Subject: BS: You Talk to Yourself???
From: Bobert

Seems that I have been having quite a few conversations with myself of late... I mean, seems that there is nothing I do where I am not having this conversation with myself...

Am I nuts???

'Er what???

Out loud? Me? Nope... but I do talk to 'the universe', saying odds & ends of nonsense.... sometimes just venting.

Pay attention... you might say something you need to remember.

No, I don't talk to myself. That's what all my other personalities are for.

It's okay to ask yourself questions and to answer yourself. But, if you ever ask yourself, "What was that?"...

I talk to myself. I answer myself. Often I know how I will answer before I ask the question. Maybe these conversations are why I don't feel lonely!

Why do people refer to voicing a thought out loud as "talking to yourself", as though that were something weird? It seems like a perfectly normal thing to do to me, and I think everyone does it to a certain extent.

It only becomes a problem when it goes on constantly and the person can't control it, as in the case of someone who engages in continual angry monologues while walking down the street, for example.

As for an internal mental monologue or dialogue...most people do a lot of that too. Again, it only becomes a problem when it becomes uncontrollable. If one is unable to periodically quiet the mind, then one can become tortured by it...through constant anxiety, dwelling on the past, resentment, anger, guilt, extreme self-criticism, etc.

Do you feel that you are being oppressed by this inner conversation you're having, Bobert?

Well, there are times when you want to have an intelligent conversation so you need an intelligent person to converse with.

You're a blues singer, and far as I can tell, all blues singers do that.

Of course. I also tend to apostrophise things [like exclaiming "Stop fighting" me to obdurate things like buttons that won't do up without a struggle or zips that jam in the fabric half way ~~ don't you just hate it when inanimate objects will fight you!]; or to denounce the universe for providing all these Black Holes down which things will get lost or letting them print the paper so that the pages will stick together!

& I still talk to my parents and my first wife, who have been dead for years.

Doesn't everybody?

Musket - I'm in agreement there!

A psychotherapist once told me that there is a school of thought that we all have three separate entities within our minds - the parent, the child and the adult. Most of my self-conversations are between these three.

Jacqui...

The three states (child, adult and parent)are concepts of "Transactional Analysis" found in the book "I'm Okay, You're Okay"... I participated in an all day workshop back when it was the newest thing...

As for my conversations??? Most are work related where I am telling myself what I have to do next... I think it's an organizational thing, I donno... Seems like the more complicated the job the more chatter...

Well, it seems to be a pretty normal thing, Bobert, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I love that comment from Bob Dylan. ;-) He is dead right about songwriting being merely one's conversation with oneself.

But, did she scratch it for you?

You might start to worry if you find youself snarling "Shut the f**k up!" to yourself.

The way I figger it, Bobertz, a person oughta feel free to talk to themselves all they want, not to mention talkin' to their car, the furniture, the walls, the hammer they just hit their thumb with, the nail that just got bent over sideways, etc...

Express yerself! You'll feel better.

The thing is, though, that if a lotta yer talk is just a buncha pretty inane and useless bla-bla, ya might just get fed up with yerself after awhile, right?

If that should happen, and I'm thinkin' that in yer case there is a considerable risk that it might, just yell out, "Shut up, you bastard! I've had enough of yer damn hoo-hah for one day!"

Wait and see if ya get an answer to that...

If ya do, say, "Okay, that's it! I'm puttin' you on notice, sucker!" Get out yer nearest firearm. Make sure it's loaded and the safety is off. Stand in front of the mirror, point it at yer reflection, and say, "There, smart guy...whaddya got to say now?"

And if ya get even one smart remark in return...pull the trigger and blow that fool right off the wall.

You gotta show 'em yer serious, see?

What do you make of a person who seems to answer the questions posed by themself along with a different tonality in thier voic?

Danged, I hate to agree with Chongz... He must have taken one of them (wink, wink) sound-like-you-gotta-a-brain pills...

But, yeah... Why waste all them words on yerself when there are so many other things to talk with... Yeah, I do that...

Might of fact, just about everything I own is "Mister ______" (Tractor, chainsaw, shovel, peace pipe (cough;~), etc.

"So, whaddyathink, Mr. Kubota, you think we're gonna need to bring Mr. Shovel?"...

I tend to talk to inanimate objects. Like when I put a book back on the shelf and it flops over. Then I put it back up where it's supposed to be and it flops over again. Then—it does it again!

Or I pull a Kleenex tissue out of the box and fourteen other tissues insist on coming with it.

That sorta stuff.

I can get kinda harsh.

This can be a very useful habit. You'll never have to worry about the sidewalk being too crowded. Everyone will give you plenty of space.

Sure, I think we all talk to ourselves.    And I sing to myself too.   I've done it for years--especially walking to the subway on the way to work.   It was 4 long songs or 5 short songs to the subway.   Doo-wop songs--8 or 9. And when I'd do it--pretty low in volume--other people would cross to the other side of the street. Who is this guy muttering to himself?

But now technology has caught up to me. It's considered completely normal to talk--even an animated conversation--, sing, etc. to yourself on the street--it's assumed you have a Bluetooth or some other device in your ear.

The truth is, some of them people in public use their cellphone or Bluetooth or iPhone or whatever the hell it is...just to sound like they're havin' important conversations with somebody. They want the world around them to think they have an interesting life! The truth is, they ain't talkin' to anyone at all, they are just pretendin' to. Some of these guys make like they are talkin' to their stockbroker ("Buy 18,000 shares of Amoco! Sell 20,000 of Maynard & Swift! Do it NOW!"), their corporate lawyer ("Let's sue the bastards for all they've got! They won't even be able to eat after we're through with 'em).", or their buddy the senator ("So, how's it going with the budget deal, Jack? You holdin' the Speaker's feet to the fire on this one?"), or even the friggin' president("Let's get together in the Lincoln Room tomorrow, Barry. I gotta show you this new idea I've got for puttin' the squeeze on Tehran. You'll have 'em eatin' outta yer hand.")

...and there ain't nothin' but dead air on the other end of that line, cos they just phoned their own answerin' service.

I daresay, Don; but somehow I feel that I should find gently requesting

"I beg you not to be so innately perverse, if you would be so good, dear kind inanimate object"

somewhat less satisfying than shrieking multidecibly

"Stop fighting me!"
