Judy Knight - House Collapse

28 Nov 12 - 08:46 AM (#3443613)
Subject: Judy Knight - House Collapse
From: nutty

Just watched Look North (BBC lunchtime news) to see Judy being interviewed about the collapse of Alflaeda Terrace at Whitby. Her house which stands high above whitby harbour is part of a terrace in imminent danger of collapse - to such an extent that all the houses are likely to be demolished tomorrow

Judy stated that she had only managed to get a limited amount of possessions out of the house.- so I hope that she has at least managed to save her guitar.

It's a really sad state of affairs. I have stayed with Jude many times and have fond memories of the place. I'm devasted for her.

O dear, yes this has made BBC and Yorkshire Tv local news and of course, many of us have stayed with her (or next door) during Whitby ff week and had barbecues etc

the news has travelled fast and we all hope that she will be ok

She has been there some 26yrs and the houses were built 150 years ago

Demolition will mean rehousing

O hell

My apologies for placing this here and no offence meant, but it may help people checking news sources. The spelling is as follows.

Aelfleda Terrace, Whitby

I hope your friend is able to relocate soon. Sounds like she has many friends over there.

I've just found the latest reporting in the
Whitby Gazette - and as if being homeless and possessionless wasn't bad enough, one of Judie's 2 cats is missing too. I hope at least that Boudica is found safe!

I too was devastated to see the news item. Jude's most likely to be sans-computer and unable to read this, and will have more than enough to worry about, but I do hope she can be re-housed PDQ and wish her all the best.

Thanks for the correction 999. I should have checked the spelling before I posted.

Judy has lots of friends on the folk scene and is particularly well known for organising numerous folk event over the years based on the Station (formerlyTap and Spile) hostelry in Whitby.

I do hope she gets to read these messages and that she lets us know if we can help in any way.

Demolishing Thursday it seems, guitar safe, dunno bout cat poor thing

Insurance looks to be ok and Jude will be looking for rented property at least initally!

Possessions a problem as building unsafe

Featured on local North evening news again (above based on my understanding of these reports!)

Tim Binns seems to own the property at the bottom of the cliff which suffered some land slippage [Wath Morris Man]

5 properties to go and from back, brick by brick, seems water was routed under the properties from the Abbey a bone of contention!!

Raymondo, as this issue has been the subject of protracted legal arguments between various parties I would suggest making uneducated assumptions based on hearsay is not the thing to do at present. It could, at worse, be detrimental to Jude and her legal team.

Oh! Crap! I saw this on the national news and thought I recognised the back of Jude's place. Poor lass. I hope she can get in and get at least some of her personal belongings out and check that Boudicca hasn't gone home before the place is torn down.

Now where will the cable car go to??? (All folk week Station Inn singers will understand this).

Hi Everyone - it's me - alive & kicking!
I've now done 4 TV interviews but would have liked a more pleasant way of achieving my 15 minutes of fame!
Hanging out in Staithes now with Fil - down side to this is there's no mobile phone signal down here so sorry for not replying to all the lovely text messages that I've had from everyone.
Insurance people have been great (really) & are moving extremely quickly which is good news.
6 Aelfleda reduces to rubble tomorrow morning & I MAY be able to get a few things out from the back of the house (they're going to knock a hole in the wall) or, I might not. Still - most instruments are saved along with some old photos, pictures, CDs & the like - you know, the most importanht things in life!
Thanks all
Jude

Ah, good that you are with friends, and that you still have your mobile, even without coverage in Staithes. Hope you are able to get a few more of your things out tomorrow.

Anything we can do to help? I propose to stay away unless I hear differently, as there will doubtless be an excess of ghoulish interest, but if you want some company just sing out.

If you do get to go back in, even briefly, a few photos of any stuff you have to leave may help with the insurance. I am sure all your friends here will help out with storing anything you do recover.

All the best, PaulS

This is slightly off topic, but not really. Cats I've seen in emergencies do not react 'normally'. They get scared and flee, anywhere. They need about 24 hours to re-orient themselves. Possibly it's gone to a neighbours or back to its usually place in the building. Put out food for it--(not sardines) its usual food--and call for it now and then. Cats aren't very bright, but they aren't stupid, either.

Cats usually hide in inaccessible places without going far (during a fire, all five of ours piled into the space between the washing machine and the wall, and they stayed there for two days). Not a great idea if the house is going to be bulldozed. Let's hope the demolition goes slowly enough for Boudicca to get out.

Demolition now will be probably starting Friday afternoon, after they've laid a metal roadway to get a cherry-picker in:

"Accessibility is absolutely diabolical. There'll be a man going up in a man-riding basket with a bucket and a hammer and basically he'll be knocking it down brick-by-brick. It's going to be a long, laborious task."

Good luck, Jude. x

Could somebody please grab that cat! I'm glad she's still hanging around. Good to hear the demo men recovered some of your stuff. Best of luck with your move into new digs.

Our local cat rescue organization lends out cat traps - we had to use one once. There's probably some similar group near Whitby that has one available.

They can't harm the cat but she will let you know what she thinks of the indignity.

Oh Jude
I've just heard about this. I'm shocked. How awful!
A couple of weeks ago I had my computer burnt out with a power cut & power surge and lost all my songs, music arrangements, photos & other documents etc. They are now trying to "recover" as much as they can. So I was feeling a bit sorry for myself.
However, all my thoughts are now with you. I'm so glad you're not hurt and that you've managed to salvage so many treasured possessions.
Every best wish for getting back to normal as soon as you can.
Lots of hugs.

Jude, Christine and I are doing the boxing day dip to raise funds for the Runswick Bay Rescue Boat an independent inshore lifeboat, i.e. No money from the RNLI or Government. If anyone would like to sponsor our foray into the frankly bloody cold North Sea on Boxing Day we would be most grateful.

This, as I'm sure you all know is typical of Jude, her whole world is upside down and she still thinks about other people. She's not a bad lass is she.

I saw this item online from ITV Tyne Tees which indicates yet more misery for the landslip victims.
Can anyone shed any more light on this.

Residents whose clifftop homes were demolished after a landslip in Whitby could face huge bills because of uncertainty over their insurance cover.

Five cottages were bulldozed last December on the orders of Scarborough Council.

Now the authority is thought to have billed the owners at least forty thousand pounds each for the work.

But insurers say policies don't usually cover demolition costs.

Extract from above clip:

Yesterday morning, a meeting was held between the owners of the properties on Aelfleda Terrace which were demolished before Christmas following the first major landslip, the cottage owners in Primitive Chapel Yard and representatives from SBC.

On the agenda was a discussion of works that had been undertaken and who would be liable for paying for it – with some of the costs expected to fall upon individual residents.

Whoops meant Mary Ellen Carter ~~~~

"For we couldn't leave her there, you see, to crumble into scale.

She'd saved our lives so many times, living through the gale

And the laughing, drunken rats who left her to a sorry grave

They won't be laughing in another day. . .

And you, to whom adversity has dealt the final blow

With ******* censored ******* to you everywhere you go

Turn to, and put out all your strength of arm and heart and brain

And like the Mary Ellen Carter, rise again."

Sentiments understandable I think

Sorry, that "guest" was me, I'm away from home and I didn't notice I wasn't logged in properly.

Back to the subject - let's hope everyone else's insurance companies are just as enlightened. After all, I'm sure there's a clause in all house insurances that takes demolition into account, after a fire for example. I expect they are being too narrow in the interpretation of their policies and have loads of exceptions.

Glad part of Jude's problems are being sorted. As far as insurance goes, it may depend on the insurance company although the precedent set by Saga(?) may help.

A couple in Cornwall were recently caught in a similar trap when the cob wall of their house collapsed. The insurance company (the "Pru"), said that it had been caused by frost damage and "Home insurance policies generally do not provide cover for damage caused by property age or maintenance-related issues." Here's a link to the story. Link
Thankfully one set of neighbours are letting the 88-year olds stay with them and another is funding the £30k bill for repairs while they challenge the Pru's decision.

Still, a company has to make a profit: how can they do that if they pay out for claims??!!!!

I am so pleased that the insurance company didn't try and make Jude pay. My mates had their place demolished and rebuilt after a fire and the insurance paid for it all.

Time for everyone to check the small print on their insurance policies, I suspect not common to have total rebuild but clearly a possibility and need for all to check what is not covered!

A worrying time even if you are convinced that you are covered

My Fathering law many years ago had a discussion with insurers about his building insurance I am not sure if it is still true but the house is insured on market price for the area. He successfully argued that he already owned the land, external landscaping and services where all existing, that their premium was grossly over priced to demolish and build a new house was approx half of the market price they eventually agreed with him. It is fair to say that he did not put it to the test, This was also at a time when insurers where bothered about their customers as well. Not helpful but interesting and true
