Just back from ARRAN ... yes thats the place with no electricity!!
despite that we managed to get to two very good if cold venues for some great music.
First was THE KILDONAN HOTEL in Kildonan this is on a Saturday night a great mixture of music from trad folk to jazz and beyond complete with two harpists.

The EDEN BAR in Whitting Bay was the choice for Sunday afternoon. Supposedly 2.00 til 5.0 but we left at 7.00pm and it was stil going strong.

Got a warm reception in both and would have been warmer had their been any elecricity !!!! Or Fires . Managed to warm up over the odd candle.

Pure acoustic! Perhaps you should have attached any fiddlers' bowing arms to a generator! Seriously though, I think those of us in our cosy homes on the mainland admire the spirit of those on Arran and Kintyre and in Dumfries and Galloway.

Michtie me, JHW!!
Arran (Scotland in Miniature) where you can get wonderful cheese, mustard, soaps and other scented things, climb Goat Fell, visit Brodick Castle, and they also have a distillery at Lochranza. There are some shops that sell nice woollies but NOT ARAN jumpers.

My Arran session memories go back to the early 60's with people like Robin Hall, Jimmie McGregor, Fionna Duncan, Eleanor Leith, and locals Willie Cook,Forest Auld and the Gill brothers at their disused church gallery and workshop. We would also play on the beach at Lamlash and a pub bar thre name of which I forget and also at The Shielin where we sometimes played for a meal. Lots of good memories from two summers there. Are Willie Cook and Forest Auld still involved?

My wife and I had a really enjoyable time at the Eden/Shurig bar last year. I played in a lovely session with harpists and fiddlers and a pipe player and there is a lovely soul called Nickey who we played with who has got a lovely voice and was just bags of fun to sing and play with.

Very happy memories.

These were recorded just outside the Eden on a rather warmer day as I had my zoom recorder in my guitar case as it happened just trying out songs. But for a first time through and noone remembering the words it still makes me smile - Case of You.and Once I had a Sweetheart

No pretensions to it being anything polished but if you had the same experience you will have had a lot of fun as it is a lovely session :)

Everytime I visit Arran I join with pleasure the sessions at Eden Lodge on Sunday afternoon and at the Ormidale Hotel on Sunday evening. Although I'm from The Netherlands I feel realy at home during the session due to the very warm en open atmosphere.
Nice music, nice people, very good musicians!

Henk

This is maybe a good time to mention the Arran folk festival, 6-9 June.
