Cheers

Sorry, I can't help with chords, but since it seems we've never had the lyrics posted here at Mudcat before, I thought it was a good idea to have the lyrics. This is a damn good song. I transcribed it from Spotify:

ST PATRICK'S NIGHT IN SAN FERNANDO
As sung by Christy Moore on "The Box Set: 1964-2004"

I'm so happy now St. Patrick's Day is over,
And all the paper hats are thrown away,
And all the plastic Paddies are gone back into the clover,
But I know they'll return another day.
I know they'll return another day.

I bought a ticket to a dance in San Fernando.
I watched the happy faces turnin' gray,
Growin' weary of the folkies, beards, and banjos
Who refuse to please the people when they play,
Too proud to please the people when they play.

Long ago I was sittin' in the corner.
I saw a man sit awkwardly and shy,
Afraid to even open up his collar,
Though his voice soared like a swallow in the sky.
Though his voice soared like a swallow in the sky.

At the grand St. Patrick's dance in San Fernando,
There was dignitaries there of every kind,
And I heard the proceeds went to purchase ammo,
So I got drunk and had a damn good time.
I got drunk and had a damn good time.

Well, I haven't yet decided who I'll marry,
Or if anyone would marry me at all,
But if we do, we'll go to San Fernando.
Myself and herself we'll have a ball.
Myself and herself we'll have a ball.

I saw the writing credit attributed to Colm Gallagher while wandering around the web.

I think this song sets a record for how much sneering and then whinging one can do in a single tune. I'm not surprised it's been forgotten.

Our crowd doesn't consist of plastic paddies either. When we want to celebrate, we share a dinner then we get out our instruments and play good Irish tunes. Get it? Instead of wasting our efforts sneering in rhythm and rhyme, we make music and enjoy each other's company.

Oh yawn, someones getting a bit defensive, its actual sarcastic undertones highlight the double standards of the image/stereotypes created within the commercialized world. Hence the stereotype of what you believe to be Irish music and the impression you have of people of all nations that is thrust upon you by media and government. Who told u you're allowed to muck about playing music and calling it 'Irish'. If you don't know Christy Moore, and his level of sarcasm, then you indeed are the focus of this song, and a plastic paddy. Hilarious.

Fortunately for me, I live in the free world and don't have to ask anybody's permission to play PD music.

As for plastic paddies - they're young, they're silly, they're having fun. Get over it.

Well the perception of freedom anyway..., get ur facts right, ur free to use your assumed heritage in the name of freedom yes, personally I like to don feathers and donindian style dance around the campfire but that's just freedom for ye, just don't make it look shit by playing it craply and not knowing what you're on about in regards to only the greatest Irish musician ever.

Great song, just taking it the wrong way, the second verse and others have no reference to anything Irish it's about stereotypes,

Is it stereotypical to ask if your American based on the assumption pertaining to your right to have other people's music?
