Beware everywhere, mind. I have had my pocket picked, for what it's worth, in Jerusalem, Paris & Lisbon...

I have never had my pocket picked, fortunately, it helps if you look like a tramp

A friend of ours, visiting Chile, had her necklace torn from her neck in a busy weekday city street. Just a thin gold chain and tiny crucifix. Snatch and gone.

When I travelled alone all over the place, I wore a small money bag with passport, money etc UNDER my clothes, and absolutely NO jewellery, camera or phobile moan, and wore a cheap full-length cotton skirt and scruffy long cotton top. (I probably resembled you Good Soldier Schweik in female form.) I was never robbed or accosted. I suppose my very fierce teacher expression may also have helped!

So am I to take it that you are all saying that I have repeatedly suffered so because of universal acknowledgment of my unique and ever-present sartorial perfection?

How nice of you all. Much appreciated.

Saigon has a long way to go to catch up with London:

300 phones stolen every day

Recent news reports have indicated this is considered a BIG PROBLEM for tourists at the Vatican.

Being typically vague, those reports don't really indicate it's much worse than in many other places, possibly because the local law enforcers have distracted by been busy with the recent new ban on "eating in public" to control those ugly tourists who snack on hotdogs from the courtyard vendors.

LOL MtheElegant! It's probably true, because they'll obviously target someone who seems to have something worth pinching. (In the case of the Ladyboys, one wonders what else they might be inclined to 'pinch'!) Anyway, at home or abroad, I'm sure you always look the picture of pleasing perfection!

By the way, when crossing borders in Africa, I found the border posts very dodgy places. The chaps who eventually stamped my passport invariably had a good rummage through my luggage, and once I had a new bottle of rather cheap perfume nicked. But generally they were crestfallen, as I only travel with the minimum of light, cheap clothing and twenty pairs of large, stout, thick cotton...er...items of underwear. Definitely NOT worth pinching!

Rome is definitely a hotspot for pocket pinching....
