BS: Whadja git fer Christmas 2012?

I got a bed comforter for the yard sale (the wrong size and comfoters for a bachelor??? WTF???). I got two sets of cheap bedsheets for the yard sale. I got a variety three pack of tins of Planters peanuts for the food bank (can't eat peanuts so I get them every year... last year I got two variety packs). And, I got, from a relative who makes oodles of coin in his high paid profession, a door mat that lights up when you step on it with my fav team's logo!... that I can't put in the tard sale or allow ANYONE to wipe their feet on.

From Mum, I got excellent gifts and vice versa.

So, I think I win all categories.

Great gifts : My mother's love AND the great gifts from her.

Crap gifts : ALL the others.

WTFIT?! gifts : A fuckin doormat I can't use or sell ya cheap bastard!?

Anyone get anything good or bad? Do I have ANY competition out there?

I am gonna hafta put a lot of thought into my gifts for them next year but I seriously doubt if I can bottom their gifts to me in 2012. I would be embarrassed.

Before you ask, yes, I did get them nice gifts, nicely wrapped and each one came with a clever joke which invoked laughter. I was pleased with my efforts. 2013 will be different.

I got so many toiletries, soap and cheap perfume, I must smell very bad. Also lots of sweets I don't like, including 'natural' liquorice. People must think I smell because I'm constipated. I'm seriously considering telling everyone next Christmas that we're not giving any presents and will donate to charity instead. I did get a few good books, detective stories etc. And my dear husband got me some super coffee, sugar and tea caddies. He has no work so it was sweet of him to get me those.

Eliza... tell them you are gonna give their gifts that they give to you next year to charity... so they should give some DECENT gifts next year... dammit!

Of course you can't actually do that but iddintit the thought pleasantly diabolical? Deliciously vengeful?

I absolutely abhor gift giving bettween adults unless it's "intimate" on some level.

Cheap bedsheets? I have worn bedsheets I would put out for guests before I allowed them to bed down on that crap. I could stomach it if they were "poor" but fer gosh sakes! So, when I said to the nephew last year after Kissmeass (the cheapo that gave me that welcome mat) "What say we only give gifts to the kids next year because I am tired of taking most of it to the Red Cross?", I was taken aback by the nasty response. Last year, I donated all of the gifts to the Red Cross or the food bank except the... OMGoodness... Patriots hoodie... 2XL... 2XL AFTER I had just lost 110 pounds on a diet. Patriots TOUCHDOWN but relatives 15 yards personal foul penalty.

Am I the only one that thinks all this consumerism HO HO HO crap is crap?

Anyway, I still think I am in the lead as far as crap gifts.

I like this season (I actually enjoy shopping for others more than getting gifts myself).

Main gift - a fairly good metal detector - seems like an interesting gadget that I may try out if the right situation arises next spring/summer (I got nice stuff in past seasons that still remains boxed, like a lathe, which I plan to use someday - if I get around to it:)?

A nice bird feeder - (nice, as I value my relationship with wild birds).

Interesting additions to my wood carving instruments, nice shirts, winterwear, a couple of good bottle of booze and a few good cigars, good junk food (I like 'em),lotto tickets (I won $10.), Bob Dylan's new CD (seems not much better than his last one) Jim Treliving book (Decisions), book on the life of Ce Lo Green, whole bunch of personal grooming stuff.

Christmas cards, facebook messages, a few phone calls and christmas greetings from friends relatives and neighbours, and good company.

Most important of all: a kiss and hug from my spouse, a phone call from my son living on the other coast, and a few big seasonal hugs from my daughter and two grandkids - one year old and four year old girls - aren't kids especially wonderful at Christmas time :)

Nuffin.

We spent our money on our big trip to Canada recently so that was our gift to each other, and we treated ourselves to lunch at a local restaurant.

But I had one gift to unwrap yesterday, a Canadian friend gave me a present as we were parting (we exchange small gifts each year) and I saved it to open on Christmas Day. A scenic calendar of the Butchart Gardens which we visited with said friend and her husband (which will bring back nice memories of those visits) and some Canadian quilting fabric with maple leaves and mooses, I have in mind a use for it already!

Cheers

my best pressie is an exquisite Swarovski crystal teddy bear from my dearest fiend & his partner, last year they gave me a a pink crystal poodle, supposedly a christmas decoration, which I keep in front of my computer. The bear has joined it so I can admire them every day.

I also received several secret santa pressies: a patchwork covered coathanger with glasses/phone holder; a delicate enamel christmas bell that tinkles gently, & I'm still awaiting what I always think of as my main pressie, the one from my Mudcat Secret Santa which I hope to find at the Post Office on Thursday when it reopens.

Other pressies from friends were 2 coffee cups (sigh, I don't drink tea or coffee) but one is already in use as a pen holder; an extravagant pen decorated with feathers & a nodding owl ornament, wot fun!!; 3 tins to put stuff in or use as containers for pressies I give folks; a choccie filled "gold" wire chrissy tree (that friend didn't know I don't eat choccies, but almost everybody I know does so I can easily find them homes.) The tree has become part of my chrissy decorations.

My sister lives in China & is not very communicative, but one day will send me a cheque for birthday/chrissy. When she's next in Sydney I'll give her some Australian books.

As I said elsewhere I never get enough pressies (stick out lip & sulk, hold breath till face turns blue, throw tantrum, etc.), tho reading what thoughtless stuff some folks get, maybe I'm lucky.

And a purple raincoat with a zip-out thermal lining from LL Bean that I have needed for the longest time.

Plus, we were bidden out for Christmas dinner! Sweet!

The oversized sign advertising a lot to be built on close to my house--house would have killed lots of trees in our neighborhood-- was taken down.    We had appealed to our Councilwoman to have this done, and I also filed the appropriate objection.

Just about the best Christmas present I could get.   Got it early--24 Dec.

Now we have to make sure the house is not built. We stopped a developer years ago. I think we can do it again.

Chocolates from our broker and a pair of bed socks from a friend.

Basically we've given up giving Christmas presents. It really adds to the joy of the season.

We do like pretty decorations and making music, however. I played recorder at two churches on Christmas Eve and at one on Christmas Day. I guess you could think of that as giving the listeners a gift of music.

My 19 year old son drew my name this year, and I have to say I was delighted by the obvious care and thoughtfulness with which he went about choosing his collection of gifts. At my age I really have anything I truly need, and don't have many "wants." Plus don't have much room in my small house for most of the few wants I might otherwise have. He gave me three small, muslin-lined baskets for bread or crackers packed with a garlic dipping oil, herbs to add, a jar of a tomato/roasted pepper dip/spread, a jar of onion blossom-mustard dip, a bag of dipping pretzels, an oil "mister" (fill with olive oil and pressurize to lightly mist cooking pans, salads, veggies for roasting, etc.,) a "wine saver" gizmo that partially creates a vacuum seal for unfinished open bottles of vino, and advised me that he still owed me a locally baked sourdough banquette to serve up as the inaugural launch of the goodies.

I think I might have to have a pre-New Year's gathering in appreciation.

Our immediate family began drawing names several years ago, but Mom can not resist putting together token gift bags for her two living daughters. A couple of locally produced culinary delights in the form or preserves and pickles, really great wall calendars with relatively non-commercial pnotographs from around our home state, and small and large Smithsonian appointment books for 2013.

The best gift was being together, as many of my small family as could be, to celebrate our love and caring and pleasure in being together.

Latest Ian Rankin, first body doesn't arrive until p215!

JtS,

The olive oil mister is called "Misto". SKU is 5061116. Lots of places carry them - in kitchen gadget stores or on-line. Son didn't think to remove the price tag on anything so I know he payed $9.99 at a kitchen gadget outlet at the local Tanger Outlet. On-line prices range from $10-$20 bucks. Has an aerosol type spray head. Pump the lid to pressurize the canister. Dispenses the oil in a fine spray.

Other than a test spray into the sink just now I haven't used it yet. Straight olive oil - nice fine spray. Looking at my kitchen sink, the spray is not quite as fine as a can of commercial cooking spray such as "Pam", but still quite fine and evenly distributed, and would result in using much less oil but applied more evenly, than the proverbial "drizzle lightly" or "toss" with olive oil." Also less expensive buying commercial cans of oil sprays.

I got my sister one last year and she loves it. Uses it to spritz veggie salads with a combination of olive oil and vinegar or lemon, to spritz fruit salads with lemon or lime juice or to spritz veggies before roasting, broiling or cooking quickly in a non-stick skillet. She also uses it to baste baked birdies. Also know several other people who use them and swear by them. It can be used with any oil, vinegar, lemon or lime juice, or a mixture of oil and the others. (I'd probably first decant raw apple cider vinegar, lemon or lime juice through a fine screen or cheese cloth to keep the pulp or precipitates from clogging the sprayer.)

Sis has had her's for a year and uses it frequently, so apparently they are sufficiently durable. The package insert says when fully pressurized it will spray for about 15 seconds before you need to pump it up again.

Apparently made by Farberware.

A tropical fish tank for my study from my responsible adult. Money to buy some fish etc for it from my two sons and daughter in law.

One son also bought me the Viz annual "The billposter's bucket."

6 bottles of wines from a couple of small wineries we visited in California a couple of years ago, (thanks Carmel Cheese Shop (!)   Basically six Pinots and six Zins.

The logistical challenge of cooking a 9Kg goose. Seemed a good idea till I got the bugger home. Seriously, once dressed, his arse over one side and his neck over the other, and those ends had to fit into the rails of the Aga oven. I always said Aga ovens were goose shaped, never allowed for a quasi swan... Good job we had the paddle then. Hitherto used for pizza cooking, it helps to giive the bird a good whack on the rear.   Of course, getting it out again six times in order to collect enough fat for next year (century) of roast spuds & parsnips was a bit of an issue, but we got there.

I believe there is a photo of the thing on Face Book, but not being modern enough, I don't know my responsible adult's name she uses.

When I lived in digs in Glasgow, some Skye cheuchters lived in the same flat and we shared a kitchen. They spoke Gallic all the time, which I loved to hear. One evening they put an enormous goose in the oven and opened a few bottles of whiskey. Once they were well and truly blotto in their room, a river of fat oozed out of the oven, across the floor and down the stairs to the hallway. I did nothing about it, and later I heard a torrent of Gallic as they tried to stem the flow and mop it up. I've never fancied goose since, as it smelled a bit ripe to me.

I got a free TV, a huge one to replace my tiddly little one when the sound on it failed on Christmas Eve morning. Not really a present, just got lucky on Freecycle, but it is great; I'm really happy.

Don't Agas have hanging points in the top of the oven for roasting geese?

The idea is to suspend them so that the fat runs off and leaves the skin crispy, but it does mean that you can fit in a larger bird than would go horizontally.

Loved my fairy-tale book esp. since I write myself. Very impressed they (staff) gave gifts at all – plenty of these places don't. Hugged the staff that gave me said gifts. I think they were quite surprised. They're used to people complaining about what they don't have or can no longer do.

Had said Pentangle album on today – was finding said move & ensuing lifestyle change very difficult. Said staff seem to think my cds are great & keep wanting them on.

Oh, dear. I suppose I should be nicer, but the truth is I frequently like the gifts I give more than the gifts I receive. Yes, yes, I know it is better to give than to receive, but . . . .

In fact my English friend gave me lovely gifts, including a shawl and an evening bag I think she bought at a local craft fair. But her best gift--the best I've received so far, Is two copies of an alphabet book she illustrated and for which her friend wrote the text. I will give one copy to my grands and keep the other for myself!

I got a cool device that allows me to plug my guitar into my iPhone. I've stopped carrying a tuner with me because the tuner in my phone is better and it means one less device to carry and keep powered. The problem, of course, is that in a room full of people all tuning instruments at the same time the ability to plug in is good. This input device also turns my phone into a complete effects box, which is more useful for the electric guitar I rarely use, but still fun for the acoustic sometimes.

I also got a little bag of whiskey rocks. They work great -- they cool the Scotch without diluting it. Now I can really have whiskey on the rocks!

Gift card for the only store in which I don't hate to clothes shop. I do need new pants, so this is good timing.

Candy, which has already been re-gifted.

Pair of ceramic mugs with lids, for making single cups of teap came with tea bags we won't consume and cookies we will. It remains to be seen how tea tastes when made in the mugs before deciding their fate. Some mugs make good tea and some don't.

Bath & hand towel set. Again. Even after the rattiest ones previously on hand were relegated to the dog towel stash, there is no room for the new ones in the linen closet. So we'll continue to make sure we always leave a couple in the laundry. Or the dogs will start to have their muddy paws cleaned (snowy paws dried) with nearly new towels.

Considering the condition of most of the world, I feel incredibly privileged to have these silly "problems."

Hiya,

The dichroic glass necklace I got looked like something from fairyland. I luv it. Only problem is it's on a chain. I can't wear chains unless they're long ones because my neck's so stiff.

A great jewellery tidy. I can actually see what I've got now, realised I don't actually wear/like half of it (all given as gifts) & am now working on filling it up with the type I actually do like, which looks like this http://www.opal-moon.com/userimages/procart48.htm

Note to Rapparee -
You're gift should arrive any day now. Sorry that Santa and an online seller didn't work out delivery in time for Christmas.

Ya know... I forgot to mention one of the most special gifts I have ever received. olddude recently sent me an Illinois railroad watch made in 1890. Not technically a Christmas gift but close enough to be worthy of mention.

A special water hose to give us water access inside. Considering that the windchill is waaay below 0 F; I am grateful. We can fill our water jugs from the basement rather than from the outside spigot.
