From: JohnInKansas I've received a number of "newsletters" (a.k.a. advertisements) recently offering "whitepapers" on who's the best webhosts, but unfortunately had so little interest - and low expectation of running into anyone interested - that I seem to have deleted all the notices. About all I can say is that there is some competition, but I can't say whether the advertisers involved were interested in "generic users" or really only care about "enterprise" accounts. Most of the trash of this kind comes from a "subscription," originally to a "PC Magazine" email newsletter, and/or by their referal of my "subscription" to the parent publisher Ziff Davis. If you have time for a real "study" of what's available, you might try finding an email "news" to sign up for. ZD has a site, once you've registered for one such, where you can pick what other resources you're interested in. (The first email you get will almost certainly have a "manage my account" link at the bottom that will get you there.) If you can, when you sign up for one of these, listing yourself as "in charge of purchases" for at least a "home business" will probably increase the richness your harvest.(?) The amount of junk mail I get from a couple of news reports is sufficient to be mildly annoying, but not enough to wear out my DELETE key. A more direct approach would be just to search for something like "webhost Reviews," and avoid the junk, although the advantage of the "whitepapers" approach is that they're a little more likely than a magazine review to tell you better reasons why they think one is better than another and/or to suggest what's most important to look for (although they're all gonna lie a little, whatever methods you use). From: Mr Red uk2.net But I only use them for the domain name. clue is in the name they are UK based though when I did get indications the website showed a Canadian flag in the URL field. I use Waitrose (UK again) for the pages but I don't do too much in the clever dept (except my own JavaScript). |

The direct link goes to an email address with a "sub string" that would tie it to me, and anyone interested would probably not want to smear their own reputation by an association of that kind, but a link also was buried in the fine print that would allow anyone to order the paper "from scratch" with a clean record. http://www.webhostingunleashed.com/land/dedicated-managed-hosting-comparison/?tfso=11105 The link is to a page where they ask for an email address and a business name etc, (small lies are acceptable, but I wouldn't claim 10,000 employees?) and the company offering this is almost certainly most interested in businesses with a budget, but sometimes the papers offered have information that can be helpful (like how to decide if you need what they offer and when to do something else?). You can look at the link above and decide whether to give them any info without "revealing" anything, and if you can look without buying even asking for the paper shouldn't obligate you to anything (except maybe a few emails that you can "opt out of" if they happen). FYI, for anyone who might want to take a look at it. Sometimes knowing a little about what the "bigger than you are" crowd can help even if you can't play golf at their country club(?). John |
