From my grandmothers time 'Godspeed' and 'Pick-a-Back' (and rearing horses on the mantlepiece) Can't remember what the picture on every wall in the 60's was, but there was always 3 plaster ducks. |

They counted 60,000 images last time I looked, but I didn't find Millais in their index. It's more likely that the Tate gift shop might have, or be willing to make, a print(?) if they're the ones who have the original; although I don't know anything about their setup. There are numerous print dealers (even Walmart again now?) but it can be hard to find one who has a specific work in stock. Since this appears to be a fairly popular one, a local dealer might be able to find one a little cheaper than the "museum quality" ones the museums generally have available. John |

They are in constant violation of copyright law. I see they have renewed their theft and will notify Willard's heirs of his presence on their site. |

In the past they've said "any image they have in the collection," which they now count as 75,000 to choose from, but still unfortunately not including any of Millais' works. Some time back they indicated that all their prints were "Giclee process" and included emulation of the artists' actual brush strokes. I don't see that claim in current info, although they do say that all materials are "archival." Proceeds from sales also go to support of the collection and to artists via scholarships and otherwise. When I search at ARC I find some 87 works of John Everett Millais, including the subject of this column, most if not all apparently available as prints. I got as far as 'enter card details' without hitting any barriers, but didn't take the final step. I can't believe I have caught John out, it gnaws at the very foundations of my creed, that if JiK speaks a matter is settled ;-) My link in post #14 goes right to an order form, it appears to be their work id#700 and currently in the Tate Gallery collection, as previously discussed. |

Maybe their index is just a little out of date (like the search index here(?)). I didn't try a site search (Google or otherwise) for new items. When I last spent much time at the site, you could right-click and "save picture" for any of them. They've recently restricted most of the "big images" to members only, even for viewing; but I wasn't feeling sufficiently needy when I found that change to try to find what it takes to be a member. For some time, they've blocked saving/copying images for living artists who've requested it. They have added (according to their count) about 22,000 images since the last time I went through all of what they had and quit checking for updates. (I did, back then, systematically look at about 48,000 of their images - it took about 3 years part time.) Before the rules changed, I "collected" samples from about 2900 artists - about 9,000 images; but I was "specializing" on researching a particular kind/style of works with no prior knowledge of what artists did the kind I was looking for. One of their most interesting features is in their pages on winners of their latest competitions. Some very nice work being done; but it's been a couple of years since I've taken a serious look even there. John |

Millais was a founder-member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, along with Rossetti and Holman Hunt; and one of the most distinguished of Victorian painters. His 'Bubbles', a marvellous study of a child's first realisation of the concept of death and ephemerality, The Blind Girl, Ophelia, Christ in the House of His Parents, Isabella and the Pot of Basil, et al, are among the highest points of British C19 art. It has never made any pretense at being "all artists" in any general way. The site came up with around 20,000 images and they did a pretty good job of keeping the index up to date until they reached something around 40,000 images. An original purpose was to provide exposure of classical "realist" artists (with a fairly loose definition of the genre), with particular interest in some more recent ones that seldom get particularly "good press" with the museums. The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, in particular, is recognized, but is sort of a "fringe group" relative to the ones of primary interest at the site. They posted lists of "new acquisitions" that were fairly accurate until about the same time, when it became harder (for me at least) to tell when a "new" image was really new, or when it just replaced an existing one with a "better" one of the same work. There were some updates to the "index of artists at ARC" but that index was provided as a "convenience" for visitors and served little in the way of an essential purpose for the serious students. Their original target was 60,000 images, possibly based on storage space on the original equipment setup, and when they reached that point the posting of newly acquired images, and indexing what was there, sort of took a back seat to other activities in support of art and artists, although current statistics indicate that they've continued to expand their collection steadily. For a site that does make an effort to cover "all artists of significance" among the best I've found is ArtCyclopedia that is specifically meant to be an index of (all?) "Fine Art" on the Internet, but only tells you where to find pictures and has none of its own posted. Even there, I find "artists of interest" (to me) that are not in the ArtCyclopedia index, but that may be because we disagree - a little - on what's "fine art" (?), and/or because I don't follow "the trade" closely enough to make popularity judgements. Many of the artists that have seemed to be most popular with 'catters have NOT BEEN LISTED there, possibly because they are living artists who haven't established sufficient reputations with the John |
