04 Nov 99 - 09:55 AM (#131663) Subject: Chat Etiquette ??? From: GutBucketeer I'm new at this chatty, quick repartee via the keyboard, oh my god what should I say, stuff. I've joined the Mudcat Chat a couple of times and alway's feel that I've just entered a dinner party. I'm new and not sure I'm supposed to be there because a friend said come on it will be a great time, and he hasn't showed up yet. The conversation stops and all heads turn towards me..... How do you enter the Chat room? Are there common rules of courtesy regarding starting new topics, or listening to old topics? How do you know what's been going on before? Can you sit and just "listen in"? I'm from Texas (Now in DC) and speak after I've thought a bit (My wife just says I'm slow). This habit transfers to my keyboarding. In the chat room is it ok to respond to something that flew by a couple of minutes before after the conversation as careened off in a new direction? Is it rude to carry on multiple conversations/threads at the same time? Dazed and confused... JAB |

Slow keyboarders are at a distinct dis-advantage, however, due to the nature of the beast. If you are responding to a specific comment, most people would probably preface their response with the name of the person who made the comment... it CAN be very confusing. I had to leave the console for a minute last night, and you had "left the room" before I had a chance to say much to you...(which is just as well as I have been running on minus-sleep--but...) So try again some time, wednesday nights between 7:00 and roughly 11:00-ish MudCat time are probably the most likely times to find someone there, but Thursdays have been pretty active as well lately. on the hour is your best bet. You have to be java capable and enabled and version 4.x of browser....actually the newer your browser, probably the likelier you are of being able to use the chat room. login with mudcat name and password. |

From: Bugsy JAB I know exactly where you are coming from and feel very much the same with both chat sessions and also posting comments on these threads, but definitely more so with the Chat rooms. I agree with MMario's comments over the chat room and it is a very friendly place to everybody once you get used to it. The first couple of times I tried it, I was completely lost but it does get easier after a while. Multiple conversations do add to the confusion but after a while, you will find yourself joining in more than one conversation at the same time. Also, don't feel that you have to follow the existing conversations, you could always introduce a new topic... Jon |

However, I definitely sound better in the bathtub, than in the pub! Was I correct in remembering a version of Mingulay Boat song that was yours. Otherwise my young/old age (44) is showing.
