MMm, I'm not unsympathetic to "Monsanto = Evil", but it is helpful to be presented with specific material rather than a list of random search results.

Check out Phil Chandler (Barefoot Bee Keeper) and Brigit Strawbridge, on their Facebook pages...

I've just been to see them both today..and Brigit has dedicated her life to saving The Bees and raising awareness of Monsanto and pesticides which contain Neonicotinoids...

Also, if Brigit is giving a talk down you way (and she goes all over the UK) then please go and see her for she's really wonderful and passionately enthusiastic over these little fellas which she loves dearly...

By the way, Phil questioned the video above, posted by ChanteyLass, saying the whole story sounded very odd and far from correct....

And..I wrote this yesterday, after getting home from the Stop Monsanto March here in Torquay. These marches happened all over the world yesterday with many city centres being brought to a standstill. Not a word has been reported,of course, but the photos are now out there on Facebook and word is spreading...

Here's what happened down here in Devon:

>>"All *THIS* For A Fucking Cabbage?" - FIRST, WE TAKE MONSANTO.........

Saturday, 25th may 2013, and finally people all around the world came to March Against Monsanto and ALL that this evil group of people stand for. From Amsterdam to Japan and all points inbetween, people came together to say "ENOUGH!"

Down in the West Country nearly 100 people gathered by the harbourside in Torquay, as warm. golden Sunshine turned the ocean into a Sea Of Diamonds, *finally* bringing Summer to a confused, depressed and dangerously-sick climate.

Nearly 100 people were gathered together, holding their banners, shouting their words out for others to hear, as they began to march towards the town centre....The puzzled faces of the passers-by said it all, for so few knew about GMOs or Monsanto itself. They watched in curious curiousity as a group of passionately caring and concerned people gave out leaflets, stopped to talk to them about what is happening to their food, to their children's future, drawing in as many as they could to teach, reach, inform...

Many people seemed quite stunned to see The March going past, for this doesn't happen every day in Torquay, but today, it did...Others though, laughed, jeered....and two young girls walked past me just as one of them yelled to her friend.....

"All this for a fucking cabbage?!"

....and I knew she had just given me the BEST title ever for what happened today.

I walked over to them both..and they looked a little worried. I explained this wasn't about a 'fucking cabbage' at all, but it was about their futures, the future of the children they would more than likely have one day in the future. They had never heard of Monsanto, they were totally unaware that some of the food they have no doubt eaten at some point in their lives, is sprayed with substances so toxic that those who do the spraying have to be covered from head to foot in protective clothing, so as not to become affected by the poisons they are spraying on the crops...poisons which burst open the tiny stomachs of our Tiny Insect Relatives, killing them in the most terrible way...They did not know their Bee Relatives are dying..and they had NO idea that WITHOUT the Bees and the Butterflies, our food does not get pollinated..

Their patronizing and smug smiles began to fade....

"You see those people there..." I said to them, sweeping my arm towards the marchers, now moving up the High Street, away from us..."they are *anything but* crazy. They are not marching to protect a 'fucking cabbage', they are marching to protect YOU and your unborn children to come. They are marching to protect our bees, our insects, ourselves. They are marching to spread the word and to join with tens of thousands of people around the world today who are also coming out to scream, rant, rage or simply stand in silent protest over a company that wants to entirely dominate the food production of the WORLD. And if you think I am telling you lies, then please, keep the leaflet you have been given, and tonight, go home and find out what is happening to *your* world, via Google. Then, tell your friends and tell them to tell their friends, because all of us have to come together, all ages, all backgrounds to rise up and take our world back...Tell your friends to get angry too....

Finally they were listening. I told them NOT to get depressed because The Good People around the world WERE now Rising Up Together to Stop The Shit and what they were seeing today was just a small fraction of a Global Movement of The People joining up to defeat the Insane Corporations....but we needed them to come on board too...

Seriousness had replaced smugness and silliness...and they started to look at their 'Monsanto Leaflet' with different eyes, as I left them with a smile and a reassurance that we WOULD win this fight...together.

A little further up the road and one of the older gentlemen on the march suddenly found himself being shouted and screamed at by a very threatening man who had taken umbridge at being given a leaflet by someone else. He launched himself on this poor man, going right up to his face, "Who the FUCK do you think you are, giving me this fucking leaflet, I just want to eat my fucking lunch!" Whereupon his children also launched themselves upon this quiet and unassuming man too..."Yeah, fuck OFF!" they yelled...."Go on, fuck off!". Then 'The Family of The Year' turned and walked away, anger still bristling...

What do you do with people like that? Deeply aggressive, arrogant prats who have taught their children to be exactly like them, not an ounce of gentleness inside them?

Well, I tell you what you do...you keep walking until you reach the Torquay Arts House a little further up the road and there, you step into a very DIFFERENT world, filled with Love, Hope and Support...

The Torquay Art House was part of the protest, with many of the good folks from there joining the march and opening their doors afterwards to everyone who took part. They've taken over one of the empty shops in town, filled it with art work, settees, a small kitchen, a free shop (where, yes, *everything* is *free*) and bucketloads of LOVE...for here they support each other in any way that's needed...

"Come and connect, with like-minded People and like-minded Hearts" they told us all....

And I knew that what I was seeing here, in its first early days of being set up, was a microcosm of what will soon be happening around the world, for this is ALREADY a place without leaders, with REAL democracy, By The People For The People, in action....People who are there for each other come what may.

Whilst there, the image of that foul and angry man just a short while earlier kept going through my mind...and I wondered how he might change, if he lived in a world without stress, filled with love and support at every turn. Would his anger subside? Yes. Would his children be far happier? Yes....

It is as if we almost need to spray ourselves with our own form of 'Pesticide', not one that destroys our very Beings, but one that TRULY rids us of 'Pests', those who have, for so very long, decided that THEY would rule us in every way, inventing rules, taxes, low wages, prisons, ecocide, genocide, regulations, bills, jobs, schools, armies, war, religions, all to bring control, hatred, control, fear, control and anxiety..

The Time Has Come to Rid Ourselves of ALL those who seek to Control, to Take Over, to Dictate, to Rule...

FIRST...WE TAKE MONSANTO...<<

As for any calls to copy and post entire articles... such has been frowned upon and also lauded in the (distant) past. I think it should be posted but, at one time, we were asked NOT to do so by mods. So, if a mod can advise on this issue as it stands today, it would be greatly appreciated.

And, yes, I do know links die over time. That is why it is important for a mod to comment on this as of "today". If the request NOT to do such some ten years ago has changed, let us know.

Genetically modified foods have been around for millennia, but the modifications have been made through selection. Corn, soybean and cotton crops grown in the U.S. are genetically modified and many modified food crops are in the experimental stage or in limited production. Genetically modified rice is being grown commercially in some Asian localities. Crops that are partially salt resistant are important in some fields.

Monsanto and others have speeded up the process by adding genetic variability to the old method of selection. The rapidly growing world population is driving the research.

A more rational press article on the protest is this from CBC News (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation).

The problem I have with GMO crops is that those holding the patents are busting on mom and pop farmers because bees are carrying the DNA to mom and pop crops and then mom and pop are being sued for stealing the shit???

Give me a break... Not everyone out there wants to plant GMO plants... And these people are being crushed by BIG-AG in courts for just doing waht they have done for generations... And they are being put out of business by BIG-AG who want their farms and fields so they can control everything...

This is David v. Goliath...

That is one important aspect, Bobert. And, Monsanto sues farmers that have NEVER bought their seed but have Monsanto crops growing on thier land that has blown onto their land from neighbouring farms. That is is unacceptacle.

"Monsanto and others have speeded up the process by adding genetic variability to the old method of selection. The rapidly growing world population is driving the research." ~ Q

Finally a rational post.

The US has 4.6% of the world's population and 7% of its land mass, but we feed 20% of the world's people. This is in the face of much of our finest farm land going under to be replaced by houses.

We are desparately trying to keep ahead of the population growth and prevent mass starvation.

Anyone who thinks Monsato gives a fuck about starvation is an idiot. Monsato cares about money. Nothing else. Our farm land isn't being replaced by houses. Farms are replaced by Monsato using any method they can to make it happen. If Monsato was offered the choice between huge profits along with mass starvation or minimal profit with no starvation, which do you think Monsato would choose? Think REAL hard now.

Subject: RE: BS: GMOs (Monsanto)

I agree with Q to the extent that natural selection and farmer's local selection is sped up by gene splicing.

I would add however that what works en masse for mechanized production with chemical inputs may not be the most sustainable in every situation. Local seed-saving allows strains to develop that are well suited to local micro-climate and locals soils and pest populations. I would also add that I believe cross-species gene splicing is extremely high-risk behaviour and I do not believe that ANY corporation should have the right to do it. Ever. Full stop.

I don't agree with any corporation having such enormous control of the world's food prices by forbidding seed-saving--let them gene-splice to prevent viable seed being produced if it's that important to them. I also believe that gene-spliced GMO food must always be labelled, almost no matter how small the percentage of GMO ingredients (but if below, say 1/10th of 1 percent I'd probably be ok with "may contain up to x%..."). I would say that while I don't agree with cross-species gene-splicing, if it is to be allowed, there should be a variety of sensible, comprehensible labelling that differentiates among splicing between related vs unrelated species, genera, or compound splicing, and so on.

I am constantly astonished by the gall of the argument that people have been eating GMO foods for decades with no ill effects. I guess someone can prove that such chemical-input-dependent food production has made no contribution to climbing disease rates?

And of course, may I add, I like to think I'm fairly rational.

There seem to be two scientific and three legal questions that are not fully answered.

First, is there a possibility that intentionally genetically modified organisms can be harmful to other organisms? Whatever the tests I think the answer to this has to be "yes".

Second, can a genetic modification in an organism induce a genetic modification in another - sort of "cross the species barrier"? I am told by some that it cannot but I am not wholly convinced.

Third, should a "no replanting" provision in a patent licence (or licence of plant variety rights) be an unlawful restraint of trade. I don't think it should, but the maximum damages should be a reasonable licence fee as between a willing buyer and a willing seller, not a monopoly rent or higher.

Fourth, should "blow in" or cross fertilisation be an infringement of patent or plant variety rights? I am clear that it should not.

Fifth, should people be entitled to know what they are eating? Of course they should.

I doubt Monsanto has ever conducted any research on long-term effects of their GMO experimentation. Let's not even go into what effects their hormone injection of livestock are doing. How do we know what "blow-in" might do in the long term? Everything Monsato does is with profit margin in mind and nothing else. 10:1 Monsanto will cause mass starvation rather than prevent it.

Much of what Richard Bridge is worth considering.

A new phase of agriculture has been entered, and the effects have not
been studied in detail. Genetically modified seeds can increase food yields by increasing resistance to pests, drought and other unfavorable conditions, but long term effects are not understood.

Monsanto (and others) have obtained patents on genetically modified seed strains. How far should this protection go?
Plant hybridizers have long been given protection for the new varieties that they have placed on the market, but these plants do not have the potential for widespread effects on food crops. Protection of genetically modified plants and other organisms has opened a new window, and the view is disturbing.

I agree that accidental crossing with crops that are not part of the patented strain should not be the subject of prosecution.

In Europe, genetically modified crops are looked upon with disfavor- perhaps with good reason since the long term effects are not known.

If Monsanto is so concerned with people starving it would get behind slowing global warming... We Earthlings are 2 inches of top soil away from starvation... Global warming produces extreme weather that is a danger to our top soil...

Additionally, if Monsanto is so concerned about starvation it would get behind using less or no pesticides which seem to be killing off our bees...

No, Monsanto is in co-ots with Agri-Business to run off the mom and pop farmers to get their land... So they can sell more GMO to Agri-Buisness...

GMOs are part of the new agriculture. Growing populations have made them necessary. The clock cannot be turned back.

Licensing and regulations need to be brought up to date to cover new developments and their effects.

Monsanto is a large supplier of the new seeds, which have been developed not only by their scientists but by researchers in universities and other institutions who have turned over their patents and results to Monsanto for application and distribution.

The mom 'n pop farmers tend to be more responsible since all they have is what they have and not into doing things that jeopardize their most important asset: their dirt...

Scientists `pressured' to approve cattle drug: Health Canada researchers accuse firm of bribery in bid to OK `questionable' product

Veterinary scientists from Health Canada's Human Safety Division testified yesterday that they are being pressured to approve a controversial hormone intended to boost milk production in dairy cattle. ``We have been pressured and coerced to pass drugs of questionable safety, including rBST,'' Dr. Shiv Chopra told the Senate Standing Committee on Agriculture and Forestry.

The senators sat dumbfounded as Dr. Margaret Haydon told of being in a meeting when officials from Monsanto Inc., the drug's manufacturer, made an offer of between $1 million and $2 million to the scientists from Health Canada -- an offer that she told the senators could only have been interpreted as a bribe.

Dr. Haydon also recounted how notes and files critical of scientific data provided by Monsanto were stolen from a locked filing cabinet in her office. Dr. Chopra said that all files pertaining to rBST are now controlled by one senior bureaucrat and can only be viewed by gaining permission. ``I can't even believe I'm in Canada when I hear that your files have been stolen and that all the files are now in the hands of one person,'' said Senator Eugene Whelan. ``What the hell kind of a system have we got here?''"
