28 Nov 12 - 10:43 AM (#3443691) Subject: RE: My new blog From: GUEST,CS Charming Leveller! When walking the Peddars way (old Roman track, straight as a die, bisecting the county of Norfolk from South to North) we encountered erected stones (modern) with poetry on. The last of which may be seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/trojanllama/2536992154/ Walking an ancient track really can be quite a profound experience, to think of the footfalls long gone.. I also find old decommissioned railway tracks have a potency to them too. |

28 Nov 12 - 11:06 AM (#3443708) Subject: RE: My new blog From: theleveller Thanks folks. CS, I've walked part of the Peddar's Way although it was some time ago. H V Morton has a nice chapter on it in 'In Search of England' - not sure which one it is as I haven't got my copy handy but it begins 'The silence of death lies on the Peddar's Way'. |
28 Nov 12 - 11:49 AM (#3443731) Subject: RE: My new blog From: rumanci the combination of writing because of and about walking in the countryside has always held a deep appeal to me - I'm looking forward to reading more particularly as your walking areas are new to me photographically. Thank you for sharing. |

06 Dec 12 - 11:33 AM (#3448072) Subject: RE: My new blog From: GUEST,999 I have always loved writings about the interconnections of the world we inhabit and ourselves. You speak of it so well. No affectation; just honest views from someone who's learned how to look and transcribe those thoughts and feelings to paper. Your poetry is beautiful. Bruce |

06 Dec 12 - 06:18 PM (#3448285) Subject: RE: My new blog From: GUEST,Jack Sprocket Bloody briars- still got the stigmata from a fortnight ago. Laxton is a place I've never been to, though I know it from the misrepresentation in half-a-dozen archaeology textbooks that insist it's in Northamptonshire. The contrast with the physical and social devastation of the deep-mining districts a few miles north and west is astounding, though, if Google Maps is at all credible. Good start. |

09 Dec 12 - 02:52 PM (#3449834) Subject: RE: My new blog From: GUEST,Jack Sprocket Now then my levelling friend: I would have left a comment on your blog, a gentle caveat about scansion, but it demanded that I type the two words in the box- in which only one word was displayed. Anyway- good thought, but make it read a bit more smoothly. |
09 Dec 12 - 03:26 PM (#3449841) Subject: RE: My new blog From: theleveller Thanks for the comments Jack. Smooth, in this instance, wasn't what I wanted to achieve. I'll certainly bear your suggestion in mind, though. |

15 Dec 12 - 06:50 AM (#3452210) Subject: RE: My new blog From: theleveller Writing poetry can be a curious business; sometimes poems have to be struggled over for days, week or months whilst, at other times, they arrive unannounced. I met this poem on a late afternoon walk near my village of Wressle, as I was gazing at the sun setting behind an unassuming copse of trees. There's a poignant backstory about this particular stand of trees: it was on this spot that, during WW ll, a Royal Canadian Air Force bomber, limping back from a night raid, failed to make the last few miles to safety at (I think) Wombleton and crashed, killing all the crew. Hidden away amongst the trees is a simple memorial to these men, erected by the owners of the land, Elizabeth and Colin Shutt. The Company of Trees |

18 Jan 13 - 10:16 AM (#3468077) Subject: RE: My new blog From: GUEST,Mad Jock Here is the lyrics from Angie Wright who has the blog at abernthycourtyard.blogspot.com Angie only gets to sing this song once or twice a year and it still holds true even though "it was translated using failed O level Latin" about 10 or more years ago,as she says when she introduces it. Gaudete gaudete Christus est natus ex Maria virgine gaudete (x2) Good news I bring so have no fear A king is born to defend us God knows how I'll cope this year The shopping is horrendous. Gaudete... Kings and shepherds at the door worshipping on bended knee Shoppers fight upon the floor for that final frozen turkey. Gaudete... In joy and peace we'll be well met with time for heartfelt giving Christmas on the internet has made my life worth living. Gaudete... Come Christian folk throughout the land and make your praising vocal Then drink as long as you can stand much longer at the local. Gaudete... Hope some others will enjoy it as much as I did. |
