16 May 13 - 09:26 PM (#3515991) Subject: Fahey Celebration in Takoma Park, 6/28 From: GUEST,Marc Minsker Well it's taken some time to come together, but the DC premiere of James Cullingham's excellent documentary IN SEARCH OF BLIND JOE DEATH will take place on 7pm on Friday, June 28, 2013 at the Takoma Park Community Center (7500 Maple Avenue, Takoma Park, 20912) WE ARE TAKOMA and the HOUSE OF MUSICAL TRADITIONS PRESENTS: A COMMUNITY CELEBRATION OF JOHN FAHEY Takoma Park's most famous son, guitarist John Fahey, will be celebrated with a new documentary from Tamarack Films, with a music performance by one of Fahey's label mates Max Ochs, and with a Q & A consisting of film director James Cullingham, flautist and Fahey friend Nancy Mclean, session engineer and musicologist Joe Bussard, and Fahey's boyhood friend Rob Gardner. This promises to be a very special evening and will certainly fill the 150 seat auditorium at the Community Center (as did my amateur 30 minute documentary that was the debut event in the beautiful auditorium). This screening of the film is open to the public with a suggested donation of $10. Advance passes available at House of Musical Traditions or Takoma Park Community Center (limit two passes per person). For holders of advance passes, the suggested donation of $10 will be collected at the door, on the day of show only. The records will be auctioned after the screening of the film and will probably sell for at least $1000 each. One of the two has John's handwriting of a street address on the back. As rare as it gets for Fahey collectors! Anyone know when the documentary will be available on DVD ??? There is a collection of 6-LPs issued by 4MENWITH BEARDS which has gotten some bad reviews - some discs off-center, and criticism of sound quality. Anyone have the set? Were the oc discs replaced? Is the version of BLIND JOE DEATH in that set the original, the revision, or different from either version? Thanks, Thomas. |

Yeah, I knew his record label was called Takoma, spelled with a K, but I figured he had just arbitrarily decided to change the spelling. |

First saw him at the Ash Grove (with his bourbon-liter of Pepsi). Last saw him at the Birchmere (Alexandria) in the late 80s. So at the Birchmere show, I talked to him off-stage and said "how can I get a guitar lesson with you"? Fahey replied - "I have an old girlfriend I'd like to meet up with - beautiful Linda Getchell. See if you can find her number in the Yellow Pages and I'll be glad to show you a few things". Needless to say, the joke was not wasted on me.
