Chord Req: Fareweel Regality by Terry Conway

A lovely song, which I was introduced to by The Unthanks. Does anyone know the chords?

There's another version on YouTube, but I'm not comfortable with the chords shown.

TIA,
Peter

I found a version with chords. Was it this one?

I would find those chords uncomfortable too. Too many C's, which I find hard, and a few F's, which I find impossible. The song is in the key of C there, and the first chord is a C chord. If you haven't done it already, write down the first verse and the chords that threelegoman uses with it.

Now, if you want to sing it higher, try the key of D, so your first chord is a D chord. If you want go lower, use the key of E and an E chord.

Here's a site that shows how to make a device which transposes the chords for you. For example, to play in D, line up C and D and it will tell you what the other chords should be.

Thanks for the reply. It's not the chord playability or the key which I find "uncomfortable" (poor choice of words on my part, sorry) - it's the chord choices. I dunno, do I hear a minor in there?

I really hope someone has a better (more accurate?) version.
TIA,
Peter

Try an Am as your second chord, on that high note. The minors that 'normally' go with C are Am, Dm and Em. (all white notes). Try them out.

(I say 'normally' to try to fend off jaaz and blues pundits who will pop in to say "How bout B-flat7sus4th? I use it all the time.")

Me, when I play a traditional tune I might use a major chord in a certain place one time, then change to a minor on the repeat. I might use the major in one verse, then the minor in another verse. Of course, in session playing that could get a little complicated.

This is a nice song. As an American, I thought it would be a political song against monarchies, but then I discovered that Regality and Liberty are neighborhoods in old cities. Thanks for brining it to our attention.

Not quite wrong about "sus4", leeneia. The accompaniment is in a kind of folk-revival-drone style, not absolutely chord-oriented, in order to sound vaguely (= fakedly) archaic. If someone wants to copy that style, chord symbols are not sufficient. This applies both to the link given in the OP and in the Unthanks' version, although the harmonies are quite different.

Just for anyone who might be interested, there's another thread on this song here, though it's more about words than chords:

Why not ask him directly?

As well as turning out a lot of excellent songs, he's a proper nice chap to boot.

Why should borborygmus try various chords himself? Because being able to hear the structure of song and work out the chords does the following:

1. Enhances self-esteem

2. Increases guitar-playing pleasure

3. Serves as a chick magnet.

Breaking news! I just tiled that video and Noteworthy Composer, and I've made a MIDI file fo the melody. That song is being played in the key of E. Maybe there's a capo at work, so that the finger positions are for C, but that melody is in E.

So if you pick up your ax, play a C, and it just doesn't sound right, that's why.

It's a beautiful and interesting melody. Thanks for bringing it up, borborygmus.

Thanks for the inputs. Throwing the Am in does help. I did e-mail Terry a while back to ask for his version, and got no response.

Good. I'm glad you like the Am.

Terry is currently pretty unwell (info via a mutual friend on Facebook) and is or has been in hospital. Best wishes to him for a speedy recovery.

Roy Bailey has also done this song, so you might get the info from him.
