I have been looking for the lyrics to this song for some time now. I have heard that its a 700-1000 year old irish folk ballad. I have had no luch and I have tryed LOTS of avenues including the LIbrary of Congress. HELP!!!! Do you have any ideas? It was recorded by Sheila Chandra within the last 10 years or so but she calls it Dhyana and Donalogue and has changed some of the lyrics and added a verse. I want so much to find the original (or what's left of it after all this time. Thanks so much for looking into this. I really do need some guidance--I am close to giving up. Thanks again, Randi

do you have any of the lyrics Randi?

Initially I would have guessed for BOULAVOGUE because the spelling is similar... but it doesn't sound like it from what you have written....

I have been intending to transcribe and post Al O'Donnell's lovely version of 'Donal Og'. I'll do it tonight or tomorrow for you.

Cheers, Stewie.

If you want a version is Irish (with translation) you'll find it as song No 31 'Donall Og' in Peter Kennedy's 'Folksongs of Britain and Ireland' Cassell, London 1975, page 88.

Cheers, Stewie.

Yeah i like the song too. Did you ever have any luck finding the lyrics? I can make out most of the Sheila Chandra version but would still be intterested to know what the original was.

Pete

DHYANA AND DONALOGUE
(Sheila Chandra)

I saw you first on a Sunday evening
About the old tower as I was kneeling
Upon Christ's passion I was reading
But my eye was on you
and my sore heart bleeding

Oh, Donal Og, can't you feel me near you
Why don't you tremble the way that I do
I'll be your lantern to show you truth plainly
And if you are set on
I'll defend you bravely

Wild as a crow is this heart within me
Dark as your shadow is this grief that blinds me
Stained as a boot print on the polished hallways
And it is you that has stained it
Forever and always

You took what's before me, and what's behind me
You took East and West when you wouldn't mind me
Sun, moon and stars from my sky you've taken
And the God above
Or I'm much mistaken

I saw you first on a Sunday evening
About the old tower as I was kneeling
Upon Christ's passion I was reading
But my eye was on you
and my sore heart bleeding

I think it's 'about the altar as I was kneeling' and
'when you admired me".
