20 Nov 12 - 05:36 AM (#3439100) Subject: Ruth Notman at Edinburgh Folk Club From: Johnny J Wednesday 28th November 2012 One of English Folk music's greatest young hopes from a couple of years back(There have been so many of them but Ruth is a VERY good singer indeed) returns to performing after a self enforced break in which she embarked on studies for a "real job". The lure of the music proved too much for her but we are delighted she's back on the road and coming to visit our little club. "Ruth Notman is a young singer and songwriter from Nottingham. She started out on the live circuit at just 13 years old, performing at folk clubs and venues in and around Nottingham and Derby and soon began securing slots at leading Festivals. Ruth was a finalist in the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Awards 2007. Shortly afterwards she signed a record deal with Mrs Casey Records. She spent the next year writing songs, gigging around the country at festivals and folk clubs , as well as recording her debut album, Threads - an album which saw her collaborating with the likes of Hannah Edmonds, Saul Rose (Waterson:Carthy, Whapweasel) Roger Wilson (Wood:Wilson:Carthy), and Bella Hardy. Threads was released in November 2007 and created quite a stir, receiving great reviews including 4 Star reviews in The Guardian and Mojo Magazine. Her second album 'The Life of Lily' appeared in October 2009, featuring a blend of traditional material, self-penned songs and well chosen covers. Ruth was one of eight artists in the 'All Along The Wall' project in 2009/2010, inspired by life around Hadrian's Wall, both ancient and modern." Her "Life of Lily" album is an absolute classic and one of my personal favourites from the last few years. Thanks for all your support. Personally, I would like to wish Ruth well in whatever she chooses to do. I still regard her two studio albums to be excellent. They have been very well received in many quarters and, until now, I have not read any previous adverse reports on her live appearances. I feel very sorry that the duo were unable, for whatever reason, to fully maximise on the opportunity offered to them on their first outing in Edinburgh but we should all move on.... |

If anything she did well and held her own, considering the dud notes were coming from Saul's melodion. Also, I found the review for this gig to be remarkably harsh, a tad racist or at least anti English. I worry too about the quality of this cynical sarcastic reviewer's reviews. Does he actually like folk music? See his review of Liza Carthy and Norma Waterson! This was a great concert but he actually commented on Norma Waterson's disability! Even the other members of the Adams family would not consider such a topic relevant in musical content. |

I was unaware of this controversy. there are a lot of loose ends to tie up when you embark on a career as a performer, and if you're not from a family with a long tradition of performing its a fearsome learning curve - and you're never completely flameproof whatever you do. keep going Ruth -sooner or later all the pieces will fall into place. you certainly have the talent to achieve great things. |

Arguably, Saul and herself had a bit of an "off night" in Edinburgh but they are not the first or last artists to experience such issues. I'm sure they were well aware of any flaws and will have learned lessons for the future. However, I still enjoyed the gig and felt that the detractors were being quite unfair and overly harsh. As I said, her albums show she has great promise and I wish her well for the future. I'm sure she will have put all this behind her now and we should all move on too. His reviews cover a wide range of artists and genres.He may be wrong, depending on one's own view, many a time but that's another matter. Jack can be very outspoken sometimes but he's entitled to his point of view too. However, I'd like to state that EFC committee of which I'm no longer a member will take several aspects into consideration before booking an act. Certainly, they will not rely soley on You Tube videos which can not infrequently do an artist little justice. At the time, Ruth had released two albums which had been very well received and was regarded to be a highly promising young performer on the English folk scene. Again, I wish Ruth well in the future. |
