23 Feb 13 - 02:35 PM (#3482957) Subject: Yonder Come My Jesus (old Gospel Song) From: Azizi I happened upon a video of the song "Yonder Come My Jesus" and have since found two more renditions of that song [with slightly different lyrics) in two other videos published by the same poster. I also found another rendition of this song [with similar lyrics, but with a slightly different tune, and a more pronounced "surge style" that was in a video that was posted by someone else. The only other mention of "Yonder come[s] my Jesus" that I have found online to date is in Howard W. Odum's 1909 university dissertation "Religious Folk-Songs Of The Southern Negroes" http://www.gutenberg.org/files/39078/39078-h/39078-h.htm. That line "Oh yonder comes my Jesus, I know him by his shinin'" is given as line #13 in an 19 line excerpt of a "negro" religious song as part of a description about how those songs included concrete descriptions of Jesus. The first video that I featured begins with a rendition of the religious song "Who Is Going Down In The Grave With Me". That song was also unfamiliar to me, but I have since found a sound file of that song which was recorded by Rev. Julius Cheeks. I also have found a sound file of that song as sung by The Mighty Clouds Of Joy. That song is composed of the words: Who is going down in the grave with me [3x] When I die. Jesus is going down in the grave with me [3x] When I die etc. -snip- Although I found recordings of "Who Is Going Down In The Grave With Me", I've not found any recordings of "Yonder Comes My Jesus". I wonder if anyone has ever recorded that song. It seems amazing that a song which has the same tune & has a similar pattern as "Michael Row The Boat Ashore" isn't better known. Are either of these religious songs familiar to anyone here? |

But all the examples I've found of this song- with the exception of the line that Odum cites- gives that line as "Yonder Come My Jesus".) The beginning word in line #3 appears to usually start with "oh".] Well, He's comin on the clouds, now... Well, I said in Heaven I shall see Him.... It was sung during an "offering". An "offering" is when those present (the congregation) give money to the church for its upkeep or for missionary work. A man is heard setting a goal of $500.00 for this offering. Some men (probably the church "Trustees [church officials] are shown counting the money that was given. These lyrics, and the other examples that I've found, are based on descriptions of Jesus, professions of faith, and accounts of Jesus' crucifixion. Italics means that I'm unsure of this transcription. Any information about this song will be appreciated. |

Fenner, Hampton Inst. -snip- The lines "Oh, yonder comes my Jesus, Hallelujah!/I know him by-a His shinin'" is the same as the line quoted by Howard Odum (1909) except that Odum didn't include the end word "Hallelujah. Those lines may have been floaters that were used for multiple songs. Fenner's citation of "oh, yonder comes my Jesus" takes that line back to 1874. Also, the reference to a "ship that neither reels or totters" is similar to the line "Church, the ship done rockin and reelin..." which is found in Example #2 & Example #3 of the "Yonder Comes My Jesus" song that are included in the post on my blog. And the pattern of ending the lines with "Hallelujah" (or using the word "Hallelujah" as a response) is the same in the version of "Old Ship Of Zion" given above, in "Michael Row The Boat Ashore", and in the "Yonder Come My Jesus" examples that I found. And yes, "Yonder Come My Jesus" sounds the same as "Michael Row The Boat Ashore". Certainly, that song sounds more like "Michael Row..." than the Old Ship Of Zion renditions that I'm used to hearing - renditions by the way, that don't have any hallelujah ending or any those lyrics that are given above.
