21 Jan 13 - 11:16 AM (#3469470) Subject: contemplator site is back up From: open mike I see a discussion of this site from 10 years ago....there are Child Ballads, Sea Chanties, American Folk Songs and more..in midi form. (i did not see a written tunes even though it calls itself a tunebook) http://www.contemplator.com/ there is some mention on the home page that it is being hosted by another person as Barry Taylor was not able to maintain it. |
21 Jan 13 - 11:23 AM (#3469472) Subject: RE: contemplator site back up From: Jeri There is Taylor's Traditional Tunebook (midis) created by Ed Taylor, and hosted AT contemplator.com, by Leslie, who runs that site. |
21 Jan 13 - 11:28 AM (#3469473) Subject: RE: contemplator site back up From: open mike hmm...i did change the title to site is back up ... so no one would be confused to think i was talking about some back-up program.... who is Ed Taylor? and who is/was Barry Taylor? Thanks to Leslie for keeping it available (not there is no tech help associated with this site at this time) |
21 Jan 13 - 12:13 PM (#3469490) Subject: RE: contemplator site back up From: Jeri My mistake. I actually know an Ed Taylor, AKA "Uncle Banjo" who is a local musician, and got stuck on the familiar. Barry Taylor arranged and sequenced the midis in his tunebook. He also is responsible for The Great Canadian Tunebook, which includes lyrics and midis. I should also point out that "Leslie" is actually "Lesley" Nelson, so I got that wrong too. I was aware it disappeared some time ago, but I linked to it a short while ago when it came up on a search for a song someone was looking for. I never really made the connection that it had reappeared. |
21 Jan 13 - 10:36 PM (#3469751) Subject: RE: contemplator site back up From: Barry T I'm surprised and flattered that a few of you still remember! It was 1997 when Lesley and I started our shared hobby of midi sequencing. Back then I used a SoundBlaster16 and software called Midisoft Studio to produce what I often referred to as 'facsimile music'. At the time, folks overlooked the clankety-clank sound because so few people were sequencing folk and traditional music. Relative to nothing, it was outstanding! ;-) I was please when powerful sound cards and large sound fonts eventually started to offer reasonable sound quality, based on electronic sound bites from real instruments. But that was only a temporary improvement, as most browser and motherboard manufacturers quickly stopped catering to midi as a playback format. In recent years web sites offering midi files and autoplay javascript are now flagged as 'malware' by most browsers. On the plus side, YouTube has replaced our facsimile music with audio and video of the real thing. All this means that Lesley and I have retired to midi haven to enjoy listening to the rest of you! :-) |

If by chance you are no longer able to maintain your tunebook, or Lesley can't maintain Contemplator, please contact Max or me. We'll make sure they continue - on his space or mine. And Richie and Susanne (SKW) and others who have Websites with folk music research, the same applies to you. -Joe Offer- joe@mudcat.org |

22 Jan 13 - 07:07 AM (#3469868) Subject: RE: contemplator site back up From: Mr Happy I keep getting a warning from McAfee when I try to access Contemplator, saying its a dangerous site. I've used it loads in the past but never had this before - anyone else? |
22 Jan 13 - 10:29 AM (#3469934) Subject: RE: contemplator site back up From: GUEST,surreysinger sans cookie I experienced the same thing the other day, and also never had that problem before. |
22 Jan 13 - 11:09 AM (#3469954) Subject: RE: contemplator site back up From: GUEST,leeneia I just downloaded a tune from the site, and there was no warning. Thanks, open mike, for pointing out that this wonderful site is back up. I love it for its fine tunes, but even more so for its arrangements. If you want to play with friends or family and you want harmony and variety, the Contemplator is a great place to go. I believe that every serious musician (meaning anybody who reads music and owns an instrument) should have MIDI software on their computer so they can take advantage of the wealth of music in MIDI form. |
22 Jan 13 - 10:57 PM (#3470222) Subject: RE: contemplator site back up From: GUEST,pattyClink I'm always amazed with the Contemplator, wonderful site, and was able to get through despite heavy virus scanning on my pc, yay! |

23 Jan 13 - 09:00 PM (#3470608) Subject: RE: contemplator site back up From: Joe Offer I think the fact that Contemplator automatically plays a MIDI, may cause distress to some antivirus programs. I have found it annoying on occasion. -Joe- |
13 Aug 13 - 10:05 AM (#3548570) Subject: RE: contemplator site back up From: JedMarum I have requested that MacAfee review their warning for this site, however I will not use it while they list the site as dangerous. ... and they DO claim it is a dangerous site. It possible that the site has been hacked and virus or similar maladies planted there among their midi and data files. It is possible that using the site can load your PC with bad stuff, whether you know it or not. I suggest that you do NOT use the site, until you know for certain that it is NOT infected. If your anti-virus software gives you a warning, please request a review of the site from your anti-virus to see if the warning is valid. The more people who request the review, the more likely the problem will be resolved. |

13 Aug 13 - 10:52 AM (#3548588) Subject: RE: contemplator site back up From: JedMarum I found the website's administrator's contact info and sen an email - but the email bounced back as a bad address. Here is what I said in the email - please help get word to contemplator that their great site is being "blacklisted" for whatever reason - and we hope to get the matter resolved:

13 Aug 13 - 12:16 PM (#3548622) Subject: RE: contemplator site back up From: GUEST Contemplator is a wonderful site, and I use it without problems. Note that I don't rely on browser plugins to play Midi files - Iceweasel (Firefox clone) tells me I need to install a plugin to access all the site, but I ignore that. I use a timidity to play Midi files on linux - it looks as though TiMidity (free from SoftPedia.com) is a similar program for Windows. I've tried accessing contemplator using Firefox in WinXP (virtual) and get no warnings from Avast! antivirus. It may be that McAfee is overcautious, but I can't judge that. Phil |
13 Aug 13 - 12:59 PM (#3548643) Subject: RE: contemplator site back up From: JedMarum Phil - I know it's possible (even likely) that there really IS no threat and that these anti-virus things just don't like the automatic Midi play and java script stuff ... the problem is there really might be malicious software on the site. How do we know? |
13 Aug 13 - 04:43 PM (#3548704) Subject: RE: contemplator site back up From: Newport Boy Jed - I agree we need to know, but you can never be certain. The fact that I don't have automatic Midi play, usually have javascript off and don't see any warnings gives me hope. That was me above - I can't get used to having to log on each day. I'm copying my Firefox profile to other computers, and I found that more than half the file size was the cache, so I've set Iceweasel to clear the cache on shutdown until I've got the transfer working. 14 Aug 13 - 11:40 AM (#3548989) Subject: RE: contemplator site back up From: GUEST,leeneia Presumably the musicians here want to use Contemplator's site as a source for beautiful music, because this site has (IMHO) the finest arrangements traditional tunes anywhere on the web. When I want to play a tune, a box pops up with a warning about an ActiveX control. You can read about Active X here: http://www.microsoft.com/security/pc-security/activex.aspx It's no big surprise to get a warning about a site that plays music. Computers were not originally designed to process sound, and sound files used to be very powerful and unpredictable. There are still technicians out there who think that music programs are black magic. Anyhow, on the page I gave above, Microsoft says that if you trust the site, then go ahead. Do I trust Contemplator? Yes. However, if you don't want to do that, you can Save the music to your MIDI program. I did that and didn't get any warnings. Then you can have your virus-checker check it. I did that, and the music was fine. |
