Copyright info on old songs

My friend Rainbowolf is sorting stuff to go on her next CD and would very much like to use songs from both sides of the Pond.

The UK/Irish ones are all ones which are older than the hills and I would have thought belonged to that strange fella 'Trad'. How can she check on any copyright for them? Is a list kept somewhere?

I know that any 're-worked and recorded' ones are copyrighted - but what about the originals?

Yes, it is THAT Rainbowolf :-)

Are you in the UK? If so, you need to apply for a licence to manufacture from MCPS. If they are all Trad, there will be nothing to pay. If some are in copyright, MCPS hold the database of who owns such rights, and will issue an invoice for the royalties that are payable.
In the USA there is a similar system I think. US Mudcat friends will elucidate no doubt.

Thanks Graham. Thought it worked something like that. Rainbow has managed to find copyrights on some of the 'reworks' but not on the original stuff.

Any more - especially from the UK?
