Dec 12 - 10:36 AM (#3447427) Subject: BS: if you love birds From: GUEST,leeneia I'm a dedicated bird watcher, and so is my husband. We have enjoyed many wonderful trips based on birds. Yesterday we visited the site of the Cornell Ornithology Lab and saw that an unknown donor is matching donations, dollar for dollar. So we made a donation. What pleasure it is to know that we are helping rhe birds and also sucking money right out of the pockets of some fat cat! So I respectfully suggest it as a good place for one's own Christmas giving and Christmas presents on someone's behalf. Give me a sec and I'll make a link. |

Dec 12 - 08:43 PM (#3448355) Subject: RE: BS: if you love birds From: kendall The Black cap Chickadee is Maine's state bird. I feed them all fall, winter and well into the spring. I love it when they get impatient and come to the feeder before I finish filling it. Sometimes they land on my fingers. They are surprisingly strong in their feet. We also get Downy Woodpeckers, Piliated Woodpeckers,Cardinals, Sparrows, Nuthatches, Yellow Finches, Purple Finches, Mourning Doves and Turkeys. They always disappear around Thanksgiving. NO! I would never kill one. |

Dec 12 - 11:18 AM (#3448634) Subject: RE: BS: if you love birds From: Ron Davies The degree of cynicism around here is striking, to say the least. I agree, Leeneia; I think the Cornell Lab is a worthwhile group. I give to them. I think it's interesting that ranges are definitely changing, evidently due to global warming. We used to get black-capped chickadees and both white-breasted and red-breasted nuthatches; now we get only Carolina chickadees and white-breasted nuthatches. And we also have some hardy robins and mockingbirds who don't fly south at all. That's new, too--admittedly I've been in this area for a while. |
Dec 12 - 06:59 PM (#3448970) Subject: RE: BS: if you love birds From: GUEST,leeneia According to my Peterson's, mockingbirds don't migrate. but I know what you mean about warming. Kendall and Bobert, it's nice to know you're into birds too. |
Dec 12 - 12:09 AM (#3449070) Subject: RE: BS: if you love birds From: Ron Davies I think I read that some robins and some mockingbirds migrate, some don't. Virtually a sub-species. |
