You can't *make* yourself like a particular artist or genre, just as you can't *make* yourself find a particular comedian funny. Most of Dodd's jokes and routines are considerably older than some things people revere as 'traditional', but that's about the only relevance to Mudcat that I can see ... |

We were treated to ghastly jokes, racism, dancing kids dressed as 'Diddy Men', an entertainer-cum-vocalist, mawkish songs, and (best of all) a Parade of Vintage Comedians with aforementioned 'Diddy Men' wearing grotesque oversized papiermache heads that were supposed to resemble Arthur Askey, Max Miller, Max Wall, Jimmy Clitheroe, Tommy Trinder et al - but if we hadn't been told there'd have been no guessing. I really wish I'd had my camera for that bit, but the rest of it was absolute lowest-common possible denominator common-minded crap. After 30-minutes even the ironic novelty wore off; after 40 minutes my mother-in-law turned to me and said: 'Sean - you stopped laughing ten minutes ago.' After 1 hour I'd lost the will to live; after 2, I regained my will to live in fear that DVT was setting in. After 3 my wife and I ran home in a state of gibbering hysterics entirely unable to face THE SECOND HALF which (according to my more stoic in-laws) went on for another FOUR HOURS. On the bright side, if hell there is, I do not longer fear it - an eternity of torment will be nothing compared to three hours of Ken Dodd and his fecking 'Happiness' show... It's right what they say though - you never remember a single gag afterwards. Actually, I remember one about someone catching a glass eye, but I rather wish I didn't... It was my idea too, we even bought the tickets as part of my in-laws Xmas present - and here I am on Boxing Day that year posing beside the poster actually looking forward to it: Lamb to the Slaughter : Fleetwood Marine Hall, Boxing Day 2008 |

Get him on stage at 7.30pm and he is still there at midnight. Oh, and so long as your funny bone has not been removed, you will be loving every minute of it. He is perhaps one of the last of those who did their apprenticeship in the music hall tradition. He was a good singer in his day too. Not many still on stage who did the Empire & Esseldo circuits... That alone makes him of interest to those who value heritage, or folk as it is sometimes called... |

From: GUEST,sturgeon In his excellent book 'Tickling the English' the Irish comic Dara Ó Briain describes how his enjoyment of his UK tour was somewhat diminished by his discovery, at various venues, that Ken Dodd had been on stage for four or five hours in the days before Dara appeared to do his own gig (which was two hours maximum). In the end he bites the bullet and goes to see Dodd perform, expecting Ken to meet all the standard, old-fashioned criteria of British comedy (racism, sexism, intolerance, preying on the disadvantaged, etc.). Much to his own disbelief, he finds himself staying the course of the whole Dodd five-hour experience, goes back to his digs crippled with laughter and fully aware that Dodd not only has no interest in belittling others, but is, as he's always been, a comic genius. |

It was pretty grim stuff - threadbare 60s throwback light entertainment. But otherwise, a good clean family show. I'm sure people equate this with talent, but we found it witless in the extreme. |
