on Friday, the acappella song swaps seem to be lining up mostly in the carpeted room. Can you move my Friday 1:00 song swap from Rueben's to the carpeted room? The 1:00 slot is vacant as I'm viewing it right now. Thanks.

The camp committee arrived here at camp last night, and all is well. Sure is cold here - so come prepared. It was about 30 degrees last night, and the heater in my cabin wasn't working (fixed now). Good thing I had an electric blanket. By the way, Wifi service is much better than it was last year, so you can stay connected. Still not very good cel phone service, though.
See you here!

We're having printer problems at camp and haven't been able to print enough copies of the schedules. Since many people have been using the schedule posted at Mudcat, I thought I'd post daily updates during camp. I hope this works. This started as a Google doc, transferred to Excel, and now it's back to Google Docs so I can use my Chromebook. Wish me luck.

Can anybody suggest easy ways to print the schedules I've posted above? I want one day's schedule to fit on a single piece of paper. I had no luck with Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Safari. I did a pretty good job with Firefox, which has a "shrink" function on its print menu, but only on printing full pages. The "printer friendly" option on Mudcat messages includes a header that I don't need.

The Firefox solution is the best so far. Any other ideas?

The camp went very well this year, by the way.
