03 Feb 13 - 04:41 PM (#3475385) Subject: RE: Origins: The Day the Music Died From: pdq 1959 must have been a real bad year for Rock'n'Roll. Elvis was in the Army and Buddy Holly died. The airwaves were filled by "spaghetti" R'n'R phonies like Frankie Abalone, Bobby Ridderbelli, Fabiacae and Constance Francospumoni. {Dion was OK} Ricky Nelson kept the music going for several more years more. He was great, my opinion. |

Wilbert Harrison "Charlie Brown"..... The Coasters "What'd I Say"..... Ray Charles "Sea Cruise"..... ??? "Tiger"..... Fabian "Poison Ivy"..... The Coasters I'm sure there were lots more that escape me right now but I really enjoyed that year... 03 Feb 13 - 09:26 PM (#3475460) Subject: RE: Origins: The Day the Music Died From: pdq I know that "Kansas City" was written by Lieber & Stoller, darlings of the Brill Building (the place with the "gold plated door" that Gram Parsons mentioned). The Coasters were outlets for Lieber & Stoller so assume the two songs by the Coasters are also by them. Rock 'n' Roll? More like Tin Pan Alley. "Running Bear" and the "Battle of New Orleans" are really novelty songs, and "What'd I Say" is pure Rhythm 'n' Blues" Not that they aren't good songs, just that they ain't Rock 'n' Roll. |
04 Feb 13 - 12:27 AM (#3475493) Subject: RE: Origins: The Day the Music Died From: Neil D '59 was indeed a bad year for Rock and Roll and not only because of Elvis in the army and the tragic loss of Buddy Holly. Little Richard was only playing gospel, Jerry Lee's career had come to a screeching halt from the scandal over marrying his 13 yr old first cousin and the end of the year saw the beginning of Chuck Berry's legal problems that effectively sidelined him for a few years. The new industry-groomed pop idols were pretty dismal and by the early 60's it was being said that Rock and Roll was dead. Of course all that changed with the Beatles, Motown, Folk crossover artists and the emerging California Scene in the mid to late '60's. |

It could have been so much worse, though - if Waylon hadn't given up his seat... Peter |

BTW, you say "The new industry-groomed pop idols were pretty dismal and by the early 60's...". Perhaps we can separate the folks who were strongly indusrtry-supported from those who were industry-created, such as the two dweebs who did "Tiger" and "Venus". Sam Cooke, the Everly Brothers and Rick Nelson enjoyed great industry support, Buddy Holly, not. I put those four acts as essential. They sound timeless and I have good collections CDs of all but Buddy Holly so far. |

04 Feb 13 - 11:07 PM (#3475904) Subject: RE: Origins: The Day the Music Died From: Neil D Rog, Eddie Cochran was still going strong in 1959 although only 2 of the songs you listed released in 1959 (U S release dates). Alas, another tragedy. Eddie only survived 1959 by 117 days, being killed Apr 17, 1960 in a car crash while on a British tour. Although not so recognized today, he was quite innovative and and had a major impact on Rock Music. It's been said that John let Paul join the Quarrrymen because he could play and sing "Twenty Flight Rock". Ironically, before his own death Eddie had written and recorded the song "Three Stars", a tribute to Buddy, Richie and the Bopper. It was released posthumously. |

Over a year in the making, we snagged everything we could find from numerous sources, including What You Been A Missin' and The Music Never Died. One thing we didn't include was any of the "Picks" vocal overdubs from the 1980s, frankly because we think they suck. You can find them on all manner of budget CDs. But you really don't want to. Tracks making their CD debut include the 7" versions of "Wait Til The Sun Shines Nellie", "Look At Me" and "Mailman...", and the 50s and 60s stereo mixes on Disc Nine. As well as our new, previously unavailable stereo mixes, we managed to dig out one or two exclusives: "Take These Shackles..." on disc one is not only upgraded in sound, but appears without skips for the first time! Also making their bootleg debut (we think) are the BBC "Maybe Baby" and Florida "That'll Be The Day" fragments and the first version of "That's What They Say". We're not sure whether the Hightime fragment is lip-synched or sung live to the record, but it debuts here all the same. We did minimal work on the source material if it warranted it - mostly de-clicking and speed-correction. Also, we fixed the tape glitch on the Palladium "Oh Boy" and combined two different sources of "My Two-Timin Woman" to get the longest version in best quality. When speed-corrected the Vigotone "Last Night" and "Send Me Some Lovin'" turn out not to be alternate takes, just undubbed. Others exist, and may yet escape ( "I Sent You Roses" by Jerry Engler is due to be released later in 2005). Some tracks, which erroneously appeared on previous compilations, have been excluded: Buddy shared a session with Billly Walker on 12 March, 1957, but does not feature on Billy's recordings. "When Sin Stops" by The Nighthawks (Hamilton 50006), on the Vigotone set does not feature Buddy. Similarly, "Oh Boy!" on the Vigotone Set is by Billy And The Glens (Jaro 77006), not Sonny West. The contemptible "Ni**er Hatin' Me" was recorded in the late 60s(!) by Johnny Rebel (CJ. Trahan). 17 Apr 15 - 02:26 AM (#3702378) Subject: RE: Origins: The Day the Music Died From: GUEST,Tunesmith I can't listen to Buddy Holly! His vocal style is far too gimmicky! The black singers back then sounded very natural...even Little Richard! The problem with Buddy is that he took one small element of Elvis's singing style - the hiccups - and then over used it. Indeed, he drove it into the ground. But, as an arranger/guitarist/songwriter, Buddy was terrific. It's just a pity about the singing. |
