BS: Yet another wacky Bobert story...

Subject: BS: Yet another wacky Bobert story...
From: Bobert

So this past Tuesday or Wednesday, I donno, I was at the local nails place getting a nail put on my picking finger and there was a lady next to me getting all ten and me, well ya' know I'm gonna be talkin' shit and so this lady and I get talkin' and she wants to know why I was getting just one nail so I told her and then we get talkin' music and me talkin' blues and next thing we're talkin' about her husband... Seems that hubby just don't do what he's 'sposed to and...

...well, this ain't goin' where you thought it was 'cause...

...in this case it was a clock that she wanted to give away???

Well, seein' as there have been a lot of clock stories of late her in the Mudpit I figured that I'd ask her about it and next thing ya know this ol' gal is offering this clock to me???

Hey??? Free???

So, in spite of a recent inhury, I had a neighbor drive my truck to this ladies house this morning and there in her garage was a perfect 1958 Ridgeway Model 127 grandfathers clock?!?!?!?...

So it's out i the gargage and I have the original owners card and some envelopes with spare parts and a warrent bbok and an owners manual, to boot...

I am clueless what to do with it but...

This lady referred to this clock as a "grandmothers clock"???

No matter, it's in my possession now... It's real 50s-ish... I mean, well made and all but kinda dated...

Don is on the right track, Bobertz. Get the brand name, model number, and do a search. You'll probably find one on Ebay or some other auction site and you can get an idea what it's worth.

Well, I don't have a clue, Chongz... Yeah, I know the story sounded fishy and it is but I don't know why she gave me the clock... BTW, she also gave my neighbor, who drove me over there, a gas grill which works...

I donno about finding one on the inter net... I punched in the model number (127) and the nane (ridgeway) and the year it was built (1958) and ain't found nuthin'...

Bobert, a grandmother clock is like a grandfather clock, only smaller.

as for what to do with it, wind it up and use it to tell time.

Okay, Bobertz, there is all kinda info out there about Ridgeway Grandfather clocks.

Take a look at this, for instance:

http://www.nextag.com/ridgeway-clocks-value/shop-html?nxtg=f6b0a500520-DB6D86D55BAB04D6

They appear to mostly run around about $2,000 and up. Looks like they are still in business nowadays. Yers bein' an older one, it might be worth less than the new ones or it might be worth more. Hard to say.

Give them to a local thrift store, Dan. Found out who owned it and bought it for $600 (good money back then), had it towed to my house, spent the next couple weeks workin' on it (yes, rebuilding the SU carbs) and sold it for $2500 (gooder money back then)...

I had a guitar lesson (one-off, done for charity) from a guy who would go to the nail parlor and have long, strong acrylic nails put on his right hand. For picking. Apparently it's pretty normal among serious finger-pickers.

Yes, leeneia, I started doing that a few years back, after seeing another guitarist who was using the acrylic nails. They work wonderfully. You can not only pick with them, you can also "brush" (sweep forward across the strings) with them, and they won't break.

They have been a huge asset to my guitar playing. I have to get "fills" put in at the back about every 6 weeks as the nail grows out, and it only costs $15 to do 4 nails on the right hand. A bargain. I'll never go back to using uncoated nails.

Oh, gee. Bobert. I didn't know the clock was "60's looking." I can see how that would evoke bad vibes. For me, a 60's look brings back memories of trudging to school in bitter cold, of having to listen to pipe organ on dreary Sunday mornings, of the Kennedy asassination, of early Beatles sounding like cicadas....

arrgh!

If the P-vine keeps the clock, maybe you could do some kind of exorcism.

04 Dec 12 - 04:30 PM (#3447030)
Subject: RE: BS: Yet another wacky Bobert story...
From: GUEST,leeneia

Some players cut their nails at a slant, with the corner towards the thumb down low and the corner closer to the pinkie up high. Then they can use either the soft part of their fingertip or the part with the nail behind it to hit the string.

I've tried it, and it works, but I'm not dedicated enough to get really good at it. It's called the 'flesh and nail' method.

When I saw Martin Wyndham Read using a thumbpick, I knew in my heart that was the method for me.
========

Pete, I meant do an exorcism to get the bad 60's karma out of the clock, not out of the P-vine. P-vine probably wasn't even born yet.

I used to use thumbpicks, but I found that they become uncomfortable and they tend to slip out of position sometimes. The armoured nail method is more reliable.

Subject: RE: BS: Yet another wacky Bobert story...
From: Bobert

My picking style is basically "claw hammer" but it has a number of twists... The only time I need the nail is if I am either strumming or alternating claw-hammer with accented down strokes (strum)... Other than that it's a thumb pick (plastic) and two finger picks (plastic on forefinger and metal on middle finger)...

And, yes, fake nails allow the first two of those styles without any picks at all... Been getting just the forefinger done for about the last 20 or so years...

06 Dec 12 - 01:00 PM (#3448132)
Subject: RE: BS: Yet another wacky Bobert story...
From: Little Hawk

It's not a false nail that I use. It's a layer of acrylic put on top of the existing nail. The acrylic is a white powder in a little jar. It is applied by a brush that is dipped into a clear chemical liquid (acetone?). This turns the acrylic powder briefly into a gloppy clear viscous semi-liquid that is quickly spread on the nail, using the brush. It is spread out in a even layer, about a millimeter thick, on top of the entire nail. It begins to harden within less than 30 seconds, and sets up in about a minute, I'd say. It is then sanded and filed lightly to the final shape.

What you have then is a heavily armoured nail that is virtually unbreakable under normal circumstances, and works great to play the guitar.

The nail polish and such strengtheners never worked for me. I have extremely soft nails. The only ones that are "standard human strength" naila are those that I damaged violently while working and that is due to the reaction to such trauma because I have mild psorisis. That stuff just made using picks a chore when I had to and made pain when I did mess up a nail. Kinda like drivin a 4X4 in the backwoods... ya go where a regular truck won't go so, when ya do get stuck, ya REALLY get stuck. But, yeah, pickin with natural nails, painted or not, beats picks anyday.

Regular disclaimer... I was not ever a good player in the LEAST! Nor I am anywhere near qualified to comment on such matters. I sounded okay in the kitchen when everyone was under the inluence. Well, at least when *I* was. Maybe when the others told me I was entertaining they were just being polite, eh? >;-) (That includes YOU, buddy... the last person that ever heard me strum a string... you know who you are. When you said here in Mudcat you enjoyed it, my heart soared. Thanks again. If you ever drop in again, I'll have a go on yer geetar fer old time's sake. But, ya gotta bring that there good whiskey again. I still have the glasses... thanks.)

"pocket watch sent to me from NY by a buddy for free and I think it's worth far more than any amount of $."

I just noticed an echo here. Actually my deal was, I paid two bits or some such for a non-running old pocket watch with no crystal to put in still life photos. Then some crazy guy in NY asked about buying it for parts. Instead he got it all fixed up, and sent it back with a great old mellow chunky chain. I've found a couple of excuses to wear it for special occasions, with a vest my current lover made for me.
I don't know that I'm as attached to my watch as gnu is to his, though; I might consider letting mine go for an even million bucks.

Henry - Yes, you can do the acrylic powder and accelerator thing at home. I know one folk musician who's been doing his own nails that way for years. I guess it might take some practice to get it right, though...a few trial runs.

I just get the Vietnamese guys (or girls) to do it over at the local "Le Nails" for about $4 per nail, and I need 4 nails done on the left hand only. For some reason it's always Vietnamese staff in those places. I have no idea why, but they must have a lot of schools for it in Vietnam or something.

One thing is, you have to work quickly with the stuff after it hits the liquid accelerator. You've got maybe 20 seconds to spread it evenly over the nail before it starts to set up.

Oh, and you also have to clean the nails with alcohol before applying it (to remove any natural oils) and then sand them lightly with a fine grit sanding pad or sanding wheel on Dremel Moto-tool, so that the acrylic will adhere well to the nail's surface after it hardens. If this isn't done, it can tend to lift off the nails at some point.

I use a Dremel tool with a sander attachment on it about once a week to sand them back at the front as they keep growing out and getting longer. It takes too long filing them by hand.

Ooops. Sorry. It's the right hand I get the nails done on. Yes, I play right-handed like most people do.

I do use the thumb and three fingers when picking...depending on the picking pattern. Some patterns only require the thumb and 2 fingers. Thumb is for alternating base, naturally. The 3 treble strings can be played using either 2 fingers...or 3. If you use 3, then the ring finger takes the 1st string. This is useful in certain picking patterns.

Thumbnail is great for long strums too. Carter picking can be done with thumb and 2 fingers. Fingers do the strums in that case, brushing forward and back, thumb does the base.

Bobert... I bet you wouldn't shoot pool or throw darts for money with me either. Hahahahaaa.

Seriously, I was only ever "good" on Rhan. As much as Rhan is shit on above and below the line, Rhan is GOOD when it is good and I am proud to say I once was beyond good. I tuly am sad I lost the ability due to injury and disease. Bones, strings, whistles... nah... I miss my Bodhrans. Terribly so. I even miss playing cardboard boxes and plastic gas cans and beer bottles and pots and pans with my ciapan (tipper)... and beer cans?!... well, that was a treat for everyone that saw and heard what I could do with an empty beer can if I do say so myself... and I do.

Sigh... sorry. Just feeling sorry for myself. Pathetic. For all and sundry... make as much music as you can EVERY day that you can... it's a treasure.

Hey, Shane has had ambitions ever since he was 8 or 10 to be a Heavy Metal Rock God and play incredible screaming guitar solos and "service" hordes of groupies after every show...but all he can do to this day is play...air guitar.

He's not bad, though, as air guitarists go.
