Evidently it was Collins who had the band which Frank Zappa joined and which became the Mothers of Invention. They parted ways, however, and Collins lived somewhat "off the grid" and as a transient ever since. Interesting to hear that he had been spending his final years in "the Village" of Claremont, California (where I now reside). (Zappa had also attended Pomona College here.) Anyone not knowing would probably suspect Collins was "just a bum," without realizing he was instrumental in starting the whole Mothers thing. I myself wonder why he'd have chosen Claremont -- a town quite unfriendly to transients -- as the place to spend all these years. Perhaps irrelevant, but the Folk Music Center and Museum (set. 1958) is also in the Claremont Village. |

He was underrated and overshadowed. This is from Cruisin' with Ruben and the Jets Ray Collins sings "Anything" , supposedly a doo-wop parody, but actually a beautiful R & B ballad. He was one of those performers who wanted to play what he liked, and found it easier to let it go than to go where others wanted him to. Still, he left us some great music. |
