Lyr Req: My Aunt Jane

From: Clifton53

Now I realize just about everyone knows these lyrics, however, I saw a Tommy Makem special one time that had a whole bunch of other lyrics leading up to the main lyrics that are so well known. He sang it with one of the guys from Barley Bree and they both played tin whistles on it.

Some of the verses started out with "My aunt Jane", and if I recall correctly, had a lot of food treats in the lyric. Can anyone provide these extra verses? And is the version we all know and love the original, and these lyrics added on?

My Aunt Jane is another Belfast street song.... as is... I'll tell me ma.

My Aunt Jane she brought me in
she gave me tea out of her wee tin
half a bap with sugar on the top
3 black lumps out of her wee shop

that's the common version... there are other verses

My aunt Jane has a bell on the door
a white stone step and a clean swept floor
Candy apples, hard green pears
conversation lozenges

My Aunt Jane, she's awful smart
She bakes wee rings in apple tarts
And when Hallowe'en come round
Fornenst that tart I'm always found

OK... translation

bap = bread roll, could be sweetened more like a bun
black lumps = rock cakes
fornenst = close to

we used to sing it while we were skipping, or swinging round the lamposts... thanks for the memories.

another verse I've heard is:

I went to the river and I couldn't get across
I paid 3 shillings for an old jack horse
' Jumped on his back and his bones gave a crack
Who'll pay the shillings till I get back?

Sorry folks, new member, first hit, thought I may be able to help someone who didn't have all the words to the original version,

flaj.
