May 2013 thread

I'm cleaning up the kitchen this evening. It's warm out so I'm waiting till dusk to walk the dogs. I've just brought in a wonderful piece of furniture that will provide a lot of storage, but it is so decorative that I need to arrange the furniture elsewhere in the house so I can put this in a prominent place.

With a good diet and exercise I am down 15 pounds, with more to go, but this is good progress. I have a growing stack of discarded clothing that is going to the Goodwill soon.

My son was here overnight before I took him to the airport to head off to his summer internship. His room has the scent of his favorite body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. I could go in and open all of the bottles but they wouldn't mix in the same why to have that smell that is him. I'll wait a couple of more days before I pull the sheets and wash them. :)

Got distracted watching a streaming channel from Oklahoma City. They were hit broadside by another complex of tornadoes. None of that weather here, though tomorrow we have a 50% chance of rain. I need to plan for work in the yard before the rain, then continue in the house once it starts. I like rainy days this time of year - the garden just explodes with growth in a way that sprinkling with tap water just doesn't accomplish.

Four items for sale on eBay and four have watchers - good! Out to weed, and shortly after lunch a couple of these should finish. Hopefully I can hand them off to the mail carrier this afternoon, if they pay fast.

I need to get out the furniture polish and give this new cabinet a good once over. When I walk past it has the musty smell of a piece of furniture that was once in a smoking household. Not super strong - I suspect it has been out of that environment for a while, but enough that I need to address it because I grew up with that smell (Mom was a heavy smoker) and I don't like it.

Must finish my running around and weeding this morning - looks like thunderstorms in the afternoon, including the threat of hail, so I'll put the truck in the garage. Putting it in is easy - open the garage door, Zeke runs down the drive and hops in the pickup, then I drive into the garage and close the door. To get it back out I have to put Zeke in the kennel, get the truck out, close the garage door, then let the dog out of the kennel. To keep him voluntarily going in I need to make it a game by throwing his ball several times. :)

Today I have a concrete date set for the yard sale. I have almost 2 months to finish getting everything ready. It coincides nicely with the fact that today the transformation of my office/throw it here because I don't know what else to do with it room begins! I will be taking photos to share of before and after! When I am done, it will be my quilting studio. I have committed to some fall craft fairs so it is time to get busy!!!! I am sooo excited!

Well, I'd say today was a wasted day, but I DID finish a book and I DID take a nap and I DID get a couple items dated to 1989 and put in the proper binder.

Zero to sixty -- or rather 50sF. to 90sF. with no adjustment period. Humid, too -- that's unusual for this early in the...I guess it must be summer. Remember, parts of the state just west of us had snow last weekend...

After breakfast I debated between putting clothes on and going out to follow up on some of those yard sale signs I saw yesterday or turning on the fan and taking a nap. Since I couldn't keep my eyes open, that's what I did.

Got some minor weed pulling accomplished around the Siberian irises -- the yellow tall beardeds are blooming and one of the purples. Raked some more dry leaves off the "lawn" (well, it could be lawn if I can consistently rake the dried leaves off the area AND transplant the various volunteers that should be in a flower bed). Also plotted which small trees down the hill out back can be taken down (yet again) with a lopper (REAL SOON) and which will require a bow saw.

Planted some (bought cheap yesterday) chartreuse-colored vinca in the planters at the head of the driveway when I got the mail. And the mail (very surprising for a Saturday) was all important stuff.

Killed the deer tick I found crawling on my pants leg. (Yes, despite the heat and the humidity, if I'm out back in Tick Land I'm wearing long pants and socks and heavy shoes.) Oh, just found another one wandering around on my pants leg. Flushed that one down the sink.

Talked to my neighbor a little while ago and she would like the 4 pieces of the clear acrylic pyramid I have in my car (that another friend didn't come to the Press Room for last night).

I guess it wasn't as much of a wasted day as I thought.

I have made a massive clearance in the china cabinet: an entire dinner service for six (probably started out as a service for 12) that belonged to my grandparents. My sister-in-law wanted it -- hooray!

Today I bought a pair of construction worker's kneepads to reduce the range of excuses for not washing the kitchen floor properly. Sanitation for the nation!

Charmion, good news when someone wants a relic like that. I had my great grandmother's semi-vitreous china, and as pretty as it was, it was semi-vitreous and isn't really water or food proof - food can mark the porcelain through the cracks. I sold much of it on eBay, gave the rest to the Goodwill. I kept a few un-crazed pieces as mementos from my great grandmother.

About 1/3 of the big garden is weeded and there is garden produce for meals every day. I'm eating smaller amounts of meat, and I've decided to drop alcohol out of my diet. Though I miss an evening Scotch, I don't need the empty calories.

It took the length of running two PBS documentaries while I worked but I finally got the kitchen clean again, and cooked up a squash for lunch tomorrow. I had some fresh mushrooms I needed to use, and cut up a zucchini, then after they were both sauteed I poured over a pint of my canned diced tomatoes. Topped it with a little Parmesan cheese and cooked a bit of pasta to mix in.

Tomorrow I'm going to test three different cameras on the tripod I set on the kitchen counter to see which takes the best closeup photos (with the central part of the tripod reversed so it hangs between the legs it works just like a copy stand.) Getting ready to list some small stuff on eBay.

Just made a fruit salad and may take some of it over to a friend's in Portsmouth later this morning. It's supposed to be cooler in Portsmouth...high 80sF. instead of low 90sF here in Nottingham. (Don't think I'll need a sweater...)

Linn! Is there any NH ombudsperson?? It is so outrageous that those who really need help and are totally stressed by the need, cannot even get straight answers. I finding weeding a centering activity. At least I am doing something!

Ok, it is June. Already. 28 days to move out and still no truck. And no R today as he stayed in the city and I have four kits to feed. It's Ok cause I feel rotten with a sore throat and tired. I have upped the vit C and Pau d'Arco to every hour or so, today, as that seems to be what is needed to function and not hurt. I have not had this for years.

SRS: The raccoon mom is down at the mill but I do not believe she is alive. She would not leave her babes for over 24 hours and them screaming their heads off for MOM! But after a dreadful hot. humid day yesterday, we had a great storm starting about 9 pm. I went out and brought the kits in, back in the smaller cage, so they would not get soaked. They sleep most of the time, once they are fed.

I am fascinated by the personalities these kits have already developed. They are probably less than 8 weeks and one seems to be designated look out, one is shy, one knows to come to me demanding the bottle she craves while the 3 drink from bowls and seem to have forgotten how to suck. Child development. Our McGill professor addressed this with the comment, "Some kids come out fighting and they're that way all their lives!" That is their nature but, with human kids, we can nurture them into being able to deal with the inherent temperament.

Feisty squirrel managed to push the screen in the bathroom and get in. Maybe that was the noises. She went back out and I closed the window until I look at the situation better. Maybe keep it closed so she does not tear the screen. My hope is she will leave the porch for the great out of doors, permanently, through the hole in the screening. Squirrels develop quickly and are soon ready for life on their own. Raccoons generally stay with mom a full year.

Have not gotten much else done these few days. We did dash out yesterday to a yard sale near the cabin and got a $10 push mower for the city - about 15 foot square of grass but I am tired of cutting it with scissors! I am putting the laundry away and sorting out stuff for the thrift shop - from stuff R found at the Mill and I laundered.

I ordered a new distiller after finally finding a Canadian source. Mine is only making about 20 % of a jug. The rest seems to go up in steam. Mystery. I continue to use it because I am almost out.

And I am managing to de-clutter the emails from clayart inch by inch - most are keepers/good info saved to file and deleted. Some, on second look, deleted. And kill mosquitoes which have found their way indoors!

My weight loss is stalled at 8#. Feel to lousy to do anything in the studio so no exercise at all. Maybe later today I will feel like doing something.

Dorothy, a small electric weed whacker would have taken care of that grass instead of trimming with scissors, but an old push mower is great. I have one I pull out for small jobs - it is a workout! I may have to use my electric trimmer today - I can't get the head off of the gas one, it's jammed on. I'll sort it out, but I need to trim now, not struggle with a trimmer cap for a while first.

This morning I looked at the tea and eating stuff on my otherwise clear peninsula counter and decided to putter while the kettle heated. I have a silver-plate tray that my general items on (a crystal thing to hold a few tea bags, a tiny saucer to hold my tea strainer, my stevia container, a couple of baby silver spoons for stevia and measuring loose tea, and a salt and pepper shaker.) I used silver polish to clean, washed the sparkling crystal tea holder, cleaned the brushed steel pepper mill, washed the glass salt shaker - you get the drift - and now that little center of activity sparkles. I usually ignore that stuff, but now it looks decorative. While I was at it I cleaned and polished the shiny steel hot water kettle and polished the toaster. Not quite an exhibit in the Brooklyn Museum, but my counter top stuff is once again in its like-new polished artistic state.

I have to mow, then make a run to the recycle bins down at city hall. I need to rework my recycle setup - when I took that computer desk to Goodwill I got rid of the thing I tucked my glass and plastic bag under. I'll need to find a new place for a smaller container.

The purpose of this message

Well, that blue clicky will either work or it won't. Lost my previous paragraph in the process.

Once more, with feeling:

SRS! We don't have a weed whacker either. There has never been enough grass in the back yard to bother. Three years ago, I started nurturing these tiny clumps and moving any I found to the same area. Keeping them cut helped them grow. Now there is a large enough area to mow - in about 5 minutes! EXCEPT I have let most of it grow tall enough to go to seed. After the seeds mature, then I will cut it with the scythe so it is short enough to mow. I did not try seeding because of all the little stones I want to remove but had no place to put them. When the neighbour FINALLY finishes their reno, I will chosen a place for them.

I am feeling a great deal better. Kits are back outside though they may have to come in again tonight as another storm may be brewing. I thought of a place at the mill to plant my five tomato plants and the perennials I have collected so far, Most of the areas need earth moved in quantity but I just thought of a good spot. Tomorrow if I can find the tools... It is supposed to be not too hot and not raining.

I was out front preparing to finish trimming the edge of the yard when I friend came by. I hadn't seen her for a few weeks and she was surprised at the weight I'd lost - this was the first "wow! you've lost weight!" response in two months. My coworkers see me every day so it is less obvious to them. This was a great affirmation that the alternate day fast is working. I've spent a few hours chopping out weeds this weekend and my stamina was much better than when I first laid out the beds in the garden. And I can feel my biceps coming back from under the flab layer that was on my upper arms.

Yard work a good 90 min/day, aeems to be all i can manage/day in terms of exercise.

every doc keeps telling me to walk for exercise, and once upon a time I did a lot of walking. Knees and rt hip have put limits on how much walking I can do and they just don't hear me.

I did drop off my beloved bike this morning for the annual tune-up, so that will get me out in the sunshine. I remember when the keyboardist in my contra banc didn't notice I'd lost 90 pounds ...

Noted for being oblivious, I did not notice when someone I saw daily shaved off a full beard! The co-worker, a few years ago, who noticed I had lost weight was concerned for my health! "Are you OK?" Shoot, I still was at about 135-140, and happy to have gotten there! - but she was.... overweight.

Losing 90 pounds must have been monumental!

Just a thought: 18 months ago when my knee and hip pains had me feeling 150, my health consultant suggested magnesium. A week later I walked normally. I take it a couple times a week just in case.

On the other hand, without health insurance, I am not riding a bike lest I fall and break something, the only reason I would seek medical care.

So a lovely day at the cabin - cool and breezy. Kits and I are getting into a routine. A second one came to me and requested a bottle at lunch. She had already been at the bowl but she knew she needed more and I was glad to give it to her. Very time consuming, though. A meal takes near an hour and I am concerned that shy one needs more than she is getting from the bowls. She did snarl back at a sib today to get her place at the table! These guys communicate better than a lot of humans!

I was able to get up early and have packed several boxes - a SMALL dent in the STUFF that needs to be packed. Goal is to pack up everything that is not essential to the next month. Need more boxes! Soft goods will go into clear plastic bags - BIG ones. I may have a car load to go by tomorrow and hope for a good day and energy to load, go to the mill, unload and do the planting. Maybe even go to the library. And a bag full for the thrift shop.

I cleaned up my show shelves from their months on the porch and stacked them to make more room. The boxes were out there so now they are not. The squirrels seem to have freaked out and left. They will probably be back to eat.

I started packing papers and then thought I could eliminate some but that was too time consuming so I am back to just packing them. Too much interesting info. and maybe someone will just have to throw it all out sometime but where there is life there is hope - that I might still look through it and reduce it tremendously.

And I have deleted or moved to file almost 400 clayart emails. I am almost up to March! There is so much good info. Just this aft, I realized a better way of dealing with them! DUH! I get a digest at least once a day, of all the emails since the last digest. I could have been deleting all but the digests; instead I have deleted all the digests - 'til now! And from now on! Who's a slow learner?

Now to de-clutter my bank account.

It's not officially summer but it is warming up, and this is the time of year when I have to get up earlier if I want to work in the yard before it's too hot. I'm making the shift this week with my alarms (the one that is a few feet away from the bed and is set so it snoozes, and my phone alarm that is in fact rather alarming when it goes off - the one that I'll start waking up ahead of because I dislike it so!)

The scale says I'm down another couple of pounds, now in the lower half of the 10 pound segment I'm working on now - I was on a plateau for a couple of weeks but seem to have gotten past it. I'll mow the back yard tonight, a great form of exercise that seems to give the best weight-loss result.

I've enjoyed weeding out clothes from the closet - but I see that some of the casual clothes I used to wear for work that I can fit into now aren't dressy enough for the current dress code. I'll keep some and donate others. I'm looking forward to updating my wardrobe when I reach my target weight, but I may need a trip to the thrift store for intermediate dressy slacks (I don't want to buy new pants I won't wear long.)

I've seen several gardening references by some of us on facebook - are we all finally at a point where we are in some stage of growing crops?

(I don't want to buy new pants I won't wear long.) What a great way to keep on!

I did a terrible thing last night. I did not ensure that all hands were out of the way before closing the cage door. !! hours later, I went out to bring the kits in for morning meal and one was lying on her back crying terribly with her tiny hand caught - and my heart went ARGHHH! It was down to about 40 this morning.

SO I spent almost 3 hours with this tiny screaming mite on my lap, on a heating pad and cuddled against me. She was really cold! She screamed for about an hour, then quietened mostly. After two hours, she started to purr a little when I scratched her ears. Finally, I put her into a cat carrier to keep her from climbing around on her swollen hand and fed the other three - 3 hours late but they were still in bed! Put them back outside and fed the injured kit with a syringe; she usually eats out of the bowl.

Relieved that she was recovering and it looks as though the hand will be OK. She is in isolation until then. And not happy to be separated from sibs. She, of course, was the most aggressive one so the kit who usually had to struggle to get to drink out of one of the 3 bowls, had her choice and still would eat a bit and walk away, then back and forth - covered with milk - on feet and face ... I did see her grooming her feet! And she climbed into something looking like a litter pan to poop! They have one in the cage.

Then I had lunch and, feeling totally wrecked by my failure as a mom, no energy at all. So the afternoon has been reading and internet and sharing info with folks. Have no idea when to feed them next. Today has been moved to tomorrow.

Tom and I have amazing friends. Today we went over to a local farm (about 20 miles away) for which friends bought us a CSA share, including a blueberry share, so we could "get the tour" and figure out the logistics of either picking up eggs and/or produce at the farm or at one of the local farmer's markets (the farm is probably equadistant to the Saturday Portsmouth farmer's market). Got eggs and mixed greens and pea greens for salads today. The farm is just down the road from where a high school classmate of Tom's lived -- he was out practicing the bagpipes in the field (this was back 30 or 40 years ago before there were any subdivisions out there) when he found himself encircled by cows... Josh got a kick out of the story. He's a really really canny musician (besides having a degree in Philosophy and being an organic farmer) and is married to Jean who has an incredible voice.

Anyway, besides the CSA share, these friends (after having me do the research) bought us a high end home food dehydrator which -- surprise! -- arrived yesterday. She has an ulterior motive -- she wants me to figure out its fine points so she can ask me questions on how to use hers. She also sent us two books, "Food Drying With An Attitude" and "Holy Shit: Managing Manure to Save Mankind"...so I've got some reading ahead of me.

With friends like these...we'll survive and survive well. What wonderful friends are these...

BTW, mailed off the change of ownership and change of beneficiary papers to Tom's life insurance company. This is the last thing we needed to do to qualify for the program. I truly wish we had been told MUCH EARLIER (like 2 months ago) that Tom could just assign ownership of the policy to me instead of signing it over to the State of New Hampshire. If only we could get the same information from at least two of all the people we're dealing with. Exasperating, but it's almost over.

I also emailed off the interview answers to the writer who is doing a story on the Friday Press Room trad session that Tom has been leading for over 30 years. (One more deadline!)

But I didn't get the perennial euphorbia and lemon balm dug up to trade with my neighbor for lamb's ears...but, then again, he switched this afternoon for tomorrow, so it will get done then.

And, who knows, maybe I'll get my car soon. The dealer is waiting for hangers for the new rear bumper.

Someday my eye will stop twitching...

I have lambs ears and lemon balm - they survive with benign neglect.

That's good news about the eggs and produce and food dehydrator. I suppose I could do some sun dried tomatoes and they wouldn't take up nearly as much space as canning.

So sorry to read about the raccoon with the caught foot - slowing that one down a little may let the other small one thrive enough to compete well.

Got a haircut today, the back of my neckline has been itching all day. Must hop in the shower soon.

Thanks, SRS! I'll watch the mail.

i have been doing my PT exercises on a regular basis and can really feel a tightening up and realigning of my hips, knees, etc. with barely walking (just around the house.) My Rog finally was able to watch my osteopath do an hour's work on me. He was literally astounded at the difference in how well I could move. She always checks, first, to see if my hips are lined up. Maybe you could find a good soft-tissue adjusting osteo to help out?

I lost more than half of my perennial bed to drought this winter. My brother weeded out everything but three plants left. We will get new plants, soon, and replant. No produce at the moment. Neither of us has the energy, plus this valley is very abundant with good organic stands, so we're "eating out."

We have a swanky food dehydrator. used it one year...seemed to take a long time. just not "us" i guess.

now for a good cry of disappointment and a short nap. Rog's day off isn't after expecting the day off for a couple of weeks.

Fed the kits earlier last night so I could put them out in daylight. No one came near the door while I was closing it! The hurt one is still in the house in the cat carrier. I fear her wrist may be broken so put a "splint" on it. Surprise - she has not tried to remove it. Named her Aggie (aggressive one), the other Addie- who does not have to fight for food and does not know how to act! She drinks some and wanders, then some more... Meanwhile Serena ( who just drinks her bottle like a lady and then sits on my lap until Corey (the only male) finally finishes his. Today he finally started sucking! instead of chewing on the nipple forever. Feed Aggie before the others, with a syringe.

It was fascinating to me to bring them in and dump them on the floor and see who does what - I cannot tell one from the other except by behaviour. Serena: "Why are you putting me by the bowls; you know I want a bottle." Corey: "Oh, yeah! I want a bottle too!" - after a few laps at the bowl, he came over to me.

After a hot bath last night, I went out like a light just after 10 and did not open my eyes until almost 9 am! This maladie is taking a toll. I really think it is connected to whatever is sprayed on the fields. I remember being sick for a month this time last year.

R tells me the new distiller is at the PO so I will drive in after feeding tonight and come back in the morning. The old one died completely a couple days ago.

Today I loaded the packed boxes into the car and a big bag for the thrift shop, drove to the Mill and off loaded boxes, to the shop and offloaded bag and bought 3 good pairs of socks and a T-shirt with pocket (for cell phone_ for R. Then along to drop off a box of clay for a friend, who gave me some asparagus and offered me water but I had no bottles with me, and a stop at the newly discovered bakery for... NO choc cake! but a loaf of 9 grain bread and reduced price croissants frozen.

I have now lost 10 pounds which does not show at all but helps my determination.

Mary's post reminds me to order some needed supplements - and be happy for her after this scary month.

Dorothy, I can commiserate. Years ago when I worked at a printing company that had just moved into a new building, every May I'd have laryngitis for two or three weeks (or longer). Finally a doctor told me I was probably allergic to mold or something in the heating/AC ducts (keep in mind, this was a NEW building...). When I left their employ, the annual laryngitis went away and never came back.

Just de-accessioned a really cool colored (blue and red all over) teddy bear and another stuffed toy to a neighbor girl -- and took her parents a few good-sized clumps of perennial euphorbia which I dug today out of places it shouldn't be growing. I took home a clump of stachys (lamb's ears) to regenerate my border.

For supper tonight I sauteed up some pea tendrils in olive oil and garlic. Good. Sort of like spinach with a bit of fresh pea flavor. But I think I like them better in a salad -- much stronger fresh pea flavor (and crunch, of course).

Today was R&R -- went over to visit with a friend whose husband just had surgery yesterday.

The kitchen is still looking good but there is a lot of stuff sitting around the house now. Many projects underway, it'll get better as a few are finished.

I filled out the knowledge, skills, abilities forms and the preferred jobs list for the reorganization at work. I don't want to speculate, and I wonder if I maybe should have put things in a bit different order, but I get the impression there will be time for tweaking. I'm well ahead of the deadline. I took the printouts of the online surveys, read and filled them out, thought about them for a couple of days, then finally did the online versions that count today.

I'm seeing some hand dermatitis from wine last week (I had a glass a couple of weeks ago also) - clearly this is one of the triggers for this allergic reaction. It'll take a week or two to cycle through the stages of dry and cracked skin before it clears up. Then - after it has been fine for a while - it's Cherry Garcia. If I'm going to try chocolate to find out the reaction, it might as well be Ben and Jerry's!

A busy day yesterday, starting with breakfast out (Edmund's favourite treat) and a stern workout at the gym with some new routines. Today, everything south of the pelvis is a bit sore and I'm tired all over ... I don't care what they say in the advertisements, 58 is not the new 35; it's still the same old 58 and I don't bounce like I used to.

Weight has stabilized at just above 170, after a month of lower-gut issues that caused extensive inflammation and bloating. Now that everything intestinal is back to normal, a slow and steady decline in weight should soon resume. I hope. But I'm really okay if it doesn't, just so long as I don't get too fat for the Eddie Bauer jeans that I had to buy a month ago.

Another major piece of paperwork knocked off --this one is worth about 250 bucks and the deadline is June 30. I'll have it to the PO and in the mail this afternoon on my way to raid a friend's garden for more stachys (and whatever else she wants to part with).

I dug some more euphorbia this morning, but got the sage planted. Planted the stachys I got last night from a neighbor. He didn't have that big a clump to start with so I didn't accept much from him to rebuild my border. I also moved a variegated ornamental grass from one bed out back to another that will, I think, have more sun. It never thrived in the old location and just appeared to be hanging on. Also pulled some more weeds and small maple seedlings out of what should be "lawn" (well, grass or groundcover outside of the flower beds).

BTW, I can't seem to identify one weed that I've been pulling. It's leaves resemble wild strawberries (but usually doesn't grow as large) and has a yellow flower. It spreads by reddish running stems. Any ideas?

It's funny, half of the "lawn pests" at the standard websites are either ground covers I rather like or are edible plants. I guess I really don't like the type of lawns city folk seem to think are most attractive. I don't mind any of the clovers, and creeping charlie makes a nice groundcover in some places. I really don't want to mow any more than I have to which is why the flower bed behind the house is there -- when I tried to make it lawn with a flower border, it wouldn't cooperated. I figured if the flowers wanted so much to grow there, it could be a flower bed if it wanted. And, hey, I don't have to mow it...

Better go make lunch before Tom wastes away...;-)

I agree, Linn. My lawn is a mix of grass and weeds that I mow to look like turf. I've been watching for clover seed when I'm at the feed store, but they're usually out. I think clover might crowd some of the plants that even I consider weeds.

I watered last night - moved the sprinkler around to several zones, ran water for a couple of hours - then when I looked at the patio this morning at time to feed the dogs I thought "I didn't water the back." There was standing water from a substantial rain overnight. Darn.

I took a few sweet banana peppers to work this morning for a co-worker - she asked if they were washed. Nope - they're just out of the garden, but it's an organic garden so there's nothing there to worry about. She eats them like raw like a snack - I can see if I have a pepper surplus this summer she'll be pleased! :)

I've scheduled myself a long weekend so maybe I can tackle some more of the house and garden things that need work. Part of the garden is looking great. Now that we've had rain and watering, by the weekend it ought to be perfect for more weeding further along the bed. And though I don't workout like Charmion, I get this kind of exercise and am hoping my biceps look better after chopping out all of these weeds. Many of our particulars are the same - age, and my weight is at 173 now. I hope by next week I'll be below 170, I'm having success with fasting alternate days (with one small meal on that day - fruit or veggies - under 500 calories for the day). The thing about slowly gaining the weight and perceptions is that I always kind of thought I was in this current range even when I was 20 pounds heavier (I never stepped on the scale). So now I've worked and lost 20 and I'm where I thought I was for a long time. :-/ Now the real work begins, to get to what for most of my adult life I considered my "normal" weight, around 145-150.

Just back from a friend's garden with more stachys (lamb's ears), crane's bill (scented geranium), peppermint, oregano and a sedum I don't have. (I'm a succulent freak -- I'd love to have a patch of each and I think I read somewhere that there's about 400 varieties in the US.)

It's later in the afternoon than I expected and it's cooled off quite a bit -- going to rain. I got the plants out of the car and in a spot where they'll get wet real soon now.

Finally got a start on the fish chowder for supper. Wanted to make it this morning so the flavors could marry all day. Ah well. This will work. I've even got Guinness to go with it. Guinness is amazing with any seafood.

We gave up on grass years ago, and nobody's more citified than us. In front of our narrow, tall town house, we have a handkerchief-sized garden -- basically a raised bed -- with flowering perennials that don't mind not getting any sun until after one o'clock in the afternoon. The back is a patio surrounded by a six-foot fence, so it's hostas and astilbe back there, too.

Grass is highly over-rated if you don't have little kids who need play space.

I really do not think much of grass and an environmental engineer friend agreed that it is only a bit better than macadam/concrete. Rain water runs tight off and helps create horrible flooding in developments. However, most people are addicted to it so when my poor dear son was trying to sell my property in PA those darn flowers were a big draw back.

At the cabin, there is almost none and I am going to just let it grow. the landlord will eventually take the weed whacker to it. But, when I rented a house in Nova Scotia one summer, the landlord waited until it was good and high and then the large lawn was cut for hay! I liked the daisies!

I like Charmion;s gardens! But the yard in the city is big for that treatment and the grass now needs a scythe to get it short enough to mow, which will, then, be about a five minute job. I went in last night after the feeding, intending to do some laundry and pick up my already arrived distiller this morning.

I forgot the laundry! But I cleaned out the perishables and brought them back to the country this am. Back at the cabin, I set up the new distiller and put the new gasket in the old one, fed the kits and took the car in for servicing. This latter is going to further de-clutter my account. Another trip in next week for the parts they have to order and 4 new tires.

Got back to cabin about 5 and had two gallons of distilled water ready. I had thought the old distiller dead but it clearly is still good to go. I am glad to have a spare.

Ordered the supplements. Walked a good distance this aft back from town to the garage in a light mist. My car is happier and I feel better.

Aggie helps me eat less. If I make much noise in the kitchen, she wakes up and wants to be fed so I am staying out of the kitchen. Now, it is time to go make supper for Aggie and me and bring the rest in a bit later, then a hot bath and bed.

The thing that bugs me most about my environmental problems is that other people are probably being sick for the same reasons but do not know the cause, go to doctors who do not know either. Also, I have never let my life be ruled by fear but I FEAR the tanks of whatever they are spraying on the fields. So darn tired of being made sick through no fault of my own.

The mystery plant is creeping cinquefoil. It has it's uses, but I think I'll just pull it out when I see it. I rather like the greater celandine with its interesting leaves and big buttery yellow flowers. But I pull that, too, when it encroaches on domesticated plants.

I'm not sure what to attack next -- raking and clearing the area under the hemlocks and the back of the back bed (so I can set up my lawn lounge chair and drinks holder there) or start pulling and bagging the thorn bushes in the bed behind the house or lopping and cutting brush out back... Probably I'll "putter" and continue doing a bit of everything at once.

There are sabretooth-sized dust kittens needing attention around the house. Must use the dustmop and vacuum soon.

I was OUT on errands and such, for nearly the whole day with Rog and then Morgan joined after lunch. I've lots to relate, but will have to do it tomorrow.)

BUT I have to tell you about a very precious kind thing. Mailed on the 4th, received at the PO sometime, I got it today on our weekly PO run. Fast service; A small envelope came from Houston and when I opened it I was, as our friends cross the pond say, "Gobsmacked" and started to cry. I couldn't even talk. Maggie sent me the most beautiful, perfect amethyst pendant. It's my fav. stone (she didn't know)set in a    very elegant, yet simple setting of silver.

If you hold it to the light there are slight variations of colour absolutely perfect for my visualisations of the purple/violet light, the transmuting flame of a higher power. There are also some very moving occlusions which, to me,look as though they are dancing. Maggie defintely "tuned" in when she chose this for me and I am so greatfull.

Maggie, thank you so much. My life is so enriched by my friends here.

I'm glad you like it, Kat! That was the intention! A bright little spot of color to focus on when you need to.

I weeded some of the stuff in the sun room cupboard - it is something I had the contractor put in the room when I remodeled. It's only about 14" deep and it has a glass sliding closet door over it so the mirrors make the room look much larger. I've been storing crystal in the upper shelves but there was still some kid stuff down below. I got rid of bottles of paint that are so viscous they can't be used, kept a few, along with tons of brushes. I was going to toss the old boxes of crayons but that is like throwing away my children - I'll move it into one of their bedroom closets. (The smell of crayons - that's one of the smells of their childhood!)

In my closet this morning I pulled the rest of a stack of shorts and Capri pants off of the upper shelf. They fit - and the Capri pants are a size 12. :) I'm growing a stack of things to discard. I found a pair of jeans that are attractive and fit but the zipper is broken, so I'll see if I can find a brass zipper to replace it with.

My ex came over with some tickets for a play in a couple of weeks. I'll take Susie. We walked around the garden and I sent him home with an assortment. I found a large red tomato - I can't believe that I let him have it also! He must still be a good friend. . .

Didn't get anything planted yesterday. It was supposed to rain (which, unless it was really heavy, would actually HELP in the planting), but I went upstairs after breakfast and got lost in 1980 through 1994. Made use of some of the new binders (thanks, Maggie!!!) to relieve the crowding, put accumulated ephemera in place (working on emptying the holding file box), and went through a few years noting events on pages in the calendar at the front, so I have a digital record of what's in the binder and thus can easier find a date when it's needed. When I finally surfaced, it was four o'clock...

Right now I'm typing up those notes, incorporating them into the calendar files and adding my reading list for the year, too. I've kept annual reading lists since November 1, 1972.

I worked on the calendar for 1993 before breakfast, now I'm finishing up 1994.

Since it's my birthday, we're going to Newick's on Great Bay for my ten bucks off later. Bet they still won't have any rubber squid in their gift shop... I'll pick up a B.D. cake on the way home...plus flowers "from" Tom and a couple tins of smoked oysters also "from" Tom. It really upsets him that he can't shop and choose gifts for me anymore. He can't even see well enough to do it online.

I should go outside and plant something...

Happy birthday, Linn!

I had a lunch with lots of homegrown stuff that I picked today. Along with grilling a defrosted steak I grilled a couple of tomatoes and a zucchini, I boiled some new potatoes till tender then squashed them just a little and set them to saute in butter, with salt and pepper. Added a bowl of Swiss chard on the side. I had a couple of overripe bananas so dessert was a strawberry banana smoothie. I have stuff ready for the week, including my "fruit days" (or veggie days).

Lots of sweeping and dusting finished yesterday, and today I've been putting everything in the dishwasher for more spring-like cleaning (this morning the plastic drain board and dish pan, plus the silicone mats from the sinks went through a full cycle.)

We got several inches of rain last night so I'm not going to try to mow today. Weeding is also difficult when it is so muddy. I'll find stuff to keep me busy around here. :)

AH, Linn! I was trying to remember what that plant was. Two huge greater celandine in the flower bed in the city. Soon will be moved elsewhere but right now they look great.

AND Happy Birthday, Linn!

Today there is sun at the Mill - and elsewhere! The tiny trees we planted a couple weeks ago are well watered in and look happy. I am still looking for where I might plant other things. I will go with my garden fork to check the soil in one hopeful spot when the sun is not so hot.

Friday I drove to the city, did two loads of laundry and came back, with R, to hear the Durham County Poets. hey are so terrific. Sat, R was going to have a couple guys come down to work at the mill but we decided that meant 2 hours driving so R would work on his own but we were half way here and someone phoned and really wanted two young fellows to work so we drove to the city to pick them up. Got back about 1 pm but R and the two young lads worked until midnight and accomplished prodigious amounts. Between dust and fumes, I had to stay away from the building. I did food runs and we took the kids to the cabin for showers and sleep. SUPER nice brothers, 17 and 19, I told them I would be happy to have them as grandsons. They are really fine young men. On the way down to the Mill this morning, via the scenic route, they said they had never experienced the country before! They really like the quiet and trees....

My malady seems much better today! I guess the rain did settle the toxins being sprayed on fields. The poor little kits had a rough day yesterday as we did not feed them til 12:30 am. And they were truly ticked to go back into the little cage last night after a long lonely day and chittered at us, from under the blanket I put over it, for quite a while. Today they are back in the larger cage and happy to have room to climb around.

WE now have the solarium into good enough shape that a bed can go in there. The guys have scraped loose paint off ceilings and painted most of an area about 20 by 50! What a great thing a coat of paint is! Using Alkyd due to the mold factor so the fumes are... Doors open, including BIG garage doors. The breeze blows through and the fumes can be smelled coming out the doors!

I am feeling that there is hope that we will actually have some sort of civilized space here AND things will get moved before the 30 June. I may spend the rest of my life sorting things out! BUT! just got a call from R that he has located the gardening tools, missing for weeks. So I shall go see what I can do.

Thanks for the B.D. wishes! Ate too much at Newick's so didn't sample the cake (Irish Cream Chocolate) until a little while ago.

Got a phone call early this morning from a friend who was driving by -- to tell me that a neighbor had a really nice dresser out at the road with a "FREE" sign on it. Took me a while to convince him that FREE isn't good enough -- I don't have any room for it. Saw it later and it's a tall chest of drawers, so there are even fewer places (none upstairs) where it could fit. It's nice, dark walnut, looks solid. But I have NO place for it.

Went to a yardsale later and got a really nice large sieve for 50 cents and a bunch of pairs of earrings and necklaces for a grand total of 5 bucks...I need jewelry like cats need wings. (But they were pretty and I bought them.)

Didn't plant anything again today so I'll have to get busy tomorrow. Did get a the additions typed into the 1993 calendar, though, so that's done and I put stuff into 1995. Yeah, I know. The weather was glorious and I should have been outside.

Had a lovely day, though.

Linn, I feel like those binders are contributing to your gardening delinquency.

This afternoon I loaded the 36" Sony television into the truck (I shifted it from the table onto a rolling office chair and rolled them through the halls and out to the pickup). The TV, booklet, and remote control are now down at Goodwill. My son had used it for his video games, but he said he doesn't need it any more. Next comes an appointment to have the loveseat in his room picked up by the Salvation Army. There's a big video game he wants to keep in my sunroom that is, one way or another, going to be slid down the hall and into his room. Then I can move stuff in a significant way around the sun room. Both the TV and the computer desk/hutch I donated last week came from the next door neighbor. I think that is it for the bulk (she also gave me the sewing machine that my daughter has, but that old Singer is a keeper!)

No, Maggie, not gardening delinquency. I just sometimes need to remember the key word of BALANCE. I haven't had a chance to work on the archives for awhile (thanks to all the other bumf in my life) and I got carried away. Good though...

Did some more this morning while my hair was drying. Then got dressed and threw in some laundry. Need to wash Tom's sheet and pillowcase as soon as the washer is again available. (One load of wash, two loads of drying...)

The problem with the new driveway is I feel compelled to pick up all the little twigs and clumps of leaves and single leaves, etc. that fall into it daily. Did some of that while emptying the chamberpot around the hostas. Emptied the litter boxes, too.

Brought Tom's concertina and Friday's free papers in from the car when I took out a bag to take to Goodwill tomorrow.

Also removed the plastic from the office chair that's been stored on the deck. thought I'd take it to Goodwill, but the seat got soaked and is mildewing so it's trash and will go to the dump (and not the dump swap shop). Should have taken it to Goodwill a year ago before Tom came home from rehab. (Live and learn -- mostly about myself -- putting off decisions is not necessarily the best option; I hate waste, but that's what my indecision has done.)

Now need to sweep the tree crap (that's a technical term) off the deck and clean off the umbrella table. And then plant a few things. It's overcast and supposed to rain; don't know when.

Also need to read stuff online to Tom (yesterday he was feeling jealous of my time at the computer probably because he was bored, but didn't tell me until late in the evening) and let him listen to local historian Dennis Robinson who I just realized is visually impaired. Maybe it will inspire Tom... Dennis Robinson's TEDx Talk

Gotta look at my list again to see what else I need to do today. Supper, at least, is leftovers (chowduh) so I don't have to think about that.

Another move back to some independence. Our bed is high. On top of that we have a Select Comfort bed our dau. gave us - a friend had given it to her and she didn't like it. Rog and I love it.

Any way, with all the troubles since Feb 28, I've not been able to get up on it without Rog's help, then that of a stool. It's been hard for both of us as I had to wake him every time I was up. Last night, I got out and IN BED all by myself!!!

No sleep last night, though...lots of dog turmoil etc., so I slept this morning, got up and had lunch with Rog. I was going to watch an episode of a new fav. on NF "Longmire: but the bills were calling me to finish up. I started at 1p and just ended at 3p and I do not feel tired!

Linn! Up here, office chairs run about a dime a dozen so I would definitely not beat myself over it. Just one more of life's lessons!

I came into the city with R and the young lads this morning. My car! Dropped all off and went to the house and started on the back yard. Went for groceries and a good corn broom. NO good brooms available. Maybe in the country. Had lunch and went back at the yard - for about 4 hours? I pulled weeds and cut the long grass with the scissors; could not bring scythe in with a car full.

Got it mostly done and mowed that part. The left over gravel/stones from when it was a horse stable get caught in mower. Need to do a great deal more work on stone removal. Did around the herb bed and trimmed the sage to keep from flowering. And along both flower beds so all looks a bit tidier. Next time I come in, I will bring the plants which I still have no place for at the Mill.

On Sunday, beautiful day, I checked the spot where I hoped I could plant but the soil is too shallow. It is a ramp that was constructed for trucks. I pulled up sumac babies, yards of roots - on the ramp and along the bottom. And weeded around some red osier dogwood we will keep and add to. They are invasive but this is a good place for them. Eventually, someone will mow around the flower beds to be.

Hmmm. Could put the two hosta there and edge it with some of the timbers lying around. It WAS a saw mill! Lots of wood at hand. That would be a good place for the great celandine. Need low maintenance. And I have an extra prostrate broadleaf evergreen, I can dig up and take down. (Can't remember what it's called!) Someone gave me several 3 years ago and they are taking over the world!

Now I am trying to dredge up energy to go visit friend in hospital and then go folk dancing on Mount Royal. This is iffy. Need to get back to the cabin tonight and feed the kits. Need to spend a couple days in the pottery. Anyway, I have had some good exercise.

Good news, Kat! I have a latex mattress that was an extra (long story) after my ex ordered one and ended up with three. He warned me that it took some getting used to, but after about 2 weeks I was accustomed to the different feel of it and it is very comfortable. No way I could move this by myself, though - it's on a frame and box spring and won't budge off them .

Getting hot this week. I need to mow tonight and be ready for the hot weather to descend. More indoor tasks will become interesting as it gets really hot (up to 100o by the end of the week.)

Today I went online and scheduled a pickup by the Salvation Army for a sofabed loveseat. I've also listed two miscellaneous boxes - they don't exist yet but I'll have a couple of weeks to assemble stuff because the first appointment I can get for pickup is in the end of June.

I actually believe this malady is gearing down to naught. One month, same as last year. Maybe we need to leave the area next year during this season.

Very glad to hear Kat is doing better!

I saw my friend at hospital but still in a coma so I just talked at him for a few minutes and went back to car. As I walked back down the hill to where I had parked - perspiring, I thought I would just check out how to get to the folk dancing for another time. But instead of going up the mountain, my car went down toward the hghwy so I came to the cabin in time to feed the kits before too dark. A good thing! They have been in a squirrel cage and had discovered the neat squirrel house. I had to help each of them out of the house, gently pulling their fat tummies through the hole! Tomorrow will be clean the big cage day! The house is OUT of the cage and I put a wooden box and straw in for tonight.

Feeding time was a circus. I added pablum to the bowls and the two who usually eat from the bowls said, "YICK!" So one chewed on my foot and the other munched on a nipple and managed to ingest formula at the same time I was holding bottles for the other two! Then Serena pooped on my lap - again. Eventually everyone seemed content and I put them to bed, took a hot bath and collapsed. I am glad my car decided not to go dancing.

So Michelle is getting things done while I am mesmerized by the soporific effect of constant, fairly heavy rain falling through the trees onto the roof. And not wanting to start my day because that means going out in that rain to gather the four kits for their morning meal I have had brekkie but am stuck on the computer. But I weary of it and shall soon brave the rain, having checked the weather report to find it is just going to keep on....

And the big cage must be made useful as I just had word that someone wants to pick up the squirrel cage in a day or so. One less thing for us to move!! YAY!

There are a few days after I mow the back yard that I love to spend some time admiring it. This may be the last week of a "park like" look because the temperatures are supposed to rise and it will soon turn brown. I water about 1/3 of the yard closest to the house to give the dogs a green area to roll around in, but the rest dries up.

I'd forgotten that there is stuff in the garage that never sold in a garage sale a year+ ago, but I spotted it yesterday when I was trying to find where the dogs might have found a toy that they dragged out and chewed up. The rest of that bin of stuff can go in one of the Salvation Army boxes.

I've been threatening to move my office desk (computer, wires, peripherals, etc.) but this week I'm really going to do it. As it is I'm sitting directly under the light fixture in the ceiling and I'm tired of having bugs attracted to the light then dropping onto my head.

My three dogs cornered a live skunk in the garage last night.

Just think about all of the ramifications that go with that discovery this morning. The skunk is now out, driven out of the corner after I opened the door and used a hose and the nozzle on "jet."

Yes, it has been a busy stinky morning. I have been at work for a little while, but I can still smell it on my hands and will head back to the house soon to start spraying enzyme around the garage and on the dogs again. They did get skunked this time. Thoroughly.

I've been moving the last of my sewing things/table upstairs into what WILL be my sewing room (can you say disaster area?). I have 2 more trips to make and will be done with the moving part of it. Dishes are going, one load of laundry done, counter and table is clean. I have another load of dishes to go, maybe two. I am going to start using the pressure canner to make our own baked beans so I'll have a load of jars to sterilize. Company is coming in 45 minutes and I still haven't had a shower and am exhausted. I am NOT in the mood for company today. UGH. And the person coming KNOWS I am NOT in the mood. I'm sure she is wanting to cheer me up but right now I just want to be left alone.

Arg. On to the shower.

Gawd...

No skunks encountered here, thank goodness. (One very early summer morning a few years ago I stood just outside the back door enjoying the just slightly post dawn weather when I spied a movement to my left, amidst the flower pots. Almost entirely white skunk. I stood still. He warily wove his way through the planters, waddled past me (casting an eye in my direction...just in case), and down the steps to "safety" under the deck.)

I just finished a bunch of piddly things including (believe it or not) yet more paperwork (that I found while trying to straighten the pile on the table that the cat keeps wanting to knock over) that had to be filed. Elderly property tax exemption -- yes, we're still old. Yes, we still have an income well below the maximum for the exemption. Had to go out to the car to note mileage for the form -- 191,882 miles on our sole vehicle.

Got other stuff filed. Threw out a bunch of stuff. Need to email a friend who wanted to buy the carnelian necklace to see if she's got the money yet. And another friend about the black powder pistol. Read Tom a number of things at Mudcat and Facebook and took care of some PMFF board business emails. Decanted the Earl Grey tea-infused vodka. It still needs to age a bit more. Also finished preparing the maple/vanilla-infused vodka. This is one way I can have the occasional sip of a specialty liqueur without having to pay an arm and a leg (and a kneecap and two toes). After supper the dishwasher will be full enough to run through.

Oh, and I pulled a few more weeds and put some more dry leaves on the pile when I took out the kitchen compost. Now I've got to get the mail and do a quick store run and take some magazines to Lee Urgent Care.

I had hoped to make a dent either in "the room" or the stuff piled in front of the hutch... I had also hoped we'd be able to eat on the deck tonight, but the promised sun hasn't put in an appearance. Sigh.

oh happy day! It stayed sunny long enough for me to clean out the big cage and clear a lot of other stuff to be moved - sorting, throwing out dead boxes (saved from last move but raccooned), general triaging. The kits were so excited by all the activity that instead of going to sleep after early meal, they watched Mom work. So I moved them to their new home and cleaned out the squirrel cage so it is ready for pick up! As I worked I noticed the guys exploring their new home and ----WOW! saw little jaws chewing the dog food left from the last big guy feeding! YAY! Put some of their new puppy food in and a few minutes ago, while putting things inside away from the new rainfall, All four were at the feeding tube munching away! And really neat - one was crawling through the tube. They can take the food out with their hands but HEY! tubes are fun! See why I do this?

Had an email last eve from a francophone requesting raccoon help so I gave him R's phone; R went and picked up Bandit and kept him in the city house last night - loose! Could not find him this am. Oh well! I expect he will resurface when he is ready. Hopefully, I will bring him out here in the morning to join his foster sibs.

Laundry and recycling are in the car, ready to go to the city, after the eve feeding. Boxes in the house, ready to be packed. Trying to get all non-essentials packed and gone SOON. Made black bean salsa/soup and more choc covered ginger. Dragged smaller squirrel cage out of porch and cleaned it out; it will be rain washed. Detailed email sent to a potter who requested info on magnesium and joints. Emails all read and a few brief responses. Maybe I will take a nap until feeding time, or just read.

Oops, need to get the 5 tomato plants in the car.

Thanks, Dorothy - Those skunk recipes (I've tried them) stick around like a burr on your sock, but they don't work. They never have. Tomato juice on a dog - it's a waste of tomato juice. Peroxide, soap, etc, it doesn't break down the protein that is so stinky and sticks so well. It washes some off but it takes several baths and never works completely. And it can bleach the dogs' coats in the process.

The only thing that works, and it works very well, is the enzyme product called Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor Remover. PetSmart has discontinued it, I was in two stores today and there was none to be found. I had to go to Petco. You don't get the dogs wet to use this, that makes the skunk oil with it's own special stickiness spread around. You must be careful not to hit the eyes, but I put some of the liquid in an ordinary spray bottle and spritz the dogs on the muzzle, chest, neck, forehead and ears. Skunks aim for the face and they have two sprayer glands and can aim at two different animals at the same time. I also sprayed the legs and front feet this time. I'll check them in a few minutes (I was starving so I've stopped to have a banana and strawberry smoothie before heading outside.) I'm going to put some of this in my 2 gallon sprayer and pump it up and spray around the garage. And give the dogs another spritz with the small bottle.

There are lots of enzyme products out there now - I found a janitorial service years ago that supplied some that was good for the smell in the carpet and concrete from the cat peeing in the corner, and now you can find it from Nature's Miracle and several other companies. I think any company wanting in the skunk game could probably come up with something similar.

Dorothy, skunks are amazingly gregarious when dogs aren't around. They don't want to spray everything they see. I've had them in campgrounds panhandling around the campsite! If raised from a very young age they make interesting pets, but they still can bite. And some people who have them as pets I hear don't have them stink-gland fixed. There are tons of pet skunk videos on YouTube.

;-D Those pronouns get me more often than other part of speech. This is a fasting day and the smoothie was going to be my main small meal. I figured all of the skunk smell might be easier to tolerate with some food in my stomach. As it turns out, no smoothies needed for the dogs. As I went out to spray them just as they raced off away from me, around the greenhouse to the fence. My next door neighbor came out with a treat for them (he was out of dog biscuits so gave them each a piece of chicken.) We all had food in our stomachs as I set to work to spritz them with the enzymes.

I need to do another spray on each dog - this evening I'll roll each of them over and check for any hot skunk spots that I missed earlier. I figure if they were dancing around in the garage when they got sprayed they might have rubbed it off on each other beyond the usual skunk target areas. By morning I hope they'll all be back to normal dog smell. This weekend I'll wash the garage floor.

My first husband and I had a young Mephitus mephitus back in the '70s. A neighbor had come to Ed (since he had small animal experience) to remove the skunk from under another neighbor's porch since the animal officer, the fire department and the police refused to.

We kept him awhile as a semi-pet (in the shed, not in the house). Skunks don't spray other skunks and he just figured we were big skunks. Kept the bug population down in the garden.

My big old house has 3 porches, so skunks are often close neighbors. I much prefer them to opossums, raccoons, squirrels, or rats and I don't have a dog. But they do spray each other in February when they're fighting for love. It's a clear sign that spring is "in the air." :-) A stroll around the neighborhood at dusk will probably include a few skunk sightings, and they're pretty mellow about cars, pedestrians, and cats.

We let the skunk know we're around and he's cool with that. He seems to have a few 'dens', one of which is under the porch/veranda. He doesn't spray near the house unless it's to drive off a cat or raccoon or human who tries to get too friendly.

Normally all our canning is during the summer when it's hot however nothing in our garden is ready to can yet so I decided to do baked beans on this unusually cool, very rainy day. They are just about ready to go in the canner! Prep is easy but takes time.

I also received a call from a young man who I've known for a long, long time. He and his girlfriend just found out they are pregnant...haven't told their parents yet...he asked me to come over and talk with them. They had a list of questions and I am honored that he trusts me and feels comfortable asking some serious questions. She is a doll and even though they are young, I am happy for them. :) I think they are going to be just fine.

Also, just sold Jeremiah's little swing set (didn't even have to advertise!) so there is an extra little bit of money sitting on the table. :) That's always a good thing!

That's the reason I absolutely refuse to can ANYTHING. Bad bad Wisconsin August childhood memories of Mom standing over the pressure cooker, the excess humidity dripping from the ceiling, the Braves' game on the radio on top of the refrigerator, my dad shuffling the cards at the table for yet another game of solitaire, pinochle, cribbage...

I don't can. I don't play cards. And I don't follow baseball (or any other organized sport).

Went to the city after the kits supper yesterday. Did two loads of laundry and met our new resident. Poor little guy had already had two foster homes and was a bit snarly and very skittish. This morning, I packed up the car for return trip, including Bandit. Realized I could not safely go shopping with him in car - fear of being caught. It is legal to kill raccoons but not to care for them. Need to go out tomorrow and scavenge for goat milk! (Cow milk is not healthy for them.)

At lmorning mealtime, I brought only one kit in to introduce Bandit to his new sibs. Addie, the shy one, drank her bottle with fervour! I managed to squirt some milk in Bandit's mouth. His mode of eating was to put both feet in a bowl of mill and then lick the milk off his feet! Highly inefficient and he spills lots! Bandit snarled at Addie and she just looked at him. This was nose to nose!

Then I took Addie out and brought in the other 3. Everyone got fed and no great traumas so I took the 3 out and then took Bandit out. Like two year olds, there was parallel play going on and no one tried to harm anyone. Everyone was munching away on the puppy food so Bandit did too. How better to learn but by observation. Supper went fine, in shifts of two and then 3. Bandit and Addie were in the same nest box. Bonding!?

I managed to get some boxes packed and out to the porch. Made up a sort of moving schedule which made it look less daunting. As the space at the Mill will be almost indoor camping, I am hoping to move all but the bare essentials ahead of time and then one last large truck load for bed, frig, love seat, table, two chairs, one wheel, one kiln and sundry. (I'm thinking out loud.)

We really like it here and do not want to leave.

I have a bunch of stuff to put out at the curb for trash on Monday. I'll start piling it outside the garage (can't put at the curb until the night before). In some cases I'm tossing things that I thought had a use, but have decided not to try to use - there are too many of those projects around here.

This morning I put a comfortable pair of Capri pants back into service. I can't seem to get past this plateau I've been on lately, but I still have lost some inches. The old fat/muscle dichotomy for dieters. I can see muscles reappearing but I'd rather have muscles and be 30 pounds lighter, not be buff at this weight. :)

The dog/skunk story is still playing out. The dogs are much better (though Poppy seems to have gotten skunked in some odd spots so every so often I give her a sniff and spray another area.) To de-skunk the building I've run a couple of batches of soapy water across the garage floor and the area where the standoff seems to have taken place. It is decreasing in strength, but is still quite apparent.

Those projects we think we will get to! I have a whole pile next to the sewing machine.

My weight loss has stopped also but I am dealing with the stress of moving and not pushing the diet thing.

I have lots of boxes packed and some huge clear plastic bags for clothes and such. Probably two car loads. After the feeding, I ate again in hopes of energy. Never works. Trying to figure out how to get out of loading the car and taking it to the Mill when the bright sun disappeared and RAIN fell! AHH! but it only lasted a few minutes and now I am back to "It's almost 3 pm and I still have time for at least one trip..."

All 5 kits were in the hammock this am and not ready for brekkie until about 1 pm! All the food was gone from the tube; this indicates that last year's four are still coming back; They can reach through the wire and help themselves! We will be putting the less expensive adult food in at night! Also explains why the kits are so tired. Imagine the excitement of BIG raccoons right there! I did the feeding in shifts: 2 and then 2 and then Bandit, who is starting to like the bottle. He cannot suck yet but chews on the nipple while I squeeze the bottle to squirt it into his mouth. He took quite a reasonable amount. He let go when he had enough.

Realizing that driving 1-2 hours/day and feeding 2 hours/day is a big chunk of time. Add in 2 or more hours on emails and other internet stuff....

Almost 3 pm. Will I or won't I? I will walk out to the post box. Now.

WELL, NOW IT IS 4:30 and I packed a couple more boxes and checked a few more emails and singed a couple more petitions - and ate a few pieces of dark choc.

But I did not load the car and drive to the mill because I just do not feel like it. Tomorrow is a big day: Farmer's Market in the am and a major local music event starting at 3 pm with an incredible lineup of musicians - and taking my pottery. Sunday, I will unload the pottery stuff at the Mill.

R and crew just removed an entire kitchen, including appliances, from a ad on Craigslist. I cannot remember whether it was free of cheap but it is on its way to the Mill so we may yet have a K before we move there. Regardless of how it fits the available space.

And R will make it to Bobby Dove's CD launch tonite at the Cafe!

Now I am going to organize what is in the way of real life and go to the Cafe early.

I cleared out the clutter in the corner behind the door to the sun room. The big video game cabinet that is my son's (long story) will be pushed into his room after the love seat comes out (the one that the Salvation Army will pick up in two weeks.) That will allow me to make better use of the sun room. As a gardener there are some things I hold onto because I know I'll need them later. Like the flat boxes from the grocery store that come under cases of vegetables - I use those for drying and holding all sorts of things from the garden. And I use all sorts of plastic containers for repotting and giving away plants, etc. But they can stand to be stored neatly. That will happen in the space behind the door, where I will move a potting bench that kind of blocks access to my plants in the bay window now.

Okay. I decluttered a lamp. It's in the bag for Goodwill. And sold a repro black powder pistol yesterday.

But then I got to the Press Room session. Not long after I got there, Chris Vaughan came in the back door and tugged at my sleeve -- "There's a bunch of posters in the trash out there..."

So I went to look. Evidently someone decided to clean out Jay Smith's (founding owner of The Press Room; sold the pub in 1996) entertainer files from the '80s. They were out back in a plastic box and wet from last night's rain. Not too wet. But I went through them and salvaged everything that had meaning for me -- press kits, posters, publicity photos. A treasure trove as far as my archives are concerned -- people that I had seen at The Press Room in the early '80s but didn't have a date on my calenders for. Walking On Air, Trapezoid, Bill Morrissey, Sammie Haynes (now married to Cormac McCarthy), Jane Rothfield and Alan Carr, Taylor Whiteside, Richard Johnson, Kenny Girard, John Roberts and Tony Barrand, Rick and Lorraine (now married to Bennett Hammond) Lee, Jim Ringer and Mary McCaslin, etcet etcet...

Wow!

Guess I'd better de-accession some more stuff to make room. (Actually, it's not that thick a stack.)

Gotta go eat pizza...

Good save, Linn!

I've lugged more stuff out to the trash, took a load of recycling down the to village bins, moved the love seat from my son's room into the den (it involved turning it on its back and then putting it on end to get around a sharp hall corner - good thing it isn't that heavy and I didn't ever have to lift it off the floor, just tipped it). Since any large cardboard pieces in the garage will now smell like skunk I'm going to have to find another piece to use to slide the video game through the house and down the hall into the place where the loveseat used to sit.

A load of laundry is going in at bedtime with the timer set to run the load at 5am when the power is cheaper and in less demand. We're reaching the time of year when they'll start telling us to use not use large appliances during the heat of the day.

I was away from the computer all day and have only turned it on tonight after moving my computer desk and rearranging the USB hubs behind my monitor. I have two 7-port hubs to support all of the cables. A whole bunch of them are device cables that don't need the powerful links (several camera cables, mp3 player, phone cable, etc.)

Of course though what I intended the desk move, I didn't start there. I sorted through several boxes of papers in the office closet to clear the floor in case I needed to move any of the equipment to the closet. In the process I pulled out my Dad's old APC battery backup and read the booklet - I'll put that in service if I can buy a replacement. Otherwise, it's e-trash and will go to the bin at work.

Now I can see the floor in the closet AND I can move behind my computer desk easily to see all of the wires and cables. No more crawling on my hands and knees with a flashlight to reach the cables. This was the kind of job that involved frequently running the vacuum cleaner and shredder.

On a health note, I ran into an artificial sweetener this week that has the same effect as nutrasweet - it causes diarrhea a couple of hours after consumed. I accidentally got into it via a sports drink. Acesulfame potassium is often times combined with aspartame in foods and drinks - maybe this is what was always getting me. I suspect they're using just this and not also nutrasweet because people are onto nutrasweet. And now they need to be onto this stuff.

So...gloves on hands (should have worn the rose gauntlets) and lopper in my hands, I headed down what was once a path heading downhill behind the flower bed behind the house. Pulled out leaf litter, lopped grapevinage that was threatening takeover, took down some saplings and majorly cleared out blackberry thornage.

Great exercise, by the way. Especially exerting one's self while balancing on steep uneven ground (ALL of our yard is uneven ground and then some of it is steep, too). Then I hauled the thorn bushes up to the deck where I sat on the steps and cut it all into short pieces and bagged in a trash bag to go out (AWAY!) in Tuesday's trash.

Then I planted and potted a few things, cut some roots sticking out above the driveway, crawled up on the bank and thinned some hemlock branches and American basswood suckers and threw previously cut brush down on the pile.

Then I made lunch. (And the dishes in the dishwasher were done.)

Think I'll wrap up the song list on the Press Room shanty sing thread, do some necessary online research and then maybe put enough clothes away that I can get a change of sheets and pillowcases and change the bed (which is waaay more complicated than you think, since I use the bed as a desk and what would be Tom's side if he were sleeping upstairs is piled with binders, notebooks, papers, the phone, books, magazines and page protectors).

By the way, I'm closer to getting my "new" car -- he ended up having to replace the catalytic converter, too (single most expensive part on the car) and was having the car cleaned & waxed Friday. I don't think he's going to make a cent on it, but I'll have what is a practically new 2002 Outback. The engine was rebuilt and a bunch of other working (and non-"working" like the bumpers) parts have been replaced.

Linn, I detect a technique similar to mine re: changing-the-linens: I didn't get the laundry basket folded last week so yesterday when I changed the sheets I pulled a set out of the clean laundry still in the basket and made the bed. And had a lot less left to fold. :)

I made progress while Mudcat was offline. I recycled 20-30 pounds of paper (a big chunk of it was old notebooks from graduate school classes that I will never look at again, and old term papers.) Now I need to arrange the few things I'm going to keep, and I may be able to remove a large set of wire shelves from that closet. Or use the wire shelves more efficiently by putting other things in there that I want to keep but don't need to keep in plain sight.

An eBay box out the door, a couple of other items relisted.

Still looking at the office closet, and ready to start another box of stuff to donate. And from here at the computer I'm also looking up at a shelf with small floppy disks that I need to convert to CDs while I still have a computer in the house that can read the things. I'll recycle the floppies after I move the files.

I have another batch of clothes that are too large and will go to the Goodwill. That will clear a chair in the bedroom where it has been accumulating.

A load of small throw rugs has just finished washing.

Ach! What a morning!

First off, I poured some of the half and half I just bought on Saturday into Tom's coffee...and it curdled. Tom wouldn't accept either ice cream or powdered milk in his coffee. I was going to go right out and exchange it (would take about 40 minutes), so Tom decided he could stand to drink a cup black if he had cinnamon rolls to go along with it. So...that's what we had for breakfast.

Then I figured I could do everything in one trip. Since the half and half was no longer an emergency, I could go first to Lee Urgent Care about my toe. I did something nasty to it in the past two weeks, but it only hurt when I walked up or down stairs. Then yesterday I teetered on so much steep slope and tricky uneven footing that I did something else to it. Starting last night I had tingly feelings extended down into the ball of the foot and some general weirdness. I've had broken toes before and there's not much you can do for them except avoid kicking things, and was intending to tape it to the next toe and get on with life, but it was bothering me more this morning and I figured I'd better get it checked out.

Left the house at 9:40 this morning and JUST GOT HOME (to make "lunch") at 2:30. (Picked up lunch fixings and a few grocery items and exchanged that sour half and half on the way home.) Spent almost four hours at Lee Urgent Care -- for a ligamentous sprain (not even a break), x-rays, and the advice to buddy tape the toe and take some ibuprophen... (And a VERY LARGE MARGARITA, I think! ...after I pick up Tom's meds at the pharmacy.)

Zero accomplishment today (except for the half book I read while waiting). Lucky I carry a book with me...

Tom just told me I don't have to pick up the meds today. So I think I'll take 1996 out to the umbrella table on the deck and interpolate the info in the binder with the dates in the calendar. AND sip a large margarita...

Fri: passed on old copies of Mariposa Notes to a friend who is not yet de-cluttering. The free kitchen cupboards are quite nice. Also the frig and stove! And the woman thanked R profusely for taking them! She can now put in a new Kitchen in her newly purchased condo. We can have some semblance of a decent K at the Mill. A definite win-win.

Saturday: Sold 3 pots at the Market -$60 - not bad. I am happy when I make the booth fee! We drove up to the cabin and fed the kits and ourselves and OOPS, I left my cell phone plugged in down at the Market site. So we drove back down - it was not where I left it - and back to the cabin. Nothing for it but to carry on. So we went to the big music event, very late (it started at 3). But did not miss ALL the good music and left about 11 when the sound was cranked up to a painful level.

Sunday: took the carload of pottery to the Mill. Then I drove back to the cabin and loaded the car with those packed boxes, had a visit with a couple trying to determine if the squirrel cage would be suitable for their foster kids, had lunch and went back to Mill. I was feeling not so good so I did not feed the kits. About 5 pm, I got a message from sis-i-law that a woman had phoned her - in PA! - re my cell phone. We drove to her home and R recouped the phone with profuse thanks! She had come out of her office just in time to hear a couple kids on bikes, "Oh look, a phone!" Lucky me!

Cool and rainy but I sat in front of open door because I was afraid paint fumes would make me sick. I felt myself going down hill and went and sat in the car. (R was working trying to get the place in order, as he does every chance.)

At 9:57, I phoned R to see if he could quit. I was no longer able to even read. We got back to the cabin about 11. I was a whimpering mass of protoplasm, told R he would have to feed the kits and I crawled into bed shivering. Alkyd paint. An hour later, I was burning hot and my feet were ice. The poor little kits were frantically hungry and R was afraid to open the door to the cage for fear someone would get lost in the dark. He held the bottle to the fence until everyone seemed to have had enough to calm down. He was well bitten by mosquitoes and rained upon at same time!

Today we fed the kits before we left and came to city where I am feeling back to a low level of energy - instead of none! As soon as the second load of laundry is dry, I will put the other two loads (one wet) in the car and go back to the cabin. So I can recoup enough for the eve feeding.

Curses! Foiled again!

By the time I wrapped up what had to be done (a returned phone call), it was pouring and the deck was out of the question.

Sigh. It was sooooo beautiful out until I got home again and it clouded right up.

Did finish the work on 1996, though. Then watched an episode of "White Collar" (alas, not one of the better ones).

I'm exhausted. Dinner revised again. Not enough energy to make kedgeree. I'm not sure I have enough energy to put some frozen scallop cakes in the oven. Besides, we didn't eat lunch until 3:00! I just put cheese inside some packaged crescent rolls and put them in the oven. Hope I can keep my eyes open.

Sounds like a couple of our members needed to get to bed early tonight.

I've made forward progress here, though the house is still messy. I made some small pizza crusts for myself that are now in the freezer for meals this summer, and I have a few more things in the truck to go for e-waste. I have clean rugs in the dryer and I have only a few dirty dishes in the kitchen sink. :)

It rained hard this morning, saving me having to drag hoses (I am only allowed to use a sprinkler on Wednesday and Saturday, but I can use soaker hoses or hand water any time).

It sounds like my son is getting to see his aunt (my sister) in Seattle every so often, and our brother will be back up there soon (he has homes in California and Washington). And my son will be joining them at a family wedding (our cousin's daughter) in August - a chance for a whole bunch of people to get to meet him. If ever you're going to a new place where technically you might feel like a stranger, what a revelation it must be to have family popping up everywhere.

Didn't sleep well last night - went to bed as a thunderstorm was passing over the area. Let the dogs in. They couldn't seem to get comfortable - the bed they sleep on in the living room isn't cool in this weather so I think two of them slept on the tile floor. Stubborn Cinnamon insisted on sleeping on her bed on the foot of my bed. The skunk smell wasn't so bad but she farted all night. Try getting a 55 pound dog off of a bed she doesn't want to leave and she suddenly weighs a ton. I considered leaving her there and going to sleep in my son's room, but finally fell asleep (or the gas knocked me out?).

I spent most of yesterday poking around 3 large thrift shops. I ended up spending about $20.00. I think I did pretty good. For Jeremiah I got a shorts set, dress pants (from The Children's Place) for fall holidays/church, a short sleeved button up Hawaiian shirt (that he picked out..it's covered in palm trees and jeeps..FUN) and a toy car. For myself, I got two books (sold new for $23.00 each) and two very small vases for the constant little handfuls of flowers that Jeremiah brings me. And the big find of the day, I picked up 2 three foot tall plastic, primary colored, sets of drawers. Each one has 3 deep and wide drawers. I spent this morning cleaning each of them. Jeremiah and I dumped the toys from the 2 Huggies boxes he's been keeping everything in, sorted things out and organized things by drawers. Later today I will make visual labels for each drawer (words too). We have 2 drawers of cars, trucks, tractors and scooters. A drawer for train things (tracks, bridges, engines, cars), a Lego and blocks drawer, a drawer for little animals, men and random small toys and finally a drawer to keep his tractor magazines and some books. :) He is having fun driving his cars along the top and sides of the shelving. :) The colors don't match my living room but so what? It's a much nicer way to keep his toys and should help in keeping them cleaner as well (no dust or dog hair inside the drawers!).

I have laundry going and dishes that need to be done (of course). It's never ending in that department but I try to keep in mind that this means we have had food for our bellies and clean clothes on our backs. I remember not being able to stand long enough to do dishes so I will NOT complain! :)

I'm off to putter.

Have a great day everybody!

I have an opportunity to work some overtime (for real, not the uncompensated sort I worked last spring) - on the overnight shift in the library. Not sure how it would work - I would need to go sleep after working overnight, not put in 8 more hours so that my overnight counted as extra. Sounds like something for one with superhuman stamina. I'm having trouble staying awake at 2:45 in the afternoon!

I'm planning to do more work on the sunroom this evening and have researched the various furniture dollys at Home Depot. I need to put something under the game cabinet to move it into my son's room. I have lots of large furniture in the house but have so far gotten away without owning a dolly. It's either a sign of age or common sense that I'm going to add one to my tools.

It rained this morning so I don't need to fuss with the garden except to pick. I do need to restring both of my trimmers and have them ready to go for the next time I mow. That is less frequent as the heat rises - and sometimes a quick run over stall spots with the string trimmer means I don't need to get out the mower.

Today at work I dropped more stuff in the e-waste bin. It really is astonishing how much I had around the house; things I kept for some reason or other. Today it was old holiday lights, a not-quite-perfect computer keyboard that needs a mouse-plug adapter - into the bin.

Two good sleeps, a lazy day and 3 hot baths plus NAC for the toxin removal and I am feeling human again. Hung the third load of laundry on the line and took it down and all laundry put away and a car load taken to the Mill and offloaded. Put up posters for the music fest a couple places and the last one gave me stuff to deliver to organizers - donation, door prizes - so I went home by their place and had a visit. Delighted to hear that our friend has come out of coma. Great news!

Fed kits about noon and tried about 7 but they were not interested. The "fifth wheel" also came in for a bottle and is less snarky and better settled into the family. I let his former people know. Once a day is a bonus for us. They fill up on puppy food. Remembered to put food in the tube for the night visitors.

Cooked a big pan of stir-fried veggies for supper and had them with some melted cheese. Cooked some lentils and stirred in some of the veggies for tomorrow.

My health consultant was appalled that we used this toxic paint but we never realized how bad it is and how long it lasts. Someone suggested a coat of low VOC primer. I will put the screened tent up for a sitting place, maybe even sleeping. A frightful mess, this paint.

I picked up a dolly at Home Depot to use under the big video game in the corner behind my sunroom door. In the process of moving it I realized there were castors on the back side for tipping it and was moving it down the hall but it hung up on the edge of a tile and I ended up dropping it. No, I didn't smash anything, but if I hadn't been carefully to the side of it I'd have broken a foot.

When it went down the insides went all to pieces. I sent my son (who has had it stored here for several years) that it was beyond repair and I was going to drag it to the curb. I am sure he'll be disappointed, but we can find him another some day, if he really needs one. There is a sign on it that says "Free. Needs Repair." If someone can get it picked up into a truck they can have it. I'm sorry to have broken it, but I'm glad it'll be gone.

It was still at the curb when I left this morning, but if it is still there this evening, I'll take a screwdriver down and open the back to remove the guts (the heavy CRT and the circuit boards). At which time my daughter tells me she wants the cabinet. Now that someone wants it it will probably be gone by the time I get home.

Moonglow is coming down tonight for our summer BLT and it is her dad's birthday, so she's giving him a call and inviting him over to our summer celebration. Maybe they'll enjoy taking apart a video game as part of the evening's activities. I'll have to stash it in the truck and take it up to her, there is no putting it in the garage. I can see my weekend shaping up.

Other than, brekkie, another hot bath (and one last night), the computer and the noon feeding, today is a bust. I looked up adrenal exhaustion and added a couple supplements, looked up non-toxic paint and sent R the link, remonstrated (nicely, I hope, with a potter who denigrated raccoons, and moved one box closer to where it is going. Also checked on pots which STILL need trimming and, happily, are still damp. Thought about the packing I still need to do and went back to bed! Remembered to re-start the distiller, put adult food in the tube for the night visitors, patted heads and came in and washed hands. Thinking I need to replace the minerals lost in perspiration with all these hot baths. I will go do that. What would I do without you guys to keep me thinking?

Went to a memorial gathering down on Plum Island, Massachusetts (across the bridge from Newburyport) today, so, you might say, I didn't really get a lot accomplished.

But we celebrated the life of a man who gave so much to so many people. He always had an amusing observation, great quotation, or a ready song. I discovered that his daughters (Ted always described himself as "Father of Daughters"...but his first male descendant was born in April) didn't know about his collection (probably long gone in his travels since the '80s) of quirky oddities: his Jack and Jackie Kennedy Hallowe'en masks, his Elvis radio. About the radio, he always said, "And the best thing about it, the BEST thing is...it DOESN'T work!"

Got to see and talk to a bunch of people we haven't seen for awhile.

AND I got to drive on a bunch of roads I haven't been on in many years, reminding me of how to get to Newburyport and Plum Island, and all the wonderful cemeteries (I'm a "thanatolithologist") I haven't been in since the '80s when Tom was introducing me to the area. Also got to note all the new development along Rte. 1 through Salisbury, Seabrook, and Hampton Falls and describe it all to Tom who couldn't see it. (And remember, after I was through it, the horrible intersection in Salisbury.)

But tonight I'll sort that treasure I found Friday (now thoroughly dried out) into sleeve protectors with a note about where, when and how I salvaged them. And note which posters were on the back of Press Room schedules so I can photocopy them for inclusion elsewhere in the binders. Told a couple of the performers from that era what I found -- they're glad I've saved the stuff and am archiving it. Bill Perry wants to see the Speed the Plow brochure (he was part of the group) and I got this note from John Perrault -- "Wow--a treasure trove. Takes a woman with a grand vision and grander patience to organize that collection...you're the one to do it."

And on the way home I exchanged the jar of pickles at the store -- neither Tom nor I, no matter what we did to break the seal, could get the top off. (And I almost went into pickle deprivation mode.) I guess that was an accomplishment.

The huge came console was still at the curb this evening so I opened the back and took out the heavy CRT and some of the electronic parts and the wire harness. The case is going up to my daughter's house (she wanted the rest, thought it might be repaired, but I saw how hard it thumbed last night - she would waste time and money on that. She can have the cabinet and they can adapt it for something else.

I also sent her away with a print drawer fully of Goudy lead letters - I hadn't done anything with it since I bought it and she loved it. Seems friends are into this stuff, so I wrapped it in plastic and sent the whole thing, type and all, home with her. It was her dad's birthday (he came over also) but she got all of the loot. They both took stuff from the garden.

There isn't exactly an echo around here, but I am glad to have more gone. Counting the days (9) until the Salvation Army comes for more big stuff.

The tube and wires have been deposited in the e-recycle bin here at work, and I called the office that supplies the bins to come empty it. He said he has been impressed with the volume of stuff we're sending - considering that most of it is coming from my house, he should be amazed at what I've kept over the years. He said he has also cleared out at home, bringing in three old CRT televisions. I still have one, a little combo DVD/TV in my sewing room. It has a converter and I watch it when I'm sewing. That one will probably stick around for a while.

The kitchen was cleared up for dinner last night, a load of laundry was put in, but I realized that though I started it this morning I forgot to put it in the dryer. It won't mildew in one day, but in general I don't like to leave damp laundry in the washer for hours on end.

I've seen PennyS. talking about computers in another thread, looks like she may be decluttering old equipment if she doesn't find the software that will work with the old devices. There isn't a dedicated thread, and I'm not saying we should start one unless she says it is okay, but we heard from Rustic Rebel on the MOAB thread yesterday that her house burned down last month and she lost everything. If she says it is okay we can start a thread and see if people have extra CDs to replace some of the music she lost.

I also completely cleared our kitchen table, wiped it down and will have it set for dinner (the first time in a long time that the table has been really clear). I love it this way...here's hoping to maybe I can keep it that way for longer than last time!

Did basic chores, played outside with Jeremiah, finished a book (added it to the yard sale pile) and have overall enjoyed the day. :)

Thanks, SRS, I will look at that tomorrow. I have read MANY books on the subject of healthy homes. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp has huge sections on line as well. And their man who lectures on the subject, and old friend, came to Bancroft when I was there. He built the first low cost safe housing dev in Canada, a very complex project. They learned as they went along, with the participation of those who would live there.

I certainly should have known better than to let R use the Alkyd paint but my brain is not always functioning at full speed. It was less bad today. We may cover it with a low VOC primer.

Good day. By 10 am I had cleared emails, responding as necessary and had brekkie. Then I loaded the car and went off to the Mill, stopping for groceries en route. Back to cabin and fed critters - 3 of 5 refused bottle. May be weaned? I'll try again tomorrow. Then lunch break. THEN, I washed the bathtub with a paste of baking soda and peroxide - as read on line. It got almost all the orange off (from the orange water) in about 15 minutes! THEN, feeling energized by that success, I went out and braved the horror of all that stuff in the garage. Amazingly managed to package about a third of the mess along one wall - not nearly as daunting as I had feared. Filled car again. Also have a couple piles of boxes of mags and books, by the big door. Still have lots of glaze materials - several hundred pounds! and pottery in various stages on non-completion.

May take time tomorrow, if it is a good day, to trim those pots and see if I have a kiln load. Make more if I can and need. Hopefully, I will be able to pack up more stuff also. Those plastic bins are so much easier for odd stuff; if I need to go into the city, I may buy a few more. May need to fetch R for our Friday night music - dear Bill Garrett!

Starting to feel this move will happen in a timely fashion. Hoping tomorrow is another "good day".

I was talking to a friend today and explaining why I hold onto the large futon in my front room - and have almost talked myself into selling it. Almost. It would make a lot more room around here.

This evening I found more obsolete electronics, they are everywhere! Three portable cassette players - I'll check eBay to see if there is a market (amazing what people still buy) or if they should be donated to Goodwill or go straight to the e-waste bin. I have tons of cassettes still, but will play them through the large player to transfer them to CD or DVD. There is a shelf in my office with several old once-high-end devices that I'll have to take a look at. I may be able to use a few of the larger ones with the computer.

Friday at last. This weekend might mark the time to start picking wild grapes, and it is almost time to make zucchini pickles.

It was a lovely drive north to the next county, entirely on boulevards that are interconnected. The road changes names three or four times but you don't need to do anything to get from one to the next, and it ends up literally a block from her house at the upper end of it. I passed through some of the hallmark landscape of this area, called the "Cross Timbers," tall vine-covered trees that grow atop a north-south running striation of limestone - these dense forests (also called "cast iron forest") that people don't think of when they think of Texas and prairies. I'm in an area that is flatter, more open prairie (if you could still see the land for the houses).

That game cabinet carcass was wheeled into the house by three beefy roommates and put in the corner where it looks right at home, and they were discussing ideas to modify it for use. Good use for it (and she said if her brother wants it back he can just ask.)

One of the roommates will move out in December to go to graduate school, and he'll take his living room futon with him. That serves as their couch, so Moonglow said that come December if I still have my futon she'll have a need for it. Sounds good.

In the last three weeks I've heard about 4 co-workers who live on my side of town - it has been years I'm over here that anyone has been nearby (lots of folks commute from Dallas, others from the part of Fort Worth near to the university, and the lion's share live in Arlington itself). Inspiration to put the house in order and have guests over!

Well...

I de-accessioned a 5-1/2 foot tall inflatable Scotch whisky bottle today...

And I acquired (for free) a nice, solid wood 2-shelf cabinet with a butcher block top. It's temporarily being stored in my neighbor's barn while I figure out what to do with it.

Actually, while getting it out of the back of the car, I made the first decision -- it needs castors. And while telling Tom about it, I figured out where to put it. (Next to the dishwasher, especially after we get that electrical outlet finished.) All I have to do now is empty the dresser that's there now and figure out not only what to do with it, but what to do with what's in the drawers.

Nothing in life is simple...

I finished the work on the sweet potatoes and I did more work on laying out the various soaker hoses. I've given away some produce (tomatoes and eggplant) and tomorrow I'll do some more of it. I need to mow out front and the back, trim, etc. It's getting hot enough now that I won't need to mow as much.

My office is about half-way sorted, so this evening I'll work on the messy side. I found a use for one notebook (full of plastic page cover sheets) in my box of office supplies for the Salvation Army, but the rest of the stuff is ready to go. I need to fill another for pickup next Friday (along with the love seat.)

After a day working in the yard like yesterday I slept hard and woke late. It felt wonderful! If you ever listened to the Covert Bailey lectures (sports medicine topics on PBS) he talked about giving your body a day off between workouts. I'll take it a bit easier out there today. :)

My goal - to have the house looking so good inside and out that I don't need to apologize for the clutter. That'll keep me busy!

Car is emptied of everything but sunglasses, handicapped placards and the spare key, and swept out, wiped down, and bumperstickers removed from the back window. Tomorrow I trade it in on what is, for all practical purposes, a brand new 2002 Subaru Outback. (Even the catalytic converter was replaced.)

My hair is sweat-sopped and my forehead dripping. Got to retrieve the rest of the stuff from the car that I set down on the deck.

Made a large batch of kale and white bean soup with chorizo a little while ago. It's going to be really good for supper, but I rather wish I'd planned vichyssoise or something else cold. Ah well, what I had was kale from the farmers' market, a can of white beans and a ring of chorizo. It'll be good tonight anyway, then I'll freeze it for a more a weather-appropriate time and figure out what more weather-appropriate meal to make tomorrow when it's supposed in the 90s (F.). I think it's only in the 80s today, but it feels like the 90s when you're in a car even with the windows open.

I'm making a grocery run in a few minutes - I'm out of provolone and I'd like a homemade pizza tonight, using one of those small crusts I made last week.

More e-waste has been identified in the office closet, this time, Kodak carousel slide trays. I have extras because I brought some home after a professor cleaned out his office - I still have a lot of slides, but I need to be putting them in archival sheets. The new (to my house) light table is now in the closet on the shelf emptied of slide trays. I brought home two, I may sell one. I also have a metal box with a storage tray for slides that has a bulb and plastic tray - you slide out the storage box and prop up the plastic tray with rows for slides and there is a cord inside also for plugging it in. I could put the slides in that storage box into the archival folders I have now and get rid of that box.

Astonishingly, I found that those portable cassette player recorder devices I stumbled upon yesterday still sell on eBay. As easy as they are to pack and ship, I think I'll list these. I'm consolidating some of the stuff from the closet - either onto the shelves in my office where the music from my dad's estate is stored, or on a small metal shelf that I emptied when I got rid of all sorts of paper. Now that will be all containers of photo prints or slides, plus the projector and few slide trays I am keeping. I've just about re-purposed all of the shelves in that closet, and I'm going to keep everything up off the floor. It looks much larger that way.

It's hot again today, but I'm going out to work soon. I'll mow while it's still bright and before the mosquitoes appear.

Amazing, there is a steady trade in old Kodak carousel slide trays on eBay. I guess I'll throw a few in that direction and see what happens.

I made a lot of progress but I did end up leaving some papers sitting out. But you know how stacks of papers sometimes get dropped in boxes then stacked somewhere else? I went through several of those kinds of boxes that had been stacked in the office closet. I've shredded and recycled many pounds of paper this weekend. Next comes the filing of the things that need keeping.

I found more three-ring notebooks, but it turns out a co-worker can use them, so I'm taking them back to the library tomorrow. :)

I'm formulating long-range moving plans for various sets of shelves and cabinets. Some changes hinge on having a contractor come in and fill the "den" floor with 6" of concrete to level the house to one story. The six inch step down actually counts as a second story on the flood insurance policy. More importantly, it counts as a major impediment to moving around large pieces of furniture. Up and down over one step is a pain in the ass.

There is a shelf in the closet that is a free-standing black wire type, and I have several others in various sizes, all chrome, around the house. With that floor finished I can move a large cabinet from the sun room to the living room and turn my sun room into more of a pantry area. And free up space in the kitchen.

Monday morning dreaming. Working at home today, I'll mow the front at lunch. I got sidetracked and didn't mow yesterday evening as planned.

This morning I'm sorting through many of the papers I brought home from work over the last few years. A lot of it is to be recycled or shredded, some will go back to the office. I expect that in early July our reorganization will be complete and I'll be working at the office most of the time, so I need to get all of this out of my house.

The stack of paper on my secondary work surface is getting lower. I've weeded a lot of my old academic stuff - when I look at it and have no interest in revisiting the topic or in reacquainting myself with all of the background material to bring myself back up to speed, it's time to toss it. I have moved on to different intellectual pursuits. Holding onto everything can slow down that forward movement.

Yesterday was a day of rest - except for computer and reading. Two days of moving totally did me in and I did not do most of the lifting. R and two young lads loaded the trailer, truck and car - more times than I counted. I was not warned of this impending activity and had very little packed in boxes so I was pushed to pack as fast as I could both in house and in studio. Then sat back while they unloaded. Very long days but all a blur. We made it to bed by 1 am.

So yesterday, R went off, in my car, to set the guys to working on stuff at the Mill. At about 11 pm, I phoned and he was just leaving to take them back to the city. Still not back and my checkbooks are in the car and there is a bill that is going to be overdue. I rather wish I had insisted he pick up me and the laundry on the way. Hind sight.

Today I have been packing boxes and more boxes. At least it is cool in the studio and, as long as the door is closed, not many mosquitoes. Very hot day and I kind of wonder at SRS getting things done "before the mosquitoes..." We will not miss the mosquitoes here at the cabin. There is no "before..." They are ubiquitous and constant.

Hopefully, I can have some peace until the last big stuff gets moved on Saturday. If I ever get my car back, I can move what is packed, by the car load. Also get the new tires that are finally in; we now have a not too slow leak in one tire. Carrying a little compressor in the car to keep it from going flat!

It will definitely take me the rest of my life to get sorted out again. As I have packed in order of essentialness, the boxes are now mostly in that order. Realizing that most people move to a place that is more or less ready. I wonder if this will ever be ready. R says they "got a lot done yesterday". Will there at least be a hose to the kitchen? The paint odour is not too bad but I will set up the screen tent so I have a place to be away from fumes, mold and dust.

Mosquitoes don't fly around in 98 degree weather in the middle of the day - they come out as the sun sets and the humidity rises. When it is most comfortable for people, it is most comfortable for mosquitoes.

Tomorrow I'm taking a bucket full of produce to work to "sell" to my coworkers - to support the library association. Last year I contributed about $125 to the fund by taking in produce twice. I did a lot of arm twisting on the big tomatoes last year. :) I'm taking more eggplant this time, a few tomatoes, some potatoes, some peppers. I need to remember make my lunch before I leave the house - a tomato and a cucumber for a salad for me. If it is already made I won't accidentally sell it.

I took some binders and plastic notebook pages (that you slide your paper into) to a coworker who needed them. I don't know if these pages were bought by my for a project I've long since forgotten, or if I brought them home from work to do something I no longer remember. They're now out of the house.

Looking forward to Friday and getting this loveseat out of the way. I have one box of donation stuff, I told them there might be two. I'll have to see if I can find more donatables around here. I found a backpack purse I never use because the design wasn't as good as I hoped for. I could look in that direction - donate clothes and unused handbags. I have a few of those. I bought a couple of women's suits a few months back when I was at the highest weight I'd ever been - it was so depressing to buy women's size 16 that I jumped on the idea of alternate day fasting right after that. I'm now easing into size 12s as some of the 14s become too big. I'll send those two suits to the Salvation Army (and get a tax deduction, to be sure, but they're out of here and can make someone else happy, not make me depressed!)

Dishes and laundry are done. My fridge is bursting with all fresh veggies and fruit. I stopped going to Weight Watchers as my motivation and budget are lacking. I did find a program online that I like where I can track my calories, carbs, protein and fat (it graphs out what I've had each day..pretty interesting....I need to increase my protein by quite a bit apparently). So....my motivation in the weight loss department isn't really lacking, it was more with the WW program. It's not been the same (for me) since they changed to the Points Plus garbage. That just never sat well with me. *Shrug* I continue to be thankful for my body that alerted me to something that was majorly wrong very early...no matter the size. :)

Big storms are headed this way and even more so on Friday (tornado talk is now being discussed for this area...happens every few years). With that being said, I always try to have everything taken care of that involves power. For whatever reason, being stuck with dirty dishes for days on end (due to lack of power/water) makes me cringe in a big way.

The annual yard sale is looming ever closer and I seem to keep seeing things around here that I no longer need or use. I wonder what the heck I was thinking when I purchased some of this stuff. Crazy. Pete and I were talking just this morning about how much our shopping habits have changed. I don't think I've been to the nearest mall in well over 2 years. I haven't bought anything at full retail (meaning I hit the thrift shops/yard sales) in a long time (unless it's groceries/toiletries/cleaning stuff). The exception might be about a month ago when I spent $150.00 on new fans for the house. They were a NEEDED and WANTED item. Even my fabric addiction has been put on hold until I use up a good portion of what I have (exception..MAJOR sale in Mifflinburg coming up and I've been saving all my change for a YEAR for this event). Perhaps some wrapping of coinage will be in my future for later this afternoon.

The county wide cancer survivor celebration is taking place in a restored theater this evening. Jeremiah and I are going. Both of us in ovarian cancer awareness garb. Jeremiah has a little white t-shirt that sports a teal awareness ribbon and says, "I Wear Teal For My Mommy."   My shirt is white and has a teal awareness ribbon and says, "Supporting Those Who Are Fighting, Admiring the Survivors and Honoring the Taken." Add multiple pins and teal bracelets and you'll have me! :)

Have a great day everybody!

Yesterday was Tom's and my 31st wedding anniversary and the weather was very similar to that day 31 years ago -- overcast, very humid, scattered showers until it settled into some serious rain -- except 31 years ago it was reversed.

So I didn't get much accomplished around the house unless you count trying to extricate the meat from a very hard shelled lobster before breakfast so I could make the lobster salad (and get into the fridge for the flavors to marry before dinner) for lobster rolls. Lots of meat in that 1-1/2 lb. lobster, though, making it an even more economical splurge. Got two rolls apiece out of it with enough salad left for a lunch today of one each, so that 7 buck lobster equalled about $78 worth of lobster rolls if we'd eaten them at a restaurant. Our anniversary champagne is pricing itself out of our budget as well -- settled for a Spanish cava that was okay but not great. (And this reminds me that I have to write it into our anniversary book -- I've dated and saved our 2 anniversary corks a year for the past 32 years; we celebrate two anniversaries a year -- our wedding anniversary and the anniversary of the night we met and then, a year later, decided to marry.)

Took Tom for his first ride in my "new" car to Newick's on Great Bay for buck oysters for lunch. Alas, his vision yesterday was so bad he really couldn't get a decent look at the car, even from the inside. Then we went to Flag Hill Winery for a tasting and my birthday 25% off one bottle. And I've VERY pleased to find that they've brought back Niagara from native grapes, a lovely fruity white that, to me, is the taste of summer.

So I'm making up today for my "sloth" (holiday!) of yesterday: laundry in, stack of weekly papers gone through, have to use up the last of the rhubarb by making another batch of cream cheese rhubarb bars. Later I have to do a bunch of errands (getting duplicate keys for the car, farmers' market for CSA share, picking up a gift card I should have received last week, etc.) over in the Exeter area.

Getting some stuff back into the car (and out of the living room!), too, today.

Just emptied the kitchen compost -- it's not just tickland out back, but mosquitoland as well, but the combination of tea tree oil and water that I sprayed on my feet and legs seemed to keep the mossies at bay, as well.

That lobster sounds great - I'm not a huge eater of it, it's a very rich seafood (or so it seemed, last time I ate very much of it). It's wonderful when you can make the specialty dishes yourself. I often order things in restaurants until I'm satisfied I've nailed all of the ingredients and can make it myself, then the next few times out I order some new thing I want to figure out how to make.

Working at home tomorrow so the Salvation Army folks can come by for the loveseat. It will be nice to not have to avoid it (I moved it to the living room myself so they don't have to go all over the house.) I have a box of office supplies and this evening I'm going to hang up and photograph those two womens' suits and add them to a box along with some other dress items I never use or no longer fit into.

This afternoon I finished work on a July meeting and reception, but it pushed something I want to work on back till tomorrow. Darn.

Homarus americanus is one of the major reasons I moved to New England. I love lobster but now, even at "close to the boat" prices, we don't have it often. Definitely don't order it out at restaurant prices. It's sacrilege to do more than boil it and add butter or mayo. A bit of finely chopped lettuce if you add mayo (as in "wet" lobster rolls -- "dry" lobster rolls have melted butter poured over lobster meat in the roll).

Not "Coney Island" hot dog rolls, either, but the kind indigenous to New England and "grilled" in a frying pan like grilled cheese.

We're having one each tonight for supper after I make the rhubarb bars which, believe it or not, I'm making right now...

Later,

Getting on fine w/o side thingy. Suited me when I needed it years ago, obviously doesn't now. Feel much more relaxed, much happier. Won't bother with one on next chair. Always used music to deal with pain/anxiety before. Will carry on with that of course.

The dr. said the problems I've been having are real & to do with cp. I always suspected that but it was nice to hear it from someone w/o it who had no real idea what it was/is. If I had £1 for every time I'd been told it was in my head i'd be able to pay for 24hr care w/o any need to live here, a.

Woke up this morning (ba doom, ba doom) after starting on said tablets – where was the pain that seems to have a separate existence from its owner??
Where was the crying cos I was absolutely gagging for the loo what felt like every 5 secs, etc.

Pain done gone!

This has never happened before.

You can never have too many notebooks. I love them. Always get paperblanks/journals as gifts whether I need them or not.

(Speaking of health-related equipment, we haven't heard from Susan and her backdoor ramp lately - I imagine she's racing up and down it by now, since it isn't covered with ice or snow!)

I'm waiting to hear about some job reshuffling at work - the announcement should come soon, perhaps late next week. And with it should come an improvement in pay. I have projects lined up (after the credit card is paid off) and the first big one is fixing the floor in the den so I can put my furniture anywhere in the house I goddamn want to without reference to an idiotic 6" step that was so trendy in the 1970s (the sunken den look - resulting in more stubbed toes and accidental stepping off of that edge than I can remember).

Linn, I should have done more work in the yard (I mixed up some of the foliar feeding mix and sprayed early), but I canned today. I envy you all of those big conifers and the garden furniture to set out under them. I've been working on growing some heat-tolerant pines here, and I'm thinking it's almost time to find a concrete bench for under the vitex in the front yard. I'll do a little weeding out front this evening and I have some mulch I want to spread so I don't have to look at the bag any more. I have to mow in the front again tomorrow, because I don't feel like pulling out the mower tonight.

I do the canning in small batches - 5 or 6 jars at a time, and today there are a dozen pints of diced tomatoes and six jars of zucchini bread and butter pickles cooling on my kitchen counter. As I worked I had the computer/televison set up and streamed the two episodes of Inspector Lewis that played on PBS last week. I was going to tape them but somehow ended up taping the same thing I watched [doh!]. Good thing PBS streams for a few weeks after a program. I cleaned as I worked and came up with a kitchen looking even better than when I started. And it smells SOOOOOOO good in here! I could buy organic canned tomatoes and save a lot of time, I suppose, but I enjoy the garden and the process and this is a great gift to my future self.
