Thought for the Day (Nov 8)

Subject: Thought for the Day (Nov 8)
From: Peter T.

From Thoreau's Journal (Sept 12, 1853):

It occurred to me when I awoke this morning feeling regret for intemperance of the day before in eating fruit, which had dulled my sensibilities, that man was to be treated as a musical instrument, and if any viol was to be made of sound timber and kept well tuned always, it was he, so that when the bow of events is drawn across him, he may vibrate and resound in perfect harmony. A sensitive soul will be continually trying its strings to see if they are in tune. A man's body must be rasped down exactly to a shaving. It is of far more importance than the wood of a Cremona violin.

too much fruit had "dulled his sensibilities" -- my, what a novel way of putting it

I wonder what his main diet consisted of, if fruit brought on shame and regret.

Sounds like maybe he was hypoglycemic and went into a bit of an insulin coma.... Anyway it is a fine quote.

I'm sorry but as a thought for the day, that just grapes on my nerves. You'll have to orange for something better than that, it was quite appleing, I need cherrying up now.

And if anyone can get cantaloupe in there, I'll send them chocolate!!!

And yet so much of our great music has been created by people who abused their bodies with booze and dope and sleeplessness and whatever else was at hand,,,

Good point Seed......I dunno' what the hell it is, but I like the way you say it! I suppose that it is true of a lot of things and I do see that fruit may mess you up. I mean, seeing we have a Jimmy Buffet thread going, I'm reminded of "Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw"......like the song isn't "Why don't We Eat An Orange and Screw" is it?

So I guess I do see what you mean.........

Ah, Peter.....(sigh) the fruit mention totally eclipsed the deep thought, huh? Just never know how this fickle lot are gonna take something we think is so profound!**BG**

sorry if I sidetracked the thought; but having indulged in too much fruit a time or two, I found "dulled my sensibilities" an interesting description of the normal result.

OK Frankie, IOU chocolate. Thank heavens I didn't ask for Persimmons or Ugly fruit...

And Peter, the thought was beautiful, however, I had a job interview with the IRS (Inland Revenue to us Brits)yesterday, and was a bit more cynical than I needed to be. Deepest apologies. If you need any help with the rasping down.....

Hey Squeak.......So its a nice apology, but Peter is a tough guy and has long suffered my remarks about his thoughts, which are certainly inspired and beautifullly written.......but that don't put no earmuffs on the Waylon Heron!

I'm oblivious to any profundity in the quote, even though it appears some effort may have been made toward it. I was thinking mostly that Henry T. was just waxing poetic about his getting a bad case of the farts from eating too much fruit.

Ah, devil quotes scripture for his own purpose, Peter, and did you know there are at least 5 cases of constipation in the good book?

Balaam couldn't shift his ass, Moses took the tablets, Solomon sat for 40 years, Sampson brought the house down and Adam lay abounden.....

Should have eaten the figs instead of wearing them.....

I think she should offer the 3 Rum/3 kinds of chocolate Mousse recipe to the cookbook
