It was interesting to hear that someone had written a radio melodrama based on a Vaughan Williams/Cecil Sharp character, but everything about the actual play was unmitigatingly terrible. Unconvincing dialogue (formal arguments/debating points cut'n'pasted from textbooks and shoved in the mouths of its characters). Unconvincing plot. Regional accents that kept on slipping. Periodic bouts of those heavy sighing sounds that characters in Radio 4 dramas always make when they're snogging/shagging. Some wince-inducing singing. Topped off with a cheesy ending. |

And like sometimes in the theatre I'll stay after the break solely out of morbid curiosity so did I listen right through. As with writing a song, if you have a good idea, you have a responsibility to make a good job of it or you've spoiled it for someone more able. |

I can't see that. Any number of great songs and plays and stories where the ideas have been used less successfully. In fact probably virtually all of them. There's no copyright in an idea, fortunately. |

I agree that the plot was a bit thin, but I thought it good enough for a half hour's entertainment, subject to the appropriate suspension of disbelief. As for the accents: at least there were some convincing "Geordie Rs", which is better than one might expect from any actor who doesn't come from somewhere between the Tyne and the Tweed. As for the (minimal amount of) snogging: there's not a huge range of possible sounds that could be used in a radio play. What would you prefer? Richard |
