10 Feb 13 - 09:20 AM (#3477864) Subject: German song 'Nim uns mit Kapitan'? From: RoyH (Burl) During the 1950's I spent a couple of years in Lippstadt, Germany. There was a popular song of the time about a boy asking a sea captain to take him on a voyage. I've remembered the opening line to this day, but I'd like to know the rest of it. Can anyone help please? At the same time was a young singer, a schoolgirl known as 'Die Kleine Kornelia'. She would be in herlate sixties or early seventies now of course. I just wondered what happened to her. One more thing. Although my memory is fading I can vaguely recall a custom in Lippstadt called 'Schutzenfest' (spelling?). I can't recall any details. What was it? Is it still going? |

From: GUEST,Grishka Schützenfest = marksmen's festival, a tradition in many German-speaking areas, and sure enough, still going, in Lippstadt (never heard of before, but a safe bet!) and elsewhere. The song ("Take me with you, Captain, on the voyage!") is also easy to google, from a film "Käptn Bay-Bay", 1952, there sung by Hans Albers. The composer was Norbert Schultze, earstwhile famous for "Lili Marleen". |

You have brought me some fine memories of dear friends, now dead, who sang me that song. One of them was a member of the band of marksmen with their costumes,wooden rifles and brass band, who marched in the Schutzenfest. (I can't raise an umlaut on my keyboard) It was with these same people I heard Kleine Cornelia on the radio. I remember a picture of her in the paper, standing on a chair to reach a microphone. Good to see that she is still active even though no longer young. I have a smattering of German, but it doesn't smatter far enough to give me a translation of these lyrics. Can anyone help? |

On YouTube, a poster (born 1974) says that his family (in Kiel) had a tradition that on Sunday the first up had to prepare breakfast; then that person could wake the rest of the house--with Hans Albers at full volume. It was part of my childhood near Hamburg. My parents had an old shellac record with this - not by Hans Albers, but I've forgotten the singer's name. I'm sure my brother has still got the record.
