Hi Mudcatters, I'm looking for any and all Cyril Davies memories, etc. as I'm working on a Cyril Davies bio for publication. Please contact me through 'the' Cyril website (attn: Todd). Cheers!

I don't have any Cyril memories other than the old records I played but best of luck with the biography, I'll look forward to reading it. And nice website by the way!

Is there any truth in the persistent rumours of Cyril Davies' fling with a very very famous person indeed?

Greg, I'm honestly unaware of any such rumour. I've done a great deal of digging over the years and the famous person thing has never been broached. You can reach me through the website if you'd like (?).

David E, thanks for the kind words; would like to have it out this year, next year at the latest.

Never heard that rumour during the time I knew him. Perhaps there is some confusion here. Some time after Cyril's death his wife did marry a Knight.

Chas McDevitt told me that he based his skiffle group's version of House of the Rising Sun on Cyril's singing. Cyril sang it as a fast tempo song. Chas said he now realized that he was singing Lead Belly's version, "In New Orleans."

Not much about Cyril really, but it was an interesting anecdote.

I don't think he was very popular with Lord Sutch after his Savages left to join the All Stars. I saw Cyril Davies once at the Marquee in Oxford Street, I gather he was a gold medal control freak!

Hoot: We were in touch with Frank Weston a few times over the years but he was unable to find the time to contribute; is there a chance you could contact me?

Chas has been a great help from day one. He shared the New Orleans story story with us as well; Cyril was a Lead Belly fanatic and played a huge repertoire of LB's tunes.

Bonzo3legs: for good or bad, Cyril was an uncompromising band leader - for sure. Did you happen to enjoy the Marquee show?

Yes it was excellent, Funnily enough I had seen most of the All Stars only 2 or 3 weeks before dressed in leopard skins as the Savages!

You caught one of the early shows! Cyril thought he was going to have Jimmy Page on guitar but that didn't work out. Bernie Watson (guitar) and Ricky (Fenson) Brown (bass) are still around but Carlo Little and Nicky Hopkins have passed on...all great talents; they were very young at the time.

I remember that Carlo Little was a very loud drummer indeed when playing in Lord Sutch's Savages, but not so in the All Stars. I still have my copy of Country Line Special somewhere.

Yes, Carlo was a powerhouse drummer. I hope you can dig that old single out and give it a spin, it's a great one! Here's a link to Carlo's version of the All Stars with Rick Brown on bass and Art Wood on vocals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ1g6qjhzGs
