Well, we have a "Rock 'n Roll" thread going so I figured it might be time to take it back a little further and try yet another blues thread so...

...on the other thread I mentioned Dan Pickett, who was one of the first white guys to delve in feet first into the blues but, hey...

...Son House be mah' main man...

Yours???

Well, plenty of folks here know more than me about this stuff, but if we are looking for the song forms, which had the most influence over those which followed, I will go for Robert Johnson. I reckon if you had no Robert Johnson, there would have been no Elmo James... Still, other folks see it differently - and I await your corrections...

As great as Robert Johnson was he was just a link in the chain, his influences have been well documented on disc. There were many great bluesmen in the past that never got as much hype as Robert. Mention blues to many people and if they can come up with any real blues musician's name it will be Robert Johnson thanks to latter day rock players.
I assume that you refer to Elmore James and not Elmo (Bobo Thomas) James.

I probably do mean Elmore... I am talking about the slide player who did "Dust My Broom", "Sho Nuff I Do", "Quarter Past Nine" and all that stuff. It's a long time since I had the album, but it was a beauty!

A great voice and a rich guitar sound. He inspired so many - including the Brits Brian Jones and Jeremy Spencer.

I always think the sweeter styles get a raw deal in these debates. I wonder where Jansch, Renbourn et al would have been without MJH and company.

I always thought that Bert may have had a listen to Scrapper Blackwell at some point re his percussive string snapping style.

Agree with both of the previous posters. MJH is very popular around here and I know that at least one Mudcatter - Jerry Rasmussen - saw him at the Gaslight café. He was definitely a blues musician, but he was not just a blues player. You can hear folk, gospel and ragtime in his playing as well.
I only know a couple of cuts from Scrapper Blackwell, so I won't argue. Bert Jansch had the ability to put an astonishing number of influences together though!
