Obit: olddudes Mom

Mom lost her battle with cancer. Instead of sadness I rejoice in her life. She was a woman of great faith with a wonderful sense of humor. No matter how dark the times were, she could make us all laugh.

thanks mom, you were the best

If she was anything like my Mom, dude, you got one helluva high standard to live up to.

I really do share your pain, and let me know if I can do anything.

She loved to paint, no pictures, walls ceilings, antique furniture (much to my chagrin) anything. I was afraid to fall asleep as I may wake up painted. Painted her 200 year old antique china cabinet because she was tired of looking at the wood LOL.

I have visions now that she is in heaven painting God's antiques. I can hear him ... no no don't paint my Chippendale high boy

One time she painted her car. No kidding. She had this white car and said it showed the dirt so she hand painted it this grungy blue color with a brush.   She said there, it looks much better don't you think ...
funnies woman alive. I could not stop laughing. I said what posses you to paint everything .. she said, I like to paint

Ah Dan I am sure I got the faint whiff of fresh paint on the wind when I stepped out the door this morning looks like she has started already. If you start seeing pink forget-me-nots and other flowers of strange and wonderful hues you will know that the Guid Man has taken drastic action to protect his antiques. Thinking of you and yours

Well the one time I was in HS, she bent out her front bumper on the 65 Pontiac trying to back up and caught it on a fire hydrant. I said mom that bumper is sticking out we have to get it fixed, she said for sure. So she drives down across the RR tracks, goes to one of the old RR telegraph poles, lines up and bam .. runs into the pole. The bumper goes back in place. She said since I lost your dad , I have to figure out how to fix stuff myself

forgot to tell you, one day she painted her washer and dryer and our claw foot tub bright yellow. You see with mom color didn't matter. God forbid any paint should remain in the can ... I came home from HS and said what is this, she goes doesn't it look great. I said mom that is wall paint what do you think is going to happen when water is put in the tub for a bath.   I get Oh is there a difference in paint? I guess I will have to repaint them. I am waiting for my grass to turn white then I will know God gave her a project

may have told you before, one time I dyed her little white poodle dog green for St. Pats day. I used green food coloring ... boy was pissed, then she said, it is kinda pretty however. The woman would cover the earth if God lets her. She must have been an expressionist in a past life. Loved to paint.   I bought her a watetcolor set once for xmas. I figured it would be easier then her painting 200 year old antiques. she did make some cool grandma moses type of art

One time about a year after my dad was killed, we all wanted to go swimming really bad. So mom took us and our friends to the swimming hole that everyone went to. Now my mom was only in her early 40's and was a beautiful woman. Me I don't swim, I fish. so while my brother and sister and friends were swimming I was below the hole fly fishing (lots of great brook trout there). Anyway suddenly I see this women's swim top come floating down in the current. I cast my fly and reeled it in. Started to walk back up and from the bushes I hear. Dan Dan find my top, it broke. Dang I haven't worn this swimsuit since my honeymoon Dang . I tossed it over the bushes to her.

My friends my mom would have loved you all. And please she would be delighted that you are laughing at her antics. sometimes I think she did stuff just to make us laugh. It was important to her. I was told in no uncertain terms that no grief, just love and laughter because that is what she was all about.

My grandpa and I had massive vegetable gardens. My grandma loved flowers. Grandpa hated them because you can't eat them but he always made a beautiful flower garden for her. Well the apple didn't fall far from the tree. My mom's backyard vegetable garden went like this. A row of tomatoes, a row of flowers, a row of lettuce a row of flowers. I would say what kind of vegetable garden is that, she would say a pretty one. Then I would respond well at least ya didn't paint it

I knew she had to be extra special to turn out such a kind gentle-man for a son. What a wonderful childhood yours must of been. My mom loved flowers a lot, too. My sis, long-ago Mudcatter "bet" wrote about mom, her passing and flowers which Jeri turned into a song:

Song for My Mom

and, here's a note about IvanB performing it for us a few years ago: Clickety.

Dan... "I don't why I can't cry ... Just lost and empty .. I don't get it"

I think it's simple. You also said, "I miss you so but like you said no tears. We just remember I will see you again"

I think you are already seeing her again and I am sure she appreciates it. I know I certainly do because when you tell us these small snippets about her she comes to life in my mind and heart. Thank you, Dan, for sharing. And don't be concerned about the way you grieve. If tears flow, even when she said they shouldn't, it's okay. I am sure she would understand.

She loved music. She thought I was a great song writer. She was biased for sure. In HS I brought home (for myself) Bridge over Troubled waters the Album ... She stole it ... I bet she played that thing for 20 years. Love it .. Now my dad was all about "hillbilly" and "cowboy"
mom was more modern. I wanted to go to a "Vanilla Fudge" concert in Pittsburgh. She drove me and my friend Sam and went with us. She said those guys are good .. LOL what mom does that

Yea she wrote us all a letter, I read it today ... basically how much she loved us all and to take care of each other. To take care of others we encounter in life ... tore my heart out for sure but again I still can't cry ... I suspect when one hurts so bad, something inside just shuts down. I miss her. Cooking (I should say) burning was not one of her strong points. Good thing we didn't have a smoke detector back then. Nobody would have gotten any sleep.

So sorry for your loss, Dan. I lost my dad 6 years ago & it took about 3 years, till I stopped crying regularly. My mom passed, last October, after a painful time of aging & delusions. By the time she died, it seemed a blessing. I am confident that both are with the Lord & I'll see them, by & by. They were great parents & I feel blessed by the heritage they gave me. The main thing I'm noticing, these days, is that I can't ask questions of the previous generation & that I can't call Mom to chat. I miss that. Today, I am attending the memorial of a dear friend from church. She finally lost her 3 1/2 year battle with cancer, but she fought valiantly & lived her life till the end. I saw her, twice, in her last week & there was a peace about her. She was a faithful wife, mother, friend, church member. Her life was well-lived. May we all say the same! I'll think of you, today!

love,

Barbara

Yup, gnu. It does. olddude, glad the service went well. The one I attended was wonderful--completely planned by the departed & very meaningful. She lived well & fully!

Dan, we set out on a journey the day before you posted the word about your Mom, and just got home today. Our condolences, plus thanks for the belly laughs. Obviously the lady was "something else".

God bless you Dan,you've made us all laugh even in the saddest of circumstances!

Mom was so much fun. One other letter she wrote to us kids ended like this... "as a family we been through good times, bad times and everything else in between. We survived and got through it all, except this last time cause I am gone but no worries"

When you go, I will be waiting with your aunt and your dad sitting at the table drinking coffee and smoking cigs.. I know, but it makes no difference now if I want a cig"

She was something else.

From all you've shared with us, it sounds like she was indeed something else--something else that was wonderful.

Thanks for sharing the good memories with us. My thoughts are with you in coming to grips with what's happened and its consequences. She sounds like a wonderful lady.
