25 Jan 13 - 09:34 AM (#3471195) Subject: RE: Music: ~*~Stourbridge Folk Cub~*~ From: GUEST,Breedloveboy Its a shame but pretty consistent with the general demise of Folk Clubs. There is no longer the call for Guest Booking Folk Clubs that there once was. I see the main reasons as being; a) People are not prepared to pay the current of entrance fee needed to underpin the Artist Fee. b) The age group that traditionally supported Guest Booking Folk Clubs is slowly disappearing and not being replaced by younger age groups. c) Many of the Artists these days are quite simply not good enough to entertain an audience for two or three hours. The current crop of three chord, introspective, singer songwriters being a good example. If I am to pay £10 I don't want to go home feeling sad or guilty about something or other. There is still a reasonably vibrant scene as regards clubs that meet for sessions and/or singarounds, and for me thats what Folk Clubs should be about. However, somewhere along the line Guest Booking seems to have put itself at the forefront of the argument, when to me it couldn't matter less. The important thing is people come together to sing, play, learn and generally socialise, and Guests only get in the way of that. |

27 Jan 13 - 08:15 AM (#3471976) Subject: RE: Music: ~*~Stourbridge Folk Cub~*~ From: Noreen I think there is a great danger of drawing false conclusions about the starting up and ending (if it has indeed done so) of Stourbridge Folk Club. Just because this didn't work, on a Tuesday night, in this particular venue, with these particular artistes, doesn't mean that there is no future for folk clubs in general, as some seem only too eager to say. Perhaps there is more scope for finding out what sort of club people want and will be prepared to support, rather than criticising people for staying away- as has been done elsewhere. |
27 Jan 13 - 03:28 PM (#3472139) Subject: RE: Music: ~*~Stourbridge Folk Cub~*~ From: GUEST,Bignige The problem with starting any new Folk Club is that you are relying on the same people that frequent other clubs on different nights, and in the current economic climate shelling out £5/10 two or three times a week is just not on, add to that the cost of petrol and drinks and it just isn't likely to happen. |
