While he may not be a "middle aged folkie's "cup of tea" , Bieber sold 15 million albums before his 18th birthday. On YouTube, his song "Baby ft. Ludacris has 805,804,019 hits", so someone is watching, globally (while it has 3,220,235 dislikes, IMO, a small # compared to the total number of views).

Canadian singer-song writer, Gordon Lightfoot sold 10 million records in his career since the 60's.

I am not saying Bieber is better than Lightfoot. But, the success for this young fellow is not too shabby.

I suspect Canadian Shania Twain's album sales, most likely tripled (or greater) Bieber's.

The reason Bieber's YouTube vid has so many hits is because it's being viewed by 12 year old girls and they watch it over and over and over and over and over...

I was talking to Jim last week, Spaw. Jim Carrey, that is, not James Kirk. (I haven't been in touch with Shatner since late last August.)

Anyway, Jim Carrey said he's been a bit letdown lately by your low performance output too. "He peaked back around 1992, and it's been downhill ever since," were his exact words.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. There's downright mean and then there's cruel and unusual. And don't you even consider sending Shatner back. Even friendship has limits.

I just looked at 20 seconds of one of JB's Youtube videos. He has received 87 MILLION hits on it. Jaysus, who knew?

Shania had a paltry 33 million on 'From This Moment', which is imo a good song.

I'd blame Stephen Harper, Bruce, he's bringing Canada into line with the rest of the planet, so he probably ordered The Bieber Boy to be promoted by his Merry Band of Canadian 'Dumb 'Em ALL Down' Corporate Bastards..

It doesn't end there! We also have Joni Mitchell, Ian & Sylvia Tyson, Leonard Cohen, most of the members of The Band, the Guess Who, Gordon Lightfoot, Buffy Sainte-Marie (who was born in Alberta but has dual American-Canadian citizenship), Paul Anka (shudder!), Celine Dionne, Shania Twain, Rush, Alanis Morrisette, and many more...

See this list:

http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best_artists-canadian.html

Further to that, we have Lynn Miles, an Ottawa area folksinger who is not all that famous, but I think she's the finest songwriter (and one of the very finest singers) in Canada...or anywhere. Look her up on Youtube and see. Lynn was Alanis' vocal coach, by the way, when Alanis was a teenager.

The Canadian Music industry has long been very good at giving America what it wants.

From Guy Lombardo, Paul Anka, The Guess Who, Rush, BTO, Alanis Morrisette, Shania, Celene, Sarah, Byan Adams, BNL, Buble and others mentioned here and even more not mentioned, there is usually a Canadian or three near the top of the US charts. As a Canadian I have never felt any specific obligation to prefer them, like them or even listen to them.

As an ambassador of Canada and Canadian music, Canada could do worse than a clean cut kid who can sing, write and dance. You don't have to like Beiber, you don't have to crap on him either.

I could name many more but a teen heart-throb from the past that set the girls screaming was Bobby Curtola. My wife and I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with him years later in Las Vegas. I found him to be friendly and gratious and he sang Fortune Teller for my wife on our annivesary. On his break he joined us at our table and it is a treasured memory!

In my mind there's a wierd connection between Gordon Lightfoot and Justin Bieber—neither of them is Aboriginal. When I first heard Lightfoot's name (circa 1965) I, like many others, assumed that with a name like that he had to be First Nations. Turns out no, of course. I first heard of Justin on the Gian Ghomesshi show a few years back when Elvira Kurt was talking him up as a lesbian cult hero, a status he enjoyed because he looked so darn tomboy cute. Only I heard his name wrong and I thought, "Justin Beaver, eh? That's so cool, an Indian kid from Ontario hitting the big time."

Alanis definitely did a good job in that role in that movie.

The way Kevin Smith sees, God, she was damned near perfect.

If he makes a sequel, admit it, Justin Beiber would be equally as good for exactly the same reason. Or Sarah Mclaughlin in her day, or Joni Mitchell in hers. There is a calm confident dignity with which Canadian super celebrities comport themselves which make them suitable for that part.

Let's call the role "Laid Back God."

BTW Morgan Freeman has it too.

Rockabilly Ronniw Hawkins, who became a Canadian in 1964, was "the mam' who brought drummer Levon to Canada with his band the Hawkes, which later "morphed" into the Band. This paved the road for the likes of Canadian "blue-eyed soul" singer Burton Cummings. Few bands could hold their own with the Beatles, in their peak, like "the Guess Who" did.

True, HK, Canadians are not significant in the roots of black-gospel soul music. But, lets not forget the influence of producer, composer, singer, songwriter, and arranger David Foster, on some of the most successful musical artists in the world, including Bryan Adams, Christina Aguilera, Air Supply, All-4-One, Andrea Bocelli, Boz Scaggs, Toni Braxton, Michael Bublé, Mariah Carey, Charice, Cher, Chicago, Destiny's Child, Neil Diamond, Céline Dion, Earth Wind and Fire, Gloria Estefan, Jackie Evancho, Josh Groban, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, Chaka Khan, Beyoncé Knowles, Kenny Loggins, Madonna, Nsync, Prince,Kenny Rogers, Seal, Barbra Streisand, Donna Summer, Tamia, The Tubes and Shania Twain.

There is easy-accessible music for everyone's taste. Some like gravely-harsh whisky, while others prefer the smooth and glitsy-complex kind. Many like it all.

There are music differences based on countries or origin, stimulated by differences in cultural and social make-up. But, I suspect most folk see music and musicians as being international in nature, with all contributing to its richness. Those boundries are getting less and less complex (I suspect there is a mix of benefits and losses from that). Big music, that once was the only player in town before the internet and new technology, is complex - even for the seasoned artist.

I do not believe the carpenters were Canadian.

What I find interesting is the music hotspots in Canada, (especially in Cape breton and Newfoundland, (that have Celtic-Irish traditional music roots).

What I also find encouraging is the broad influence that a few people have had on music - such as some of the names I brought up (Hawkins, Foster, Lanois).

Canada is a wonderful country, Henry. The only thing I don't like about it is...it's a bit too far north...too long a winter. We've always had more than our fair share of great musicians here, and I expect that will continue. There's something about the vastness of this land and the relatively small population in a huge expanse of land that brings out the poet in people, I think. So many of our finest musicians have come from the small towns and rural areas, but they all end up going to the big city in order to have a successful career.

I remember the Canada of my youth. Boy, how I loved it! It's changed radically since then, seems at times to have lost its sense of identity with the huge influx of immigrants from all over the world coming in, but all in all, it's still a great place.

You are going from strength to strength. The Montreal metropolitan area has a population of close to 3.8 million people from damned near every country in the world. The major centres such as Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver are like international melting pots now, and you can find every kind of ethnic influence in their music. That has had a big effect on the whole country through the mass media.

Toronto used to be a "white English culture" city, but not any more. When I was a kid, Toronto seemed like a bastion of English and Scottish culture with a good deal of Irish influence there as well. There were plenty of other ethnic neighborhoods downtown, of course...the Portuguese, the Chinese, the Italians, the Greeks, etc...but the city overall seemed like an Anglo-Saxon society. It's not at all like that now. As a matter of fact, I think caucasians are now outnumbered by other races in the city of Toronto. There's been a diaspora of middle class whites out of Toronto to the smaller outlying cities and country towns to the north, the east and the west of Toronto. This has caused cities like Barrie, Newmarket, and Orillia to grow very rapidly in the past few decades, and in those cities you find the predominantly white-English culture that you used to find in Toronto when I was a child.

Now, as Ed says, the East Coast culture hasn't changed all that much, aside from the collapse of the Fishery.

I agree, Henry, that the multi-ethnic contributions add a lot to the vitality of music. On the other hand, it's kind of neat when you have a long established musical culture with its own set of traditions such as the maritime music of the East Coast in Canada and Maine. Either situation can produce some excellent music.

I like Lower Town in Ottawa just the way it is: about as ethnically mixed up as you can get in a neighbourhood 10 blocks square. We have Orthodox Jews strolling to shul through a housing development full of Somali families, and it doesn't get much more diverse than that.

But Hawk is right about traffic: it's nuts, especially since City Council is trying to do something about our century-old sewer system. Bus transit just doesn't fit into a major construction site on an arterial road.

Hawk, Ottawa's diversity has almost nothing to do with diplomats. This town has three, count 'em, three universities and a very large community college -- much more important for attracting a multinational population. The federal government's hiring practices tend to favour certain minorities, also, although Public Service workplace culture still has -- as they say -- a ways to go.

Most important of all, Ottawa is largely recession-proof, so there are lots of jobs in the service sector, especially retail. Go to any department store around here, and you will find that the majority of sales staff on the floor are new Canadians or first-generation Canucks. Lots and lots of young women in hijabs work at Wal-Mart and Loblaws.

Ottawa is, indeed, a fine place, though I must admit it's frickin' cold and wet right about now. But, to return to the original topic, let us not forget that Canada has something of a track record in cranking out teen sensations. Remember Paul Anka?

The New Yorker ran a fascinating article about the Bieber business last summer. It conveyed a strong impression of a hard-working young man with heavy responsibilities, who loves his mother and does his best in a difficult business. He came across as genuinely nice and very talented, if immature. That last characteristic seemed mostly an effect of having been so thoroughly commodified at such a young age.

What a snort!

After mentioning above that Rob Baker, guitarist with the Tragically Hip. is my nephew (son of my older sister, Mary), yesterday my younger sister, Pat, called, and told me that she just got a call from Rob. He was in town! The Tragically Hip is in Seattle to do a gig, and while he's here he wanted to get together with us all.

So yesterday, Pat and Barbara picked him up at the hotel, and the four of us spent the day together. I hadn't seen Rob in about twelve years and he looks the same. Tall, slim, good-looking guy with beard and mustache and very long hair (CLICKY). I'd forgotten how deep his voice is. Low baritone or bass, maybe.

And I'd forgotten what a really bright, intelligent person he is!

We sat around in our living room and talked about all kinds of things, mostly music. The Hip has performed for audiences as large as 150,000 people. I, on the other hand, did most of my singing in coffee houses and house concerts, with some fairly big concerts (largest crowd I sang for was 6,000, at one of the Seattle Center Hootenannies in 1963). Rob commented that when singing for huge audiences, there is this great, anonymous sea of faces, and you just go out on stage and do it. But he felt that it was much more intimidating to sing for smaller audiences, such as a house concert.

Also, in addition to working with the Hip, Rob's got a few individual projects going. We talked a lot about home recording studios, equipment, mics, software and such. I picked up a lot of excellent information!

Great conversation!

Later, the four of us adjourned to the dining room and scarfed down a couple of pizzas we'd sent out for, then about five p.m. or so, Pat and Barbara drove him to the gig site to get ready for the performance.

Most enjoyable get-together!

I've run into a few people who were doing the "big star, prima donna" sort of thing, oftentimes when they were not all that well-known, or, for that matter, talented. But Rob comes on like a regular guy who's just very happy to be able to do what he loves to do and be free to keep doing it.

I think his quote at the top of the "Kickass Canadians" interview that I linked to above (here it is again) pretty well says it:

"Getting to make a living out of your own creativity. . . .   You can't really ask for much more than that."

Amen to that!!

And he doesn't just confine himself to music. We did talk a bit of politics and we pretty well see eye-to-eye. I think, as a private citizen, he's been quietly active in a number of good causes.

Thanks, Don. Interesting article.

I put together a CD years ago of "fun tunes" and sent it to a bunch of Mudcatters. It contained a variety of music genres and one tune was the studio of the Hip tune I linked to above, "NO Is Sinking". I also included other Canucks, such as Bruce Cockburn, Kim Mitchell interspersed with stuff like King Crimson's "Elephant Talk" to a CARA fiddle tune featuring Mudcatter David Oakley... Oaks (see carsmusic.com - them Irish lads are GOOD!). I got comments. I felt compelled to say that The Hip are like U2 on steroids. Seemed appropriately "Canuck". When you quoted "Kickass Canadians", it reminded me of that.

30 years... and still "all for one and one for all"! That's hip in my books!

Thanks for sharing, Don.

"Did you teach him any guitar? Do you jam with him?"

Fair question from Henry, so I'll answer it.

Well, Rob was born in Kingston, Ontario, and that's where he lives now, with wife and kids. I live in Seattle. My sister, Mary (Rob's mother) told me once in a phone conversation (probably called at Christmas or some such) that Robbie, teenager at the time, was teaching himself to play the guitar.

Actually, Rob and I have seen each other only twice, due to the fact that we live on practically opposite sides of the continent. The first time we met was when Rob came to Seattle with the Hip to do a concert about ten or twelve years ago, and since his time was limited, we spent about an hour getting acquainted. This time, we were able to spend more time together, a few more hours before he had to hit the stage.

We've never had a chance to sit down with a couple of hot guitars and jam. It would be interesting to see what might come out. Our styles are quite different and sometimes some interesting stuff can emerge.

I'd love to give it a whack!

I don't go out of my way looking for Bieber's music, but he has a good voice and seems to have a legitimate talent. Growing up in the media glare is difficult - that'll be the real trick.

Henry Krinkle - "If you got any mojo up there, you got it second hand from us.
Like the whole British Blues thing. What do Brits know about the blues? It's silly.
=(:-( )) "

I've never heard you play Henry. Think you could have taught John Mayall, Alex Korner, Peter Greene, Rick Fines, Jeff Healy, Ken Whiteley, Dave Mowatt, Jim Bowskill, Jackie Washington, Mose Scarlett, Carlos delJunco... how to play the blues?
