the loss of polar ice is bad news for everyone... but the first to suffer are the native peoples who are literally losing their homes & villages to winter storms because the protective ice is gone...

the loss of ice also endangers the polar bears that go out on the ice to hunt seals...

and it just goes on....

Oh, and I forgot to post this clip from the article above:

"Some scientists who have long doubted that a human influence could be clearly discerned in the Arctic's changing climate now agree that the trend is hard to ascribe to anything else.

"We used to argue that a lot of the variability up to the late 1990s was induced by changes in the winds, natural changes not obviously related to global warming," said John Michael Wallace, a scientist at the University of Washington. "But changes in the last few years make you have to question that. I'm much more open to the idea that we might have passed a point where it's becoming essentially irreversible.""

Thank you, "Mr. Science"...

I have mentioned in the past my late father-in-law who only had a BS in "horticulture" from a small mid-western college and ended up as the foremost expert on oil spills as a lobbyist for API (American Petroleum Institute) and testified to Congress after the Exxon Valdez oil spill to don't-worry-be-happy because "nature would take care of it"???

It might (or not) be worth noting that the linked article from NYT was first published in 2007. Rather a long time back in the debates about human influence on global temperatures, but quite relevant as showing that early concerns have changed little over a time span that is approaching significance in separating fossil fuel emmission influences from "normal weather fluctuations."

Unfortunately it looks very similar to the articles relating to the same climate dynamics being published right now, although for arctic regions the most recent concerns have been somewhat more over melting in large parts of the permafrost areas.

Similar to kendall's note, armadillas recently not seen north of the Texas border are now thriving in Nebraska and have been reported even farther north. Perhaps of more concern to some, a number of nasty insects have made similar northward migrations within the last decade or so, killing large forest areas. Loss of the carbon sequestering capabilities of the forests is accompanied by decay of the dead wood and release of additional greenhouse gases.

It's very much a dynamic problem, and one can only guess which processes will run away fastest. We're apparently not winning in any of the races, even just in the ones we've figured out we're signed up in.

Kendall... "I don't put much stock in what some scientist who is in the pocket of the oil and coal companies says, when I look out my window and see Cardinals, Buzzard and Possum, that all the evidence I need. 20n years ago we would never see these critters."

Wise words. Those who don't observe such things may not know the importance of doing so.

A half dozen years ago or so, I saw a male crow stay here all winter with his lame mate. Couldn't migrate with the other thousands and thousands of crows. I have many pics and videos of them, some of them bring tears to my eyes when I witness the love and attention. I fed them every day. They came when I whistled that it was time to get the grub before the seagulls came in.

Now, I see many staying all winter and I have paid closer attention so I am now aware of many others that never wintered here. It's obvious, if you have watched it all over the past years and, as Kendall has said, it's many animals who are "staying" and others who are coming here that never were here in my lifetime. I only have 45 years watching all of this but the changes are dramatic and are happening at an increasing rate.

I could cite example upon example...I have pictures and video... but, most important, I have my memory... something is messed up. That's no proof that man messed it up... but it is proof to ME that SOMEthing is going on. And it's unsettling to me.

There are many who say it's cyclical. I ain't convinced about that... if it IS, I hope the cycles are not just seven years. >;-)

Some people try to pretend they are not haters - just not taking sides with either of the major political parties in the USA. But then these dickheads reveal their true minds and their true sources of "information" by repeating outright lies that can be found nowhere but Fox News and Free Republic.

If you want to see and hear the exact lines in a 2008 Obama speech in which he supposedly "promises to lower sea level by three feet", just go here and listen for yourself.

click for the actual video

Did you watch? Did you hear the opening clause of the sentence: "Generations from now..."? Did you hear the actual claim: "the moment when we began to slow the rise..."

"Exxon Valdez oil spill to don't-worry-be-happy because "nature would take care of it"???"

There is a scientific school of thought that too much scrubbing with chemicals delays the recovery of the area. Nature does take care of it, as best it can. That is the opinion of people doing the survey.

Of course the money would be better spend avoiding the problems in the first place but the accountants see the money going out and no disasters, so it is redundant money. But then looking both ways when crossing the road is often redundant, but the consequences of getting that wrong are tangible and painful. Redundancy is a positive, it is insurance but try telling that to the money men.

They do, but the speed of change appears to be unprecedented. Also, it's important to look at our influence on climate alongside our destructive influence on the planet's ecosystems and our devastating effect on species diversity.

We're basically trashing the place, and we're incapable of stopping.

For those who still doubt that we are exacerbating Global climate change.... the proposed actions in reducing CO2 output and more alternative energy use will benefit us, even if those 99% are wrong! One of the paradoxes we face is that we clearly need to build a new global economy based on non-fossil fuels. Of course this will require a new global infrastructure. Of course this will require energy to build. And what source of energy must we use to build this new infrastructure?....you got it!

Our choice is to pretend there is no problem and suck the hydrocarbons until they are gone, and we are stuck with nothing and face global economic collapse and upheaval (think Mad Max), or exploit what is left but use it to build a new sustainable human society.

Amazingly, the Koch brothers and their ilk make money on hydrocarbons either way, so I really don't see why they and their minions continue to deny that we have a looming catastrophe. I suspect it is because they simply cannot admit that the Looney Greenies might actually have a valid point.

Announced just a short while ago, fracking comes to the UK. FRUCK!!

>>>"The government has given the go-ahead for a firm to resume the controversial technique known as fracking to exploit gas in Lancashire.

Conditions have been imposed to minimise the risk of seismic a
ctivity.

Fracking involves creating little explosions underground, then injecting water and chemicals to release gas trapped in cavities in shale rocks.

The firm, Cuadrilla, was stopped from fracking after two small earthquakes.

In the US, exploitation of shale gas boom has sent energy prices tumbling, and the Prime Minister has expressed hopes that the UK can enjoy a similar boom.

But government advisers warn today that shale gas may be unlikely to bring down energy prices much in Britain.

In fact, the Committee on Climate Change warns that relying heavily on gas for future electricity supplies would leave households vulnerable to higher bills in the long run as the price of gas on the international market is volatile.

The UK won't benefit from substantially lower prices unless the rest of Europe decides to back shale gas too, as Europe has a gas grid that allows gas to be traded to the highest bidder.

The CCC has examined the potential impact on bills of different energy systems and predicts that subsidies to renewables and nuclear would put about £100 on household bills by 2020, but that by 2050 a gas-based electricity system might cost people as much as £600 extra.
Infographic

Today's fracking decision has created political excitement as the Prime Minister the Chancellor and some business leaders have spoken enthusiastically about shale gas.

Environmentalists are more cautious following incidents in the US in which fracking has been associated with pollution of water through the chemicals involved in the process, as well as leakage of methane - a powerful greenhouse gas as well as a local air pollutant.

They say fracking will generate much more opposition in the UK than it has in the US as it involves turning green fields into industrial sites.

They also worry that an abundance of domestic gas will tempt politicians to abandon targets for cutting greenhouse gases, which are rising inexorably globally to the alarm of scientists.

A poll suggested that people would prefer to have wind turbines on the horizon than gas rigs.

Steve Radley, Director of Policy at EEF, the manufacturers' organisation, said the UK should do whatever possible to keep energy costs down: "This is a major threat that needs to be addressed now as we cannot continue to load industry with costs which are in excess of our competitors.," he said.

Caroline Flint MP, Labour's Shadow Energy Secretary, said: "Labour has always said that fracking should only go ahead if it is shown to be safe and environmentally sound. If the Government believes that this is the case then we will look carefully at their proposals.

"But the idea that this form of gas extraction can have the same impact here in the UK as it has had on gas prices in the United States is considered wishful thinking by most experts."
