I just found out that retired General Norman Schwartzkopf, who died today, was an autoharp player and lover of folk music. DK if he ever recorded any music though.

Did Harvey get his $$$ out of Polygram? I know it's off-topic, but there it was right next to the topic...

I knew old Norman was a unusually well-educated and thoughtful guy for a modern warrior, but had no idea.

How sad a commentary on our society is it that he felt he had to keep this secret--the last taboo? Every proclivity or imperfect behavior is forgivable, but don't admit you're a folkie, you'll be mocked into irrelevance.

My vision of the traditional afterlife just expanded to include golden *auto*harps...

What a surprise! His book "It Doesn't Take A Hero" is a good read.

I don't know that Gen. Schwarzkopf tried to keep his love of folk music or his autoharp playing a secret. The way I learned about that was from a woman who called Norman Goldman's radio talk show, on the day Schwarzkopf died, and said that she met the General at the Telluride Folk Music Festival a few years back and helped him tune his autoharp, and that he told her he really loved folk music. That doesn't sound like someone trying to keep a secret. I think it's more that the news media probably never paid much attention to anything but the General's military activities and views.

Wonderful.

Autoharp, banjo.

Looks like I should continue my search.    There's gotta be a general for the viola also.

Another amazing coincidence . I read just two days ago that Charles Manson played the guitar.

Didn't the Roman Emperor Nero play some sort of a musical instrument as well - or was that Caligula?

I have this wonderful vision of Mike Harding, leading the troops into battle, banjo frailing.

Not only did Manson play guitar, but he had aspirations to become a pop star, and befriended the Beach Boys, who recorded one of his songs Before they started to get creeped out by the way he insinuated himself into their lives, particularly Dennis Wilson). Rumor has it he also auditioned for "The Monkees" TV show. And when he sent his "family" members to the home of Sharon Tate, it was because it had formerly been the home of Terry Melcher, a producer (and son of Doris Day, I believe) who had declined to sign Manson to a record deal.

Norman Schwartzkopf is another story altogether -- as a long-time admirer, I'm glad to learn this about him.
