14 Apr 13 - 10:57 PM (#3503502) Subject: BS: Another Boring Best-of List From: JohnInKansas Since many, if not most, recent threads intended to expand our intellectual horizons seem to have been rehashing of old topics of interest only to the confused and befuddled, it seems appropriate that I should join the crowd with a link to an article that appeared recently in which "a panel of experts" from MSN Entertainment have listed their "one hundred favorite movies." By avoiding an attempt to pick just one or two "best" movies they've come up with a list that may be reasonably acceptable for a larger number of people than is usual for shorter lists (they call them "more selective"?) that are seen more often, and might give a better idea of what's been "representative" of a broader spectrum of US tastes, especially for those elsewhere in the (real?) world. We found 31 titles in the list that we have, mostly by accident, in our DVD The list also suggested about 13 we recognized and don't have that might be worth watching for in the "really cheap" bargain bins, with another 4 or so we might consider "if we're in the right/wrong mood and they're begging for someone to help get rid of them. A little over half (51) on the list were mostly recognizable, but in the WDGAS category and we'd probably tip them a dime or so to NOT try to get us to take one home, not because they're bad but because the just don't interest us in any particular way. The movies in the list are apparently US releases only, so those who live where better ones can be found should not take offense at omissions. The link below is to the list, but each title in their list is a link to a sample picture and some comment about the movie. All of the linked picture/comment pages have links back to the list. It reminded me of a few that I would like to see again, but I also noticed the absence of foreign films. "Rashomon" was one that immediately came to mind. It is one that should be seen by every one who is wary of "witness" testimony. I have the British TV "Secret Garden" on VHS (which I had copied to DVD); I think it is far superior to the movie version. I believe the DVD of the British one is available now. I could list a number of films that I believe should be on any list of "Bests," but everyone has their favorites. "The Great Dictator" ccomes to mind, but I can understand why critics might be wary of it. "Showboat" is another that I thought was important, as well as the Japanese original on which "Seven Samurai" was based. |

Seven Samurai!!! AWESOME!!!!! I've seen all but four or five and they were all old B&W films. the only ones I regret seeing were Nashville, Moulin Rouge, Grease and Dirty Dancing. |

A musical, but one of the best. I would also list a few of the Chinese films directed by Zhang Yimou. There is a list of the "Top 100 Japanese films." 15 Apr 13 - 12:15 PM (#3503750) Subject: RE: BS: Another Boring Best-of List From: Q (Frank Staplin) Japanese films: "Tampopo" a romp about the "perfect" noodle, gourmet cooking, and Japanese lifestyle that kept me smiling and watching for the little cameos and in-jokes- the one with the head of Maxims and the lesson on how to eat noodles is memorable. Also a good parody of a John Wayne type character. "The Burmese Harp" is a film about Japanese soldiers on the run near the end of WW2, and one man's solution. "Tokyo Story." There are many good films on the list, and some that will not be available with English subtitles and will be hard to comprehend. Stick to those with subtitles. |

It's a sad case of species prejudice. I looked through the list. I've seen about 2/3 of those movies. A fair number of them are sort of in general categories that I normally don't bother with, which is probably why I never saw them. I may have missed some good ones because of that. For instance, I always assumed that "Dirty Dancing" was a film I would have absolutely no interest in, so I've never seen even a preview of it. As for "Goodfellas"...I have seen it, but I detested it. Not that the acting wasn't good. It was. And the script was good. Definitely a well made movie. However, I just don't need a vision of that kind of moronic deadend depravity floating around in my head. Yuck. I was sorry I'd seen it after I did. Miller's Crossing, on the other hand, I really liked. The extreme violence was there, same as in Goodfellas, but the mood was different. Goodfellas depressed me. Miller's Crossing entertained me. |
