Yo Bob, I knew from the title it was your thread!

I'm a fan for sure, particularly of Shel Silverstein's lyrics. Being a sentimental sort, I love "Sylvia's Mother" and "Lucy Jordan" and "Cookie and Lila". But the one I've been singing lately is "Freakin' at the Freaker's Ball". Great fun, and totally un-PC.

My favorite memory of a live Doctor Hook performance (in fact, the only time I saw them) is from Roskilde (Denmark) rock festival, July 4, 1976. The band left the stage except for Dennis Locorriere, who proceeded to sing "Sylvia's Mother", accompanying himself on his Ovation 6-string. While he was crooning the heartbreaking ballad, his bandmates (reportedly inspired by naked hippies in the crowd) came back onstage in the nude, picking up their instruments and accompanying him.

Dennis looked around in disbelief, the said something like "Aw fuck it", put down his guitar and stripped too. Then they finished the song
with every bit of passion and pathos as if everything were normal, dicks waving in the breeze.

It was a moment I'll never forget, and it couldn't have happened anywhere else at that time without the band getting arrested.

Cheers,
Michael

When I get pissed at a session I have been known to launch into I Got Stoned And I Missed It. Saw them in Sheffield City Hall in the seventies - a great, great night.

Hi,

I doubt that Sylvia's mother was a Dr. Hook fan. The one in the lyrics doesn't seem to care much for the singer, and the real one didn't seem to care much for the lyrics.

But you have to like the challenge of "The Cover of the Rolling Stone" (which BTW underneath the caricature is a good song in itself). And eventually it did happen, caricature for caricature . Never found Dr. Hook & Friends - The Cover of Radio Times, though. Anyone know if it's available on line?

They hooked me, so to speak, with Shel's "Freaker's Ball." Howard ame by to pick me up for some reason and he couldn't wait to put the 8-Track tape in his Mach One and play it. Laughed our asses off and played it over and over.......

Remember doing that? Going to an opposite track and in essence rewinding? They were a real pain in the ass but we thought they were the height of technology. AM with an 8-Track.....LOL........We weren't really too big on sound shit back then. If your ccar was crap you did but if you had a serious piece, the sound stuff was inconsequential.

But I got to listening to them and enjoying their whole schtick. One of the guys was a former owner of a house I bought in Nashville years later. The real estate lady treated that as a selling point and if we had found a huge stash of goodies it would have been....LOL....

A truly great band. I saw them about 5-6 times in the late 70's early 80's and musically they were superb and very varied. At one gig in Manchester a woman had taken her young daughter (aged about 12) down the aisle to get a photograph of her with the band in the background. Dennis stopped the band mid-song got the young girl hoisted into the stage and gathered the band round her while the Mother took some photographs, they popped the girl back down and started the song where they had left off to great applause from the audience.

But did Shel ever make it to the cover of the Rolling Stone?

I was introduced to Shel by reading the liner notes, written by Shel Silverstein, on Ramblin' Jack Elliott's first album. Later my kids got some of his poetry books and a recording of him reading them. It wasn't till later I heard what were probably his most famous, but probably not his best songs, Cover Of The Rolling Stone and A Boy Named Sue.

I saw them at Cleethorpes Winter Gardens in or about 1975. They were splendid and had really good harmonies. I still play The Freaker's Ball and I Got Stoned etc.

I think they were wonderful and I agree with Terry that anyone who did that many Shel Silverstein songs couldn't be bad. I always wondered how much of that stoned hippie image was simply put on. They were good musically and in my experience genuinely stoned hippies just sound boringly sloppy.

Always sounded like "bubble gum" music to me. Of the doctors, I much prefer Dr. John.
