Review: Rick Fielding Strikes Again!

Your Mudcat Reporter: Since Rick is not exactly a publicity hound, Mudcatters should know that RF gave a terrific concert last night, courtesy of the Acoustic Harvest, at Birchcliff United Church in Toronto's East End, to launch his new album for Borealis records. The place was packed out -- and I mean packed out (half the staff spent the evening trying to find more seating for people) and Rick's co-conspirators, Greg Monk, Curly Boy Stubbs, Grit Laskin, and others hi and lo-jinked their way through the evening. Rick plugged Mudcat, and played "Catspaw's Rag" (we got to see Curly Boy playing the ukelele!!). Mudcatter Tony Burns and I chatted about trees and I got to meet Mudcatter Davey at last. Elegance and charm were provided as ever by the inestimable Duckboots. Mudcatter's night out!

Hey Peter, thanks for the report! I called Rick yesterday and wished him the best, but also told him he wouldn't need "luck"....he really is a tremendous musician, fine picker with a great voice. I got to here one he was working on over the phone and that sounded just great.

For those of you who have not heard or PURCHASED Rick's new album "This One's the Dreamer," you really need too. Not because you know Rick, or he's a 'Catter....no, you need to get it for the music. I don't find many albums anymore that are so well "rounded" as this one. If you don't know Rick and his tastes, likes, and influences, you will after listening to this CD. He "pays homage" so to speak, to the variety of musical styles that have influenced over the years and his selection of material couldn't be better. And if you don't find yourself "struttin" through the kitchen to "Gin Mill Synchopaters" or harmonizing to "Fa Sol La" then you can at least get a feeling for Rick through his own "City Boy's Dream." His rendition of "In My Life" is simply top notch...a Lennon/McCartney that everyone knows, but somehow its so much more powerful and meaningful from Rick.

Yeah, I know the guy's a friend of mine, but that ain't got squat to do with it. Buy this sucker and listen! Folk to Folk-Like at the best. Yeah, I know I ain't a critic either....but judge for yourself folks......as I'm sure you will.(:<))

I just got it in the mail Friday. It's absolutely splendid! Thanks Rick. I will play it over and over and over and over and ... well, you get the drift.

(Not to be grim or anything, but "In My Life" is one song I've told my kids I want played at my funeral when I croak, and this version will be the one I play for them so they see why I'm in love with this song. NOTE: I'm not planning on croaking anytime soon, not even feelin' puny, just thinking ahead. I plan to die in a fiery motorcycle accident when I'm 106, so I have LOTS of time...)

I think we may need to all go in the same flameout (cf. the earlier thread on Mudcat Retirement Homes -- hey, maybe a moto-death package at the end could draw a few more old folkies). We could get Rick to work on tooling up Gang of Twelve leather jackets and everything. (I took the bus home last night with a fan who was really only interested in Rick for his leather carvings. Mr. Renaissance or what?

could that be "toothing up the gang of twelve" at that time?

I suppose I'll be about 130 at that time and going out in a blaze of glory in the company of WyoWoman sounds pretty good to me...although I'd still rather go from exhaustion after a solid night of sex starting after the Mudstoc 2066 Sunday afternoon concert.

Oh, I forgot the mandatory thread content: I just bought Rick's CD after installing aol 4.0, a real dog of an ISP: the slowest browser on earth, lots of crashes, freezes, terminations of service. But I had to reinstall it because AOL made it so 3.0 could no longer access secure ordering facilities.

Bseed, thread creeping along:

AOL is under a lot of fire right now for allowing people to put things like "fag killer or hunt fags" for their hobbies on their personal pages, yet deleting gay related hobbies posted by gay members. Some AOL users have been denied access to gay political action sites on the web, by their AOL browser.

I've had several press releases emailed to me, including some boycotts planned and some protests already carried out. What they are lobbying for is making AOL stick to its Terms Of Service, for everyone, on a non-discriminatory basis. There are many, many people who support a boycott. I am not suggesting you do this, just wanted to let you know. If you are interested I would be happy to email you the info.

Creeping back into position.....sorry, Rick! I am finally going to be able to order this! Yippee!! Can't wait; from what I heard on M'Cat Radio, I know I will love it!

Curly Boy Stubbs here. I haven't had so much fun on stage in years and years. Rick...you're an outstanding performer and it was such a pleasure to share the stage with you last night. Congratulations on drawing the best turnout the Acoustic Harvest venue has ever had. You're the man!

Well, I think we can combine the best of several worlds and go out in a blaze of glory after sexual exhaustion at Mudstock 2054 while playing R.F.'s "In My Life" on our CD player, wearing our hand-tooled Gang of Whatever leather jackets as we gun the accelerators and fly off into the wild, blue yonder.

And Catspaw, I was thinking I'd be driving and we'd crash because my boyfriend (much younger, say 93-ish) distracted me by trying to feel me up as I was negotiating a curve...

Okay, you can drive. And although I'd be older,(say what, 'bout 112 or so?) I'd be happy to feel you up! 'Course let's see now, at 106 you'll be hangin' 'bout, uh,.....hmmm........I dunno WW. I don't want to burn my hands on the exhaust.

There's another reason for dumping America Off-Line, Kat. I've been planning for a long tome to change to IGC.net but the task of notifying everyone of my new email address has been a fine rationalization for inaction...

And Rick, I'm really looking forward to getting the CD--I have never been able to get Real Audio to open anything: it all comes through as text files.

Sheesh! Thank you. I'll grab this (slightly) embarrasing thread while it's up here, and say I had a wonderful time last night. One thing that stands out for me was that while we no-account pickers were doing are thing, the team of Lydia Bartkiew and Jason LaPrade gave us (and the audience) wonderful sound. There were a lot of instruments - ALL acoustic, on stage. Often a nightmare for sound people, but these two did a wonderful job. If anyone's touring through Ontario, ask for these folks. (I'll give you their e-mail).
I borrowed a page from the Washington folks book, and asked anyone who'd like, to hang around for a song circle afterward. Quite a few did, and I think they had a fine old time.

Spaw & WW, after you all, including PeterT, get done with that spectacle, I'll be there with the great HoHoHoAum (stolen from Peter on the Thought for the day thread) to make sure your immortal souls don't get thrown out with the ashes. Oh and won't it be fine, cause where I'll be, mine'll be sweet and perky, again, and all the boys will be wanting to cop a feel!

Bseed, from what I read about AOL, I think it would be well worth the effort.

Rick, sweetie, thanks for lending us the space in this thread. I AM going to get to hear you, live, someday!

Unfortunately we arrived late and only heard 6 or 7 songs, but what I heard was great. Grit Laskin was a welcome addition to the line up that I saw a few weeks ago in Greenbank. His concertina really filled out the sound. Rick is not only a fine player and singer, but he has a wonderful way of interacting with the other musicians and audience. I know that Rick has purposely cut back on performing live, but I would strongly suggest that if you are planning an event that you try to talk him into being there, he is a wonderful entertainer.

There are a few folk music heros that I regard with great respect for a number of reasons, and I'm proud to say that Rick is on my list - and so lucky that he lives in Toronto, and like others in this small music community we are lucky to know him as a friend. It was a fine and entertaining show (your right about the sound - those guys are really getting good at mixing acoustic music which is a fine art in itself). Rick is keenly aware of the community around him - doesn't put himself up on a pedestal like some other performers may do these days. He acknowledges and credits all his sources, fellow performers, and members of his community, making a concert feel like one big music party. He plays a lot of music that I like, with care and feel as well as great skill. I'm amazed that he will more often than not, pick out an incredibly difficult and challenging instrumental on guitar or banjo to perform, and not just settle for something easy. It is folks like Rick who make music interesting for all ears, and is an inspiration for many of us, continuing to be most important in passing this music along. Congatulations Rick- I'm gonna listen to your CD today. Good job Curly Boy! He had you workin there pretty good, but I could tell you were having a blast.

Aye, folks, Rick's album in wonderful. A heARTy vote here and now from one who has been listening to it for the last month or so. And it's always grand to hear Paul Mills (C.B.S.) doing his unique thing on the CD. Everyone is in top form.

Rick, Give my regards & salutations to Grit. His song about the fellow who is given 80 years (or so)---and how he uses his time---is a wonderful saga that is on a tape of favorites-----as is "One Summer Night In The City Of Light". Tell him I wish I'd had a chance to play one of his fine guitars. I've fond memories of him in Winnepeg and Hartford, CT

Curly Boy did a fine version of Stan Roger's "45 Years", which reminds me that somebody with more information should post a thread letting 'Catters know that there is a new Stan Rogers album, and where to get it.

I was going to start a thread about the concert, but I didn't get to my PC yesterday. Thanks to Peter T for getting this thread going.

As part of the Acoustic Harvest committee, I'd just like to add my thanks to Rick for putting on such a fine show, and to Curly Boy, Greg Monk, and Grit for their able backup. We were absolutely thrilled at the turnout for the concert, and, as mentioned, we were kept scrambling to find chairs for everyone, keep the coffee refilled, etc.

Acoustic Harvest are also pleased that we have such superb sound people as Jason and Lydia working with us. Every musician or group who plays our club speaks very highly about the quality of their sound work.

I can't add anything more to Arnie's praise for Rick's musicianship, he's summed it up perfectly, and I too have baeen a fan for many years.

The song circle at the end was a wonderful, warm and low key way to close out the evening.

Get the album folks.....

What makes the difference in their sound work? What's the distinction? And why is it so hard, particularly to get acoustic instruments' sound right?

We did a gig at a meeting of the national association of summer session executives (one of our members is a past president) and were greatly pleased by the fact that the hotel provided a great sound system with an engineer: it was a disaster. We spent a half hour or so with the engineer setting the balances of nine microphones, five vocal and four instrumental--and promised to make a tape for us. We thought while we were playing that we weren't getting a whole lot of attention, but--after all, we were just background music for a cocktail party so we didn't think too much of it, until we got the tape: It sounded as if there were microphones in the crowd--on the tape we were definitely background, deep background.

WW, I'm not a sound person or technician, and if Arnie is still reading this thread perhaps he can give a more complete explanation. Jason and Lydia are acoustic musicians, and they decided that if they were going to make a living at it they should get good equipment, so they invested a considerable sum to get a quality soundboard, good main and monitor speakers, and a number of the most highly recommended microphones for voice and instrument.(there are different mikes for different purposes)

Acoustic instruments have a particular warm presence which requires a certain type of microphone, plus proper equalization on the sound board to reproduce accurately. I was at a showcase concert put on by some friends at a local bar that specializes in rock groups. The person running (if that's the word) the sound board was accustomed to rock groups, and the acoustic trio sounded terrible, the voices were muddy and the instruments not properly balanced, individually or in relation to each other. It took nearly the entire first set before things began to improve.

On another occasion, my partner and I were performing at an outdoor benefit concert, and during our set-up I plugged my 12-string (a Laskin) into the sound system. It sounded terrible, producing an unbalanced and overly loud sound that I couldn't fix no matter how much I fiddled with the controls. I ended up unplugging it and playing into a mike, which was a considerable improvement. I haven't used it plugged in since then. Acoustic instruments with pickups don't sound the same as unamplified instruments.

Jason and Lydia, being performers themselves, develop a good rapport with the evening's entertainers and quickly understand the sound that entertainer is looking for. Then, during the actual performance, they listen closely and constantly adjust the eq, levels, balance, etc. as needed to take into consideration the changes in sound produced by different instruments, sound absorption caused by the size of crowd, and any other factors that may be interfering. In short, they don't just set the controls and leave it there, they work hard at maintaining the best sound possible, and they are very good at it.

That's a non-technical look at things, and I hope that helps somewhat...

Davey... (:>)
