Twinkie references in song... Slate has assembled them. And Hostess Cupcakes and Wonder Bread, for good measure.

Requiems for a Twinkie: Pop's Greatest Shout-Outs to Hostess Snacks

[all the examples have YouTube links -- I'm not going to transcribe 'em all... if you're interested, go to Slate, linked above.]
The news that Hostess is going out of business has been met with sadness from nearly everyone who's enjoyed a sugar-filled, individually-wrapped cupcake or the spongy cream-filled goodness of a Twinkie. In honor of the brand, which has been around since 1930, Brow Beat takes a look at the pop songs that have given shout-outs to our favorite Hostess snacks.

Twinkies especially are a favorite among rappers (the word is slang for 20-inch rims), along with Wonder bread (bread = money, of course, and Wonder often = Stevie). But hip-hop artist are hardly the only lyricists to name-drop the confections: James Taylor and Regina Spektor are also big fans. Some of our favorite Hostess allusions are below.

Ding Dongs & Twinkies

Larry Groce, "Junk Food Junkie"
"I'm afraid someday they'll find me / Just stretched out on my bed / With a handful of Pringles potato chips / And a Ding Dong by my head"
"Where nobody else can see / I open that door so slowly / Take a peek up north and south / Then I pull out a Hostess Twinkie / And I pop it in my mouth"

Twinkies

Juelz Santana, "Cashing Out"
"But she a bad bitch, like Nicki / Keep two of those like Twinkies"

Damian Marley, "And Be Loved"
"Well it's no co-inky-dinky / Oh so much young gal come to lick me / Jenday ragamuffin feel a pound a stinky / Even one good spliff off a the sweet life Twinkie"
50 Cent, "Fat Bitch"
"Them Twinkies got your ass gettin' fat fat"
The Pharcyde, "Somethin' That Means Somethin'"
"Time is just a faze and/ Life is just a riddle like / If you build a Twinkie there's / A man in the middle with a / Chick on the side that's along / For the fun so I see / Her as a stallion and I / Ride everyone"

The Notorious B.I.G., "The What"
"[They] know they soft like a Twinkie filling / Playing the villain, prepare for this rap killing"
LL Cool J, "Cheesy Rat Blues"
"That Twinkie looks good / So mister don't tempt me"

Jay Z feat. Big Boi, Killer Mike & Twista, "Poppin' Tags"
"What would you do if you was in my shoes? / Leave dudes in the rearview / V-12 engine, corners spinnin / Twinkies shinin', pinky ring"

Trick Daddy ft. Big Boi & Cee-Lo, "In Da Wind"
"Drop the top and let the sunshine in / With the wood grain, let the Twinkies spin"

The Clipse, "Hello New World"
"Hello new world, here we come / On them Twinkie trains / With the hood screaming, 'We're on our way'"

No Doubt, "A Little Something Refreshing"
"Pies, chips, candy apples / Twinkies, frosted flakes / Donuts, french fries ..."

John Fogerty, "Nobody's Here Anymore"
"He got the latest software / He got the latest hardware too / He got the latest gizmo / Up in his room / He's feeling so connected / But he don't talk to a soul / He got a stash of Twinkies / Up in his room"

Dead Kennedys, "I Fought the Law"
"Twinkies are the best friend I ever had"

Wonder Bread

The Tubes, "Wonderbread Bodies"
"Wonder Bread / Wonder Bread bodies / Wonder Bread bodies / Got a Playboy brain"

Tyga, "Get Silly Freestyle"
"Bread like wonder / Make her wonder why they flourish"
Fabolous,"Dope Bitch"
"You know I'm getting bread / No wonder you walked up looking wonderful"

Punjabi MC featuring Jay-Z, "Beware of the Boys Remix"
"All I do is get bread, / Yeah I take Wonder"
De La Soul, "Supa Emcees"
"Emcees be kneading / Needing dough while I make bread like Wonder"

Nas, "America"
"With a face like he wonder where I got my bread"

Regina Spektor, "Samson"
"Samson went back to bed / Not much hair left on his head / Ate a slice of wonder bread / And went right back to bed"

James Taylor, "Chili Dog"
"Make my bed out of Wonder Bread / Spread some mustard upon my head / I don't want no onions or sauerkraut, Mamma / Hold on to the bun baby, work it on out."

Hostess cupcakes

Big Daddy Kane, "Looks Like a Job For…"
"Cause I take the cake like Hostess / No, not the one you wanna play high post with"

The Donnas, "Skintight"
"I saw you standin' by the Slurpee machine / White studded belt and skintight jeans / I tried to buy a hostess cupcake / baby you're so sweet I got a toothache"

E-40, "Spittin'"
"I ain't no cupcake (I ain't no cupcake) / So don't call me hostess (hostess)"

Any to add? Any on the current news of the brand's demise?

I seem to remember Twinkies in a song sung by the Red Clay Ramblers. First time I'd heard of them. Back in the '80s.   True-Love explained them to me.
I'll go check the record cover.
Cheers, Joy

The Cheap Suit Serenaders sing a song called Get A Load Of This with a mention of Twinkies:

My girl came over but I sent her away
'Cause she almost knocked my dinner off the TV tray
Get a load o' RC Cola, TV Dinner, Plate of Twinkies
And it takes a pink burrito
For to keep me clean (For to keep me clean)

TV Dinner is a meal that I'm lovin'
Take off the foil, thirty minutes in the oven,
Get a load o' RC Cola, TV Dinner, Plate of Twinkies
And it takes a pink burrito
For to keep me clean (For to keep me clean)

My gal's sweet she ain't like no other
Lets me spend all day in front of that 24 inch colour
Get's me a load o' RC Cola, TV Dinner, Plate of Twinkies
And it takes a pink burrito
For to keep me clean (For to keep me clean)

Only one thing that makes me jump up and holler
TV breaks down during Bowling For Dollars
Get a load o' RC Cola, TV Dinner, Plate of Twinkies
And it takes a pink burrito
For to keep me clean (For to keep me clean)

This is their take-off on an old string band song. I've heard Shesham & Lotus do the original song, but I can't recall the title.

You beat me to it by 5 minutes Stewie. I shouldn't have taken the time to type the whole thing out. We do this tune in The Maple Leaf Champions Jug Band .

Oh no!
I left out the verse that goes:
Don't like no carrots, Can't stand no peas
But a pack of Ding Dongs brings me down to my knees

Charley, I'm not sure I've ever tasted a Twinky.

Someone at the local music store was saying they may have been a bit premature, seeing as how some states are considering legalizing marijuana.

He was eating Twinkies, as he drove along the highway
Listening to Merle Haggard and his band
He didn't see the semi, as he came around the corner
And he died with his Ding Dong in his hand!

Oh yes he died with his Ding Dong in his hand
He scattered cream filled cupcakes 'cross the land
One of life's great big no-no's,
He was reaching for his Ho-Ho's
And he died with his Ding Dong in his hand

He was a country singer, who was eatin' Zingers
As he sang with a red-hot country band
The band was really smokin', 'til the singer started chokin'
And he died with his Ding Dong in his hand!

Yes he died with his Ding Dong in his hand
That last song he sang was really grand
He thought he was the mostest, 'til he bit that big fat Hostess
And he died with his Ding Dong in his hand!

Yes, he died with his Ding-Dong in his hand
He scattered cream-filled cupcakes 'cross the land
Well, I hope and I pray that when I reach that fateful day,
I will die with a great big humongous Ding-Dong… or a severely large Suzy-Q… maybe some of them powdered doughnuts that they leave out on the shelf at the local stop & rob for about three years… in my hand (Stavro Arrgolus)

That was me that posted the "Ding Dong Song". I think it's also on a CD by the Clusterpluckers. I/ve got it somewhere, but can't find it at the moment.

Dad used to ask, "If you are what you eat, why aren't I tall and thin like a Twinkie?" I might add, the line was taken to a whole new level by a gay friend of mine.

Never having encountered the product in question I thought that the title was one of the euphamisms that kids use for their more intimate body parts.

Are there more songs about desserts like;

Who puts the shish
on your kabob
or relish on
your hot dog
Who puts a pinch of salt
on your egg
or some sauce
on your gonzofazoul

The Randy man can
the randy man can
and has a secret rhthym
that you can't understand
but the randy man knows

Who shaves so close his cheeks glow
it feels like peachy fuzz
What the randy man does
with a can of whipped cream
few have ever known

Who finishs the ice cream
but leaves a little bit for you
spills chocolate syrup
on the waxed kichen floor
but cleans it all up
The randy man knows
all the perfect ways
to cure all your woes
The randy man knows

Who can ice a baked cake...

The song 'Strange' by Galaxie 500 mentions Twinkies. I am British and don't know what a Twinkie is.
