01 Feb 13 - 03:27 AM (#3474239) Subject: Lyr Req: 'All the young men...' From: Phil Edwards I fancied learning a song that begins "All the young men are going for soldiers" but I can't find it anywhere, & can't remember any more than the first line. I've heard it many times & I'm sure it's well-known, but I can't find it anywhere. Presumably I'm muddling the lyrics somehow. (Is it "All the young boys"? "All of the boys"? "Going for sailors"? "Have gone for a soldier"?) Help! |

01 Feb 13 - 04:35 AM (#3474260) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'All the young men...' From: Phil Edwards Nope. It's got a slow tune with a kind of draggy lilt, a slow 6/8 or 6/4. A bit like Crawling and Creeping/The Snoring Maid/Pretty Polly. |

04 Feb 13 - 10:13 AM (#3475650) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: 'All the young men...' From: GUEST,leeneia I remember a scrap of a song I heard on the radio in the 1960's, maybe. It used the tune of "All My Trials" and had the words All the sad young men, goin, goin home again. The singers were males, and their style was polished. Could have been the Four Lads or a similar group. I searched for the song, couldn't find it. |

04 Feb 13 - 06:34 PM (#3475842) Subject: ADD: Anthem of the Rainbow From: GUEST,999 Anthem of the Rainbow lyrics re oldhippie's post. ANTHEM OF THE RAINBOW If all the grasses are yellow Then what color are the tears That are shed for all the young fellows In the armies along the frontiers If all the grasses are purple Then what color is the sky Under which young men are marching For none know the reason why Once you dressed in the colors of flowers Now you dress in black And look out your window for hours For the men to come marching back Well what if the poppies are orange? And what if roses are red? What cares a girl for flowers When the one she loves is dead? If all the rivers are golden Silver, the color of rain When shall a maid and her soldier Feel lovers' warmth again? For what does it matter If October leaves are brown If your love since last September Has been sleeping 'neath the ground If all the grasses are yellow Then what color are the tears That are shed for all the young fellows In the armies along the frontiers |

I think I misremembered Graeme Miles's "Drift from the land" (All the young fellows have gone to the city/All the young fellows have gone to the town). |
