Mudcat Auction - CD's

10 Jun 13 - 11:10 AM (#3524811)
Subject: Mudcat Auction - CD's
From: Allan C.

Now available for bid is a collection of CD's by or featuring Mudcatters. All proceeds will go to support The Mudcat. This collection contains CD's by a variety of Mudcatters, including Rick Fielding, Sandy & Caroline, Judy Cook, Alice Flynn, Skarpi, and many, many others. Some are home produced and others may be available commercially. A number of them are "field recordings" of Mudcat gatherings of one sort or another. These are all offered only as a total package; not by piece. Shipping within the continental US is included.

I suppose I should have mentioned that there are nearly 40 CD's in this offering.

Non-members cannot submit bids. Join us. There are no strings and no hidden fees or spams or any other unexpected trash. What you'll find is a fine, international community of mostly wonderful people who are genuinely interested in folk music and culture.

Am I really going to walk away with this for $20????? Most of those CDs sell for $15 apiece.

More recordings that are among the collection include an open mike recording of Rick Fielding and one of Jeri. Another was recorded in Sorcha's backyard gathering, featuring many tunes played by Bill Sables, a few fiddle tunes by Sorcha, herself, and a song or two by yours, truly. C'mon, folks! One hundred percent of the proceeds go to The Mudcat!!

Extend the auction. Many people will have very little cash until month's end.

True. I've also sent a note to Max to discover if there is a way to extend the final date of the auction. Nothing of that sort is readily apparent so far as I can see.

Well... the date is the date because it's a date. Just wait. Nobody shows their hand beforehand. >;-)

Also a good point. Please know also that a bid is a bid. If it is a winning bid, eventual payment is expected; but is not demanded upon the very day of the end of the auction. Arrangements can be made, I am sure. Please know, however, the CD's will be shipped as soon as is possible after complete payment is made.

I would assume the winning bidder pays shipping if it is not specified in the auction. Walmart doesn't pay shipping on Pringles. Otherwise, I would never have to leave the house. >;-)

As to shipping, read the first post. Last line.

OK, I extended the auction by a little bit, since that seems to be the consensus. Ending date is June 25 - I hope that's OK with everybody.
I've found that auctions are best at about three weeks, no longer.

Thanks, Joe!

Since the proceeds go to the Mudcat there's nothing to prevent me from bidding against you guys! Current bid is at $53!

BTW, the current actual count is 47 CD's. I just added a few that include a recording of a gathering held in Montana. That recording includes a number of tunes featuring Bill Sables, Les B, Alice (in Montana) Flynn, Wayne Skertich, (our host,) and myself. This gathering was one of many that Bill and I were so fortunate to have attended during our Adventure.

The farther west we went, the more difficulty Bill had with his banjo. If memory serves, it had friction pegs rather than geared tuners. The dry, hot air caused the wood to keep shrinking away from the pegs, making tuning more problematic than usual. At least partly because of this, he switched to the melodeon as well as to his then brand new mandola.

Les filled in nicely with his more bluegrass style of banjo picking and boom-chucking.

Despite a terrible cold, Alice sang quite well. She even duetted with me on a song.

Wayne, a non-Catter, but an accomplished musician, can be heard on the bass. He threw in an occasional slap that was rather loud.

There was some nice fiddle playing in one or two of the cuts. I believe that was done by Wayne's daughter.

Rick Fielding made an appearance at a Getaway a few years ago. His open mike performance is among the recordings as is a portion of a workshop given by Caroline and Sandy. There are many more hidden treasures among these CD's.

Allan - I'd be happy to donate my CD "The Man With The Tenor Guitar" to the collection, if you would like that. I'll even pay the postage to the winning bidder - seeing as it's Mudcat.

At the risk of a little shameless self-promotion, you can hear a track from it - "The New Century Hornpipe" - on the home page of my website:

Will Fly, I think that is a great idea - especially if it stimulates the bid. As to SG's remark above, yes, I am unlikely to attempt to boost the bid anymore. I would; but my meager budget will not allow me the luxury of a higher bid.

well, we're in the final stretch... though I'm not sure what the final time is for the US east coast.

Okay, I've added to the collection to make it an even 48 CD's. The latest addition is Burt's "Plastic Flower Seeds" CD. The songs therein confirm Burt's wonderful sense of humor. But there are one or two very touching songs in there as well.

See! I told you there were some hidden treasures in this collection!!

My back is sore... I fell asleep in my chair around midnight ADST. Woke at 00:36 MCT (01:36 ADST) with a window open for one last bid...... shut down the PC and then me.

$4.69 per CD! Congrats sg!

Thanks, Allan C. That is one heckuva prize.

26 Jun 13 - 06:52 AM (#3530497)
Subject: RE: Mudcat Auction - CD's
From: Allan C.

Trust me, gnu, at least a couple of the CD's are barely worth that much. One, for instance, contains nearly 5 minutes of Sorcha attempting to tune her fiddle! However, there are some almost priceless sound bytes in some of the other "field recordings".

I must admit that I was completely unsure as to how the value of these CD's might be perceived. I'm gratified that there were at least some here who recognized the potential for treasure.

Moreover, I am pleased that the auction has raised a few needed dollars for The Mudcat. For that reason and for that reason alone, I wish it had gleaned more.

Congratulations, sg! I'll see you at CAMSCO where we can discuss your gender change.

LOL.... my kid brother was two grades behind me in school & loved to tell about the time his teacher recognized the family name & said "Didn't I have your brother a few years ago?"

I got back by referring to him as my "little" brother... though he stood almost 6 foot 2 to my puny 5 foot 5. Don't ask me to convert to metric, way too early for me.
