Sussex Annual All-Day Singaround 19 January

14 Jan 13 - 02:52 AM (#3465793)
Subject: Sussex Annual All-Day Singaround 19 Feb
From: Valmai Goodyear

Royal Oak, Barcombe, East Sussex BN8 5BA

The day begins as usual with an hour of join-in tunes while people arrive. Singing starts at noon; ballads and the occasional instrumental party piece will be very welcome. There's a break from 6.00 - 7.00 p.m. After the break we'll continue the singaround, and after completing the circuit of the room we'll try to put on anyone who hasn't yet sung. Food is on sale until 9.00 p.m.

11.00 - 12.00                 Tunes session led by Bryan Creer
12.00 - 1.30 p.m.         Dave Earl and Elizabeth Rimmington
1.30 - 3.00 p.m.         Sandra Goddard & Valmai Goodyear
3.00 - 4.30 p.m.        Diane & Steve Nevill
4.30 - 6.00 p.m.         Liz Randall & Steff King

6.00 - 7.00                 BREAK

7.00 - 8.30 p.m.         Hilary Ward & Valmai Goodyear (will encourage anyone who hasn't sung to come forward)
8.30 - 11.00 p.m.         Peter Collins (to arrange generous final hour of choruses)

We MC in pairs, with one person collecting names and making sure people get good notice of their turn, so you know you can go to the bar or the loo without getting missed. The other MC calls out the names before and after each person has sung, so if you didn't hear the name when they started you should be able to catch it afterwards. There is plenty of space and the acoustics are good. It usually takes 2-3 hours to complete a circuit of the room.

Eeeek! That should be 19th. January, this coming Saturday. If a kindly elf could correct it I'd be very grateful.

Valmai A very impressive line up of MC's (and good singers too)
How crowded does the day get? It's a fair way for me to visit and not get in.
Thanks psychomorris

If you are there all day you should get at least 2 songs maybe as many as 4.

A reminder that I am an idiot and that the Singaround is this Saturday, 19th. January, not 19th. February.

Guest's estimate at the rate of songs is accurate. It takes 2-3 hours to get round the room. We've never turned anyone away, but it can get quite full; that's part of the joy, because the chorus singing is magnificent.

On Sunday 20th. January there is a free ballad session from noon until 3.00 p.m. at the Elephant & Castle, White Hill, Lewes BN7 2DJ, chaired by Stuart Walker. The emphasis is on the great traditional ballads. This is the usual home of Lewes Saturday Folk Club.

Many thanks to Joe for changing the title of the thread to the right date, and my apologies again for putting the wrong one in a hurry.

The local forecast is for a little light snow, but nothing horrendous. I always feel that crisp cold weather adds to the joy of drinking Harveys Old.

It's not too bad at all in Lewes (except for the road outside Goodyear Towers, which is always spurned by the gritters) so we are going ahead tomorrow unless there is very heavy snow overnight.

So glad you're going ahead and hope that everyone stays safe!

We're so sorry that we won't be able to join you today, we had been looking forward to it all year! Alas, we had to make the decision not to travel due to the icy conditions. Be safe and keep warm, and enjoy!

Well, having posted that we weren't going, we suddenly decided to chance the roads and I'm so glad we did. We only went for the afternoon but there was a good crown there with some excellent songs.

In the last hour before the break we were blessed with performances from several 'youngsters' - well, they were younger than me and I'm usually the 'baby' in the room *grin* Great to see these 'youngsters' singing!

Thanks to Valmai, Bryan, Sandra and all the Folks who make this lovely day possible. Hope you all get home safely!

That was an amazing day. The snow inevitably kept some people away, but those who came sang their hearts out and the sound and variety were wonderful. It was very good to see quite a few new faces, especially people with small children, bringing good traditional songs to the day. Enormous thanks to everyone who came despite the weather, and to the Royal Oak for looking after us very well for the full twelve hours.
