HI all,

Just to let you know we have a brilliant gig coming up in Hull on June 12th at the Adelphi club with DAVID ROVICS supported by McGarry Nelson (at least one of whom is something of a regular on this board) and the poet Jim Higo...

Here's the (admittedly quite lengthy) blurb for the gig - hope to see some of you down there!

Facebook event here - please spread the word - http://www.facebook.com/events/195841357230556/

[Description]

"THE SPIRIT OF '13"

We are equally delighted, and very proud, to welcome back the brilliant American songwriter and activist David Rovics (all the way from Portland, Oregon), making a return to the Adelphi for the first time since a triumphant near-sellout gig two years ago. David's 2013 World Tour takes him across the UK and Ireland, Germany, Holland and Scandinavia, before he sets sail for Japan, Australia and New Zealand… so make no mistake, we are privileged indeed to have secured this prestigious gig…

David's songs lie firmly in the protest tradition, and his relevance in these times of austerity is even greater than ever. Often compared to the likes of the legendary Phil Ochs and Pete Seeger, David is a consummate musician and performer and is guaranteed to raise the roof and rouse the rabble. His songs speak for those who do not have a voice, not just in the West but across the world. He doesn't just sing about revolution – he means it. Miss this at your peril.

McGarry Nelson are singer/guitarist Mick McGarry (also known locally as frontman of The Hillbilly Troupe) and multi-instrumentalist Brian Nelson, two longstanding stalwarts of the Yorkshire folk scene. Their new "Flowers On The Water" project charts the history of Hull's trawler industry, not just the trawler men themselves but also their communities, families and loved ones. It is a musical document of Hull's proud working class heritage. Expect to hear original songs taken from the project (shortly to be released on CD) and perhaps some other treats besides…

Opening the show will be Hull-born comedian and poet Jim Higo, now a veteran of two Edinburgh Fringe festivals, most recently in 2013 with his one-man show "That's Not How You Spell Pedantic". Jim's shows always delight with his edgy, acerbic wit and intelligent wordplay. Don't expect him to hold back… after all, he's got the "Born-On-A-Council-Estate-Living-On-The-Avenues Blues"…

This event is not just a gig. In this time of unrest, of government clampdowns on the poor and vulnerable, of government by the rich for the rich, when the weakest in society are being put to the sword by the privileged few, now more than ever is it vital that we remember that we are the majority and we have a voice. These performers, in their own unique ways, all represent parts of that voice. Come and join us.

Entry is £10 on the door – if you miss it, you miss out! (All proceeds go to the venue and the performers).

"If the great Phil Ochs were to come back from the dead tonight he'd probably be hailed as the new David Rovics" – Andy Kershaw, BBC Radio.
