Adobe Systems said upgrades for its flagship software package, which includes Photoshop, Illustrator and Flash, would be available only through online subscriptions, effective immediately. Adobe is the latest traditional software company to make a big bet on the cloud-based subscription model pioneered by companies such as Salesforce.com, NetSuite and Google. Subscription models bring in less money upfront as payment is spread over the entire period of use unlike traditional packaged software, but typically ensure more predictable recurring revenue. Upgrades will be available only through online subscriptions from June 17, a company executive said on Monday at an annual conference, where Adobe showcases its latest products. "Hundred percent of what we do moving forward will be in Creative Cloud, there will be no more Creative Suite, there will be no new version of Creative Suite," said Scott Morris, senior marketing director of Creative Cloud. Creative Suite 6, launched in June 2011, combines software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Flash and Dreamweaver that are used by professional designers. Creative Cloud helps customers access the Creative Suite software package through online subscriptions. Customers can buy a Creative Cloud subscription for $74.99 on a monthly basis and $49.99 per month for an annual subscription. The Creative Suite 6 Master Collection, which includes all Creative Suite tools, is priced at $2,599, an amount that could buy more than four years worth of Creative Cloud annual subscriptions. "This is a shift that we've been looking at for quite some time," David Wadhwani, Senior Vice President, Digital Media, told Reuters in an interview. "We plan to continue to support and sell Creative Suite 6 and customers can continue to purchase that for the foreseeable future," he said. While the existing design programs will still be sold for a license fee, which customers buy once and can use for years without making extra payments, those software won't get the newer functionalities, Adobe executives said. Given what they've done to a couple of their programs, it might be an advantage NOT TO GET any updates, but that's probably sort of a personal thing. We do have a few people who have indicated they use some rather dated PS versions. But I get the academic version, still plenty pricey, at less than $600 and I use it for a couple of years before upgrading. I'm just now at the point when I need to upgrade. Must decide very soon! 07 May 13 - 01:32 AM (#3512448) Subject: RE: Tech: Adobe Photoshop Alert From: JohnInKansas Stilly - I can't tell from the news quote whether the one guy is saying Creative Suite goes away in the FRP package or whether the other guy is saying it will still be around, or whether "Creative Suite 6 Master Collection" that some other guy talks about is the same as the "Creative Suite 6" that the other guy says will go away but that another guy says will still be available. It does appear you'll still be able to buy Photoshop as a standalone FRP, but the current version might be the last one you'll ever get --- or maybe they mean something else. I wonder if Irfanview is still up to date.(?) Since we're a nonprofit, I got it at techsoup.org for a $150. Our graphic artist is thrilled with it. It sure was a heck of a download, but I got it up and working. It took me a lot longer with Microsoft Office today, because their volume licensing procedures are quite complicated. -Joe- |

By the time I got through about 9 levels of "restrictions in *** included by citation" and hit around 900 pages of fine print I got so scared by all the things I couldn't do with the program I dumped the whole thing and purged my computer. (Tried to get my regular shaman to exorcise residual demons, but he was doin' a sweat lodge that weekend. He did send me a turkey feather and said "pretend it's off an eagle and wave it around and you'll be okay.") Probably won't ever try that again - although I still skim the first couple of pages on most of 'em. John |

It lacks a few of the more esoteric Photoshop tools, but is definitely a professional grade graphics app. Available for Windows and Linux. GIMP website I've been using it for years for professional graphics work and photo editing. For vector drawing, there is Inkscape. Another FREE application. Again, easily up to coping with all of my professional requirements. Works on Windows and Linux. Inkscape website I do still sometimes use Adobe's products in the office, but only because my employer has them installed on the machines there. Most of the time I just fire up my personal laptop and work on that, leaving the desk PCs turned off. These alternatives may not suit everyone, but I'm a pro user and they are enough for me. Might save some of you a few $/£... |

My university is way too large to be eligible, but a lot of smaller schools are, along with non-profits that fall within size guidelines. That $150 Adobe suite is a considerable savings, though it is difficult to compare current prices because of this changeover that John has brought to our attention. But the boxed sets are easily around $1000 or more; educational discounts bring it down around $350. SRS |

I, for just one, have called for all my Facebook friends to share this info about Adobe and others and to boycott any software comapany that says "You can pay $X and it's good for one year." THAT means that everything you do with it can only be used for one year and then you lose the works, access to YOUR OWN creations included... that ain't right. Now... take that to next level... the "cloud" or "sky". You can buy M$ Office Home and Student, one time cash outlay, one PC BUT it's not on YOUR PC... it's in the sky... and THEY own the sky. When they decide you have to pay them more money or when someone decides to shut down your internet if you, the people, get too uppity (Syria???), this type of "marketing" renders you helpless. Boycott. Resistance is NOT futile. I have turned all my automatic updates off. I will decide what and who has anything to do with my PC and OUR internut. |

No updates, no security issues, no slowing down after every OS update. I find Photshop7 richer than I can use, Premiere more than sufficient. After effect has two features I want, anti-shake and following an on-screen feature. Acrobat reader and Quicktime seem to want updates daily - and I ask myself, how reliable are they or is it just a case of snooping on dodgy Adobe software. tick all of the above. |

I would NEVER do such an insane thing with anything other than what I would not care care to share the rest of the earth... a song, a poem, a raunchy joke would never get to the sky (Homeland Security, CSIS, M$, HP... can access them but I hope their security keeps it out of the hands of "the petty criminals", pun and innuendo DEFINITELY intended). I would use it for some files I wished to work on from a friends PC if I couldn't take mine on a trip or have enough space to pack a jump drive. >;-) But, I wasn't addressing that. I was addressing the fact that every time I start my PC and wish to use MY pAID FOR MS Office, I have to fly up into the sky and get it down. THEY control that access. And you can also bet $ to donuts that when the new Windows FU operating system comes out, my M$ Office Home & Student Skydrive edition will not be very supportive. Okay, I'll admit the "not be very supportive" pun don't meet even yer minimum Sev Standard. |

I always take photos in raw format which as you know is just a set of instructions, which allows maximum processing in CS6 before saving to jpg. |

Gimp and Libre Office are both more than enough for most people's needs and both free to download. The same is true for audio and video editing applications. Most people are aware of Audacity. For video, there is Avidemux. Originally a Linux App, it is available for both PC & Mac. Instead of whingeing, rid yourself of software that tells you what to do and controls how you do it. Yes, there'll be a learning curve and no, it won't be perfect, nothing ever is but most creators of open source software are more responsive to comments & suggestions than most commercial software vendors. |
