14 Feb 13 - 08:20 AM (#3479504) Subject: Review: Head, Hands & Feet:a book of OMBs From: Roger the Skiffler When we were touring Canada a couple of years ago we stopped to listen to Dave Harris in Victoria on Vancouver island- a one-man band with an astonishing range of instruments. Later, he posted here asking for contributions to his book on One Man Bands. Later he announced its publication. I put it on my Amazon wishlist at Xmas but ended up buying it myself. It has now arrived. It must have been a real labour of love for Dave. It is a weighty tome (the postage is hefty as a result) but a bargain for the cover price. It is profusely illustrated, mostly in full colour. There is a history from drum and tabor to the electric guys and multi-continent coverage, strongest on North America. The largest chapter is a full biography of my favourite, Jess Fuller and the volume is accompanied by a creditably brief errata slip and list of those players whose details arrived too late for inclusion, with web contacts if available. A very handsomely produced volume I'll be dipping into and poring over for months and I recommend it to anyone who plays or is interested in multi-instrument players. As a retired librarian I was particularly pleased to see it is fully indexed. RtS (who has enough trouble playing kazoo & washboard together) |

But, hey, I still have the drums and all set up in my garage... The best current OMB'r is Ben Prestage... Ya'll Google him up and enjoy... Not to far behind Ben is Seasick Steve who is an American who lives and performs in the UK... One of my favorite old time OMB was Dr. Ross, who is mentioned in the link above... Guess I'm going to have to save up and get this book... B~ |
