London house sessions email list

I think this is something that is useful and a helpful stepping stone into session playing, without some of the hassle that goes with turning up to a strange pub session. The idea is that it can be smaller groups of players of roughly equal abilities who can maybe agree common tunes/styles beforehand and so on and so forth. I don't want to impose a particular sort of structure on how it's meant to work....I'd rather stand back and let order emerge from the chaos!

The group page (with some more commentary) can be found at

or you can subscribe directly by emailing lbihs+subscribe@googlegroups.com

I'd be interested in any thoughts/comments. In particular, I'd appreciate any suggestions of other venues to publicise this list!

I'm not in London (now) but I think the idea might be a good one. With the usual reservations about inviting strangers into your home.

When we were starting to go to sessions we had a family tune night (daughter, other daughter's MIL and her daughter). We learnt tunes together. After a while we found that our tune lists diverged (due to unequal talents and amounts of practise) and we went to sessions instead, but it was a good start.

Lucky you, Mo!

Yes, I recognise there's a degree of trust involved but then again, you can get mugged on your way home from the pub. And of course, once it's up and running people will have a better idea of who is who.

I've been involved with beginner's and slow sessions before and experienced a similar phenomenon you describe - they all get better as a group and then suddenly there's no room for beginners any more! Hopefully something more fluid will help prevent that.
