40 years ago (!) (around 1973) we went to a Fairport concert at Hull University and the local support group sang their own song with the chorus line

"It was Saturday Morning in Beverley Market ain't you going my way
Saturday Morning on a Beverely Market day."

it began with a line that ended "It was a perfectly lovely day."

Well that damn tune still won't go away and I would love to have the words to sing it to and to give credit to the writer.

Any clues would be much appreciated.

Very interesting Fringe programme.

Basicly three venues, the Tiger is a musos preserve, the Sun is usually a noisy free for all, and Hodgesons is miles from anywhere!!

Best of luck with it!!!!!!!

GUEST GUEST

The group was probably Salamander
Sam Ellis wrote the song and Salamander were Sam, Mike Jones, Gillie Jones and Paul Tracey.

The song
Well I got out of bed I found the sun in my eyes
It was a perfectly lovely day
So I ran down the roadway
I knocked on your door
I said it's time you were up and away

Cos it's Saturday morning and it's Beverley Market
Arn't you coming my way
Saturday morning on a Beverley Market day

Well the sun sat down on the Minster towers
Watching people moving around
We walked along just enjoying the fun
And it was all for thrrepence a pound

cos it's...

Well the sun followed us all around the town
And we slipped into Nellie's by chance
We had a few pints of our favourite brew
Then we asked little Nellie to dance

cos it's....

Don't know what happened to the members of Salamander

Is there any online info about music workshops etc at Beverley folk festival? In previous years this info only seems to have been available in their printed programme, which I don't want to buy just for this. it would also be nice to know in advance so I know which instruments to take!

In previous years single event/camping tickets have been available but this year I Have been told this is not the case and that I would have to pay £100+ to park me van and sing in the pubs. Does anyone know different? However the booking office did tell me they think there may be a campsite near the town but they didn't know where and they didn't have a phone number. Not a lot of help are they? Can anyone help?

The Sun is very close to the west end of Beverley Minster which is very difficult to miss. Standing at the door of the Sun turn left for Hodgsons, beyond the level crossing. For the Tiger turn right and go down Minster Moorgate which runs parallel to the Minster and then turn left when that street ends.

Beverley Minster is well worth a look if you are passing. Hope you enjoy your visit.

Hope for better advertising of the Fringe events at the festival itself next year. Did the distance from the main site harm it do you think?

From: GUEST,Jane of 'ull

Enjoyed the McGarry Nelson set at Minster Bar (what we caught of it)however it was not that well signposted, and not being familiar with the racecouse I asked a steward who just vaguely said 'it's over there'. Over where exactly?? Anyway we found it but if she'd just said 'its near the wooden horse' we'd have found it sooner!

I don't think the Fringe was harmed being further away from the main site, esp as there was a shuttle bus on. I actually preferred the new site, it's got more of a 'festival feel'. I never liked the leisure centre as a venue.

I got across on Sunday afternoon and went to the Sun and Hodgsons. Although enjoyable, I would say that both venues were much quieter than during previous festivals.

Don't know if its true but someone in The Sun told me that they were charging for the shuttle bus. If true, that could have been off-putting for some.

Subject: RE: The Beverley Folk Festival-fringe program
From: nboldock

I thought the £1 for the shuttle was fine to be honest, what's a quid these days? If anything though they could have been a little more frequent than they were. One an hour on a Saturday afternoon seems nowhere near enough to me and the walk from town to the racecourse is not a two minute job by any means, so a few more buses might be a good idea next year.

I also preferred the new venue, and was similarly not really a big fan of the leisure centre, I'd echo Jane of 'Ull's comments entirely - definitely more "festivally".

The Minster Bar signposting was daft though and if we hadn't been specifically looking for it I doubt we would have walked down there to the end of the course where it was hiding.

The fringe venues seemed as busy as ever on Saturday, perhaps more so than last year by my reckoning.

Tiger, Sun and Oddies were all highly enjoyable. We didn't make it to Hodgsons this year. We didn't do any of the ticketed festival events this year either.

On the whole it was a cracking visit on Saturday and just a shame we couldn't really make it back on Sunday for more of the same.

Nick.

Nice to hear everyone again at the 'Fringe'. Not as busy as in previous years but it was nice to get into the pubs and be heard. Its a long way out of town to the Festival and the camping but with a bit of nurturing I'm sure the 'Fringe' will survive. If you would like us to help out with sessions next time please get in touch at www.alteregocb.net or olga.j18@btinternet.com. For those who only want to do the fringe who are members of the Camping and Caravanning Club there has been for years and will certainly be there next year a 'members only' rally at Willow Lane. There is also a 5 van site up there but if you want to use it you will need to book early as it is only a 5 van site! Hope to see you all next year if we don't catch up with you somewhere before then.

If the festival organisers considered the fringe to be a part of the festival {which they don't}they would have put signs up for the Minster Bar, but they didn't. Instead Mick and Brian had to do it themselves on the spur of the moment.Another indication of their attitude towards the fringe was the buses. They made several stops {including outside the Tiger}on the way up to the racecourse but instead of taking the same route back returned directly to the bus station.
Anyhow enough negativity. I had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed it. Well done to all those who made it happen.
