BS: Is it really worth it?

"Six men who carried out a raid on London's Selfridges department store stole watches worth an estimated £1m, police say"

These stories often baffle me. I suppose it is true that these watches would retail as £1m, but I'd be pretty surprised if they could then sell them for that. It's hardly my area of expertise, but I guess if they use a fence they will be lucky to get one tenth of that. Then it has to be split 6 ways at least, maybe more if there were others involved who were not at the shop. So it's looking like in the order of £15,000 each.

It doesn't seem very much, really, considering the risks of the raid and the consequences if they get caught ...

They probably planned it for ages so they must have thought it worth their while. But as you say, it doesn't seem an awful lot for the risks involved. Were they armed? If so, they face donkey's years inside if caught.

Did they keep the money or turn it over to a group? Theft is a recognized means of funding Various Ugly Things.

Thieves are not generally known for their IQs.

Unless they're elected, in which case we know they're the cream of the crop.

A lot of criminals dont seem to care - A long time ago I recall a report that an Iron Railway bridge was scheduled for demolition - Three guys turned up with a truck , worked solidly for three days and drove off with the iron in the truck . THEN the REAL team arriverd . local police inspector reckoned they had just about made the average wage between them !

kendall, they may not have high IQs in the accepted sense, but a lot of them are very, very savvy and cunning. (I mean thieves, not politicians! Although, wait a minute...er...)

A local candidate for the Darwin award attempted to rob a small store, but made a slight tactical error.

His attempt was unsuccessful as he got nothing from the store, but he left behind his "gimme the money" note that he'd written on the back of one of his own checking account deposit slips - with complete name, address, and account number on the other side.

It's reported that he's "in custody."

The same thing happened in England, John. In that case, a bank hold-up was fairly successful, but the robber left behind his note, which was written on his wage-slip.
The police arrived at his home before he did.

Some people don't have a lot of paper in their lives.

One of the inmates I visited once broke into a furniture shop (no idea why) He was in a drugged state, so when he found nothing worth stealing he lay down and fell asleep, Early next morning a crowd had gathered outside the shop and soon the Police arrived. He was fast asleep on a display bed in the shop window!

No Darwin award if you don't die...

My twins put more effort into avoiding work than into working. I keep telling them to get their priorities right!

"Is it really worth it?"

(the question I ask myself before bothering to post to any Mudcat political or religious thread)

Usually, the answer is "no". ;-D Heh!

"No Darwin award if you don't die."

I've read of them being awarded to men who have castrated. Rightly so, I think.

Castrated themselves.

By accident, I presume? Shane almost did that one time at the sawmill.
